I parked my car for about a month because i needed a maf, o2 sensor, and a few other parts and the other day i pulled it into the garage to put on the parts i just got and noticed it was leaking coolant from under the belt covers. So i took the top cover off to look for the place it was leaking and noticed that there were metal shavings all over from my cas grinding down on of the bolts behind it (one is alot worse than the other 3).
I have searched and the only thing similar i have found was on another site and the guy didnt even have the cover or spacers, but as far as i know the spacers and everything are there so i dont know what my problem is. ill post some pictures of it but i am somewhat new to rbs and have no idea what would cause this and how i can fix it?
Thanks in advance to everyones help

I've seen this before... but I cannot remember exactly what we did to fix it.

I seem to recall, Maybe we added some washers (under the cas) to keep the CAS away from the cam bolts? If you spaced the CAS away from the valve cover with some washers, does that seem like it might be a fix? because like I said I've seen this before, I just cant remember what we did. It was simple though.

Yea that makes sense. Thanks for the help. I'll let you know if that fixes it

Alright i got washers and put it back on with it lined up directly where it was before (when it ran) and now it wont start. It back fires and sounds like its out of time. Any ideas? does the spline on the cas need to be aligned with something? If that spline was turned while it was off is that my issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

also I have a AFC NEO on it as well. Could that be my issue? It ran before with it hooked up tho so i dont think that would be it

There has to be a mating mark on the CAS, otherwise the engine wouldn't know where TDC is to fire correctly. Look at the FSM for the correct procedure to installing the CAS.

the cas will only go in one way if it isnt alined it wont seat all the way if u align it by eye it can still be off time if u remove it u need to retime the car rb's are very sencitive to timing.

Ok thanks. Sorry if this is a stupid question but how can I retime it? I have been reading a lot but I am still unsure

That's what I figured but the problem is i can't even get it to start now to use a timing light

It just cranks and cranks and never fires. Also it smells like fuel like its getting flooded

Sounds like the CAS is 180* off, you might want to download the R33 service manual and follow the instructions for installing the CAS. Or you can try setting the engine to piston #1 TDC and guessing which way the CAS goes a couple times.

I have downloaded the fsm and tried following it but it is confusing to me. I have tried turning it 180 and it still won't fire. I have checked my cas to make sure it is good, and it is. I have no idea what to do now

sounds like u fauled the plugs try putting new plugs in and try that also u can take out the #1 coil pack and put a short spark plug wire between the coil pack and plug so u can put the timing light on the wire this will insure a better reading and u wound have to deal with coil dwell time.

Impossible, the RB CAS can Only go in One way.

So then what do you think the problem is?

Check ECU for Codes

If he some how bolted the CAS down with out the Key ways aligned then he probably bent the Disk inside

He mentioned the smell of fuel which makes me think the CAS is good, since the injectors would need to be firing.
I bet the plugs are also trying to fire... if he changed the plugs to some brand new (dry) and tried again without any fuel in the cylinders it might start. If the CAS goes in one way, then the timing should be right first try, plus or minus. It might be retarded a bit, but he could twist the CAS to advanced without knowing the exact number to get it to start then time with a light.

WTF, so many misleading answers in this thread.

1) Your CAS is grinding on the cam bolts because you weren't running an upper timing cover. In order to fix that, you need to either reinstall the upper timing cover or add washers between the CAS bracket and the back of the CAS.

2) If you look at the end of the cam, there is a half-moon. If you look at the end of the CAS, there is the other half-moon. Make sure these are lined up 180 degrees apart. If you broke one of them off, you're going to have to guess at where the CAS lines up and hopefully it doesn't detonate itself apart in the process...or replace the exhaust cam.

I never ran it without the timing cover. im wondering if the guy before me did tho.
also you are correct, the half moon was broke in my cas. replaced the cam and problem fixed.
Thanks for the help.
Now if i can just figure out this damn afc neo. I know alot of ppl say not to use them but i cannot afford a standalone system and need something to tune it so the z32 maf will work with the rb
