I'm going to start the 510 project soon. But I'm still debating if what route should I take. I read some stuff in here but Up to date opinions will be better.
I'm gonna start to build the motor first. I'm debating if I should go for an SR or a 13b. The plan was to get an sr20de and then probably go turbo later. But I had the chance to drive a rotary powered car a few days a go and now I just can't take it off my mind. :dead:
I really need some advice. Thanks in advance.
Oh and it's going in a datsun 510.

coming from a guy who has owned 2 rotary engines (12a and 13b) plus an sr20det id say definately go the sr route. if your planning on a turbo in the long run then just do it right the first time. there are differences between the de and det models so go with the det right off the bat. it will save you money in the long run. rotary motors are a pain in the ass. not to mention they seem not to hold up to abuse all that well and once they are blown up it is a pain in the ass to rebuild and very expensive as well. sr20det all the way my friend.

rotary isnt bad. just like with ANY motor you just have to know what you're doing or else it'll go to shit.

perhaps a little more info would smooth things out.
what are your intentions with this 510?

i've always liked the small compact size of the rotary engines, but they are just too notorious for problems.

The sr20de/sr20de+T plan: I was planning on getting a DE then pretty much upgrade internals etc. Then probably upgraded turbo . OR should I just get an sr20DET if I'm gonna have problems later on for doing an sr20DE+T route.
And for the 13b I'm still researching on this one....ahahah.

Ohh I see. Because I'd rather spend the money on upgraded internals and turbo than to get a DET, is this route advisable?

are you talking about taking a de and making it a det?

How deep are your pockets? I've contemplated the rotary route, 20B in my S30, but I know the overall cost would be a tooooooooooon, now matter how cheap I can get the engine here.
If I was to consider a piston engine, it'd be an inline 6 of some form, but Z's have massive engine bay's.
Don't let all the rotary naysayers steer you clear, just do your research on what makes them go pop, and don't do it. I guarantee all these people whining about apex seals either didn't have proper cooling, tuning, or protecting form boost creep.
I have 117k kilometers on my FD, still original engine. They just need a lot more protection and fine tuning than any other engines. A nice light rotary powered 510 would be pretty damned cool, albeit a lot more expensive than a simple swap in SR set up. Remember you'll probably have to all custom engine mounts, transmission mounts, driveshaft and etc. I can't think of any companies making mounting kits for 13B's.

If you decide sr I would def go det off the bat. Especially for fitment. And you would have to redo your exhaust and everything on the exhaust side. I love the 510s. Good luck on what ever you decide.

Yes sir. Well it'll be done right in my own garage so custom work wouldn't be a hassle. And budget wise I'm not trying to go more than 10k on motor and suspension. Car is mainly for auto X and might be used for a little drifting.

If your going to go turbo later I say just get a KA it's cheaper and has more potential

both great engines but the rotary may be a steep learning curve if your not already familiar with them.

Iv'e heard the 13b is'nt very reliable, but do'nt know any truth to that. I know a guy that has gone through 5 13b's in his FC and now has a very reliable CA18T in it. I plan on installing a 2000ish SR into my 71 510 with a 6 speed, but I was told the 6 speeds have some problems.

The more you mod a rotary, especially porting, the more you need to be on top of your game as far as cooling and tuning.

I hate when ignorant people post up misinformation like this. rotary engines are a pain in the ass to rebuild? are you kidding me? you've obviously never taken one apart. there's a lot less work than a traditional engine. also, properly built, tuned, and maintained rotary engines take plenty of abuse just fine. just because your dumb ass blew up a couple, doesn't mean they suck. maybe you just suck
