Just want to give information on a situtation that happend and hopefully it will help some people out who think they have Rod knock, piston slap, dick slapped ETC. BBBBBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

Anyways, recently installed a KA into a s14, turned on engine without exhaust at first to make sure it turned over, everything sounded fine, hooked up exhaust, turned over engine, was knocking loud , like normal engine knock, piston slap, was hoping it was just noise from head, but as you get closer you could tell it was coming from the bottom, first thought is.....I got fucked over on this engine.made sure chain wasnt hitting the valve cover so checked chain, inside of valve cover for wear and tear from chain marks.previous owner had already removed top chain guide. checked compression again and everything was good, but it still sounded exactly like the rod or piston was slapping around inside.so after checking all the head stuff, jacked up the car on jack stands and checked underneath, sounded like it was coming from underneath the oil pan, therefore, again knocking, went on over to the passenger side underneath and it sounded like it was coming from the Tranny. The tranny was missing the 2 brackets underneath the tranny that bolt on to the engine(left and right). so i just added bolts to close up the tranny cover/gasket so it wouldnt be open from underneath.so anyways after remembering that I added bolts to close up the gasket, I decided to remove the bolts and bent the cover/gasket away from the tranny and then turned on the car, noise was gone, not sure why, im guessing the gasket was bent out of shape,so when it was tightened back on it would rub against the flywheel causing knocking like noises.the gasket has a stock indent/grove that goes behind/slightly underneath the flywheel, guessing that was bent more than usual hitting the flywheel on and off.

Thats the story of how I thought I had Cock Knock, I mean Rod Knock.
Hope it helps someone someday

You should install those brackets. I drove without them, which caused my transmission to sag, and I ended up having buy a new clutch and flywheel.

He's talking about the tranny gussets. To the OP: It sounds like your driving around without these, thats a bad idea. These stop the trans from sagging and wearing things out like your bearings. Its like driving around missing a lugnut.

I had ONE of those installed in my heap.

Is it that much to ask that people dont half ass the dogshit out of their cars?

That's like running 3 flywheel bolts or half your headbolts then arguing it saves weight. OMFG PRECIOUS GRAMS!!!!!!!!

I feel your pain. Hopefully this thread DOES help someone someday. Check your brackets/bolts people!

Since we know KA's have them, and I know RB's do, then SR's must have them as well.

Yea I guess the person I bought this off was trying to save weight, no wonder it had a new clutch when i removed the tranny, full life on disc,no burnt marks on flywheel or pressure plate, thats probably why they bought a new clutch setup for it.

Hmmmm, I've never seen those before. Certainly not on my S14 Sr at least. It seems at least on my S13 that the trans is pretty well supported between the crossmember and the 10 bolts that hold it to the engine. Also considering that the modulus of elasticity of aluminum is about 1/3 that of steel, I really don't see it going anywhere. Where on the transmission do these mount? Do you guys really believe that your transmission is physically sagging without these?
