I got a 91 300zx and been wanting to Install dual tips instead of the stock quads, instead of buying the whole exhaust system can I just cut off the stock muffler, get a new muffler with a single outlet, weld it , then put an exhaust tip? Also what size do you recommend I get the exhaust tip cause I've been told that on a NA going to big can actually make it lose power,

You can do that without issue. If you don't want to change your exhaust keep the size the same or a little bigger on the muffler inlet.

Theres a few ways to go about this, you can have a shop hack the tips off and just weld on a 3 inch round tip or something. If you do that you wont see a change in horsepower or sound.
If you have them cut off the muffalers and just extent the pipes and add the same tips, it will be loud as balls and you still probly wont see any horsepower increse and it will probly sound ricy and nasty and get you tickets
Before i go any farther, go take off your lambo doors and get your dignity back.
Next you can have a exhast shop make you a catback with a slightley bigger pipe size, i would stay around 2.5 inches. you will also need two new muffalers with bigger inlets. With this setup it will sound as good as the mufflers you get will allow it, but z's sound good anyway so you should be safe.
Or you can have them make you a whole header back system, this is still cheaper than buying a premade type system but it varys on the qualty of work at the shop.
Reguardless of wich you choose, dont go straight pipe, it will loose power and sound like shit.
But if you have a z and your 16, convince your parents to buy you a catback system, bolt it on yourself.. bam, more power and good sound.
Just dont do any lame ricy bullshit to it for the love of god, like lambo doors.

Yeah that what I was planning on doing, cutting off from the muffler and getting one with a single inlet cause I don't want the quad tips, but I can't convince them to get me the whole system it's alot! I was lucky getting this car for the price I got it for! I know th doors are a little to much but it already came like that, and tellme you wouldn't refuse to take a 300zx that has the engine stillened, Nissan aftermarket original calipers, only 140k miles, interior looks brand new, shirtshifter, new pearl paint,it has dual short ram k&n intakes, and many more just for the price of 2,200? All those parts probable cost more for what I payed for the car. I had to take it it was once in a life time! The only thing that was wrong with it is that it's a salvage title but fuck it had no problem insuring it an paying jut a much as my bros supra so I think I got a good deal. Back to the exhaust what kind of muffler can I get tho? Cause I see many that have the inlet toward the left, some are right down the middle, or some are just circular in stead of squared? Does it make a difference?

If you're willing to do the welding, you can weld up anything that'll physically fit under there...
Just got think and plan ... check out http://zilvia.net/f/tech-talk/171389-fabrication-thread.html

Take it to a muffler shop. Get a quote on how much it would cost for them to weld on new mufflers with single tips. Also find out how much it would cost if you brought them mufflers to be welded on, then you can shop around for whatever type of universal muffler you want and take it to them.

Doesn't California hate any exhaust or emissions modifications? You wouldn't really gain power if you just changed the mufflers, but being 16, I remember that's all I could afford, and that's all I wanted also lol :).
Do what he said ^axio

My father had an N/A 300zx that had universal mufflers welded onto stock piping. It actually sounded really good for how cheap of an option it was.
On a sidenote, its hilarious how expensive aftermarket parts are for a Z32. Catbacks start at like $1000.

Yeah you CAN get poped in CA for exhuast, but so long as you drive normal and safe and dont draw attention to yourself you should be fine..

Not necessarily, there are reputable options out there in the $700-800 range. GReddy, HKS, Specialty Z to name a few. Once you start getting into the downpipes, midsections and test pipes is when it starts to get expensive.
