Why do some sellers add their name next to the item theyre selling? I saw a thread here where they asked him to put his name in the picture to prove its not stolen, whats the point,if its stolen its stolen and nobody would know right? or is there another reason for it?

Basically so you cant use the pic off my thread to sell your nardi wheel for example, or to validate that those items are yours, and pictures are recent!

that you own it and it's in your possession before somebody sends you money from across the country

I got banned from my.is regarding this.
Putting a name and date next to a product doesn't mean shit.
The seller may very well own the product he is selling, or at the least have it in his possession.
How will that cut down on scamming? They still might refuse to send out the product, or ship you something that isn't what you purchased.
That doesn't stop shit

^^ I hear what you're saying but it also cuts down on people stealing pictures and using them as their own.

I believe its more of a way to prevent scammers from popping up on forums and selling hott items that they don't own but steal pictures online and that people would blindly pay for without even thinking twice.

I caught a guy on here doing that. He was just getting an image of S14 tail lights from google and trying to sell them.
I called him out on it and posted in all his threads that he was a scammer, even when he had 2+ screen names made.
Point is, he couldn't take another photo of the tail lights with his name next to them even at the request of a potential buyer.
