View Full Version : does anyone do rear tubs?

Just wondering, all my racing history involves muscle cars, which were very simple to install tubs on, only thing needed was to trim trunk pan and package tray. I looked at my 240 and noticed that there is a shock tower right next to the stock wheelhouse. how does one go about throwing fat tires under these cars? is widebody the only option? Because I don't like adding glass to a car, rather do steel.

yeah there are people that do them. there's a guy on here that has a turbo ls1 with a ford 9" rear if i'm not mistaken.

you could do a cantilever push\pull-rod rear shock setup on the car to get the shocks out of the way for more wheel/tire space.

I second the post above. Only viable way to get more meat UNDER the car without major modification. There is a setup called "the track cat", I wouldn't use that one. But it's a good point to start fabrication.

Rear tub is mostly for drag cars running huge ass slicks. Most people here are drifters running skinny ass stretched tires.

Idk about you but I run atleast 255/40/17 in the rear and 245/40/17 up front. Sometimes run 275 if needed

Why tub rear fenders? That's what overfenders are for

Some people don't want a wider car that looks less factory (ala overfenders or widebody kit). I prefer a big tire under the car myself.

Yeah, even without overs I squeezed a 285 on mine on a 11" wheel. And that's even an S13... an S14 would be easier. I had to notch the lower control arm and hammer the crap out of the upper, inner wheel housing though.

saxy ^ ^
i run 275 with 10.5 rim out back with 50 mm overs with all stock arms in the rear.

It's all about the right offsets and camber combination. People have squeezed good amounts of tire underneath of them with rolling and pulling the rear fender. Keep in mind these cars were designed to run 205 width tires from the factory, so there is a limit.
there are no limits.

There is always a limit... Although reaching it may or may not be attainable...

Anyone have a really informative thread about overfenders off the top of their head? I know you rivet them on and cut the quarter at the lip to hammer it up to grab more room but I was taught by an old school body man. the guys motto was filler is for making straight metal perfect, not for filling dents or holes. do you guys simply mud over the rivets? How do you go about getting it to set flush? How are the fitment on these pieces? lots of questions, glad i have a good community to ask. driftings fun, but here in nebraska the closest thing we have to motorsports is a drag strip here and there and I wanted to show up the "Dat dere chebrolet vee 8 wid dem dual quad 4 barrel carbonators is fast, them communist japonese people can't make no car. Love enlightening people. showed them the titan supra and the like and they were swearing up and down that those were 1/8th times and KM/H readings.

No one molds on over fenders unless there a show queen. Why would you mold on over's if your sliding? What u gunna do if u slide into a wall then have the replace said fender?
i slide my car all the time.. mine is all molded.. 20mm in front 50mm in the rear.. U fuck with the bull you get the horn.. risk everyone takes.. some people hate it some like it
like i said some people love it some dont.. heres a few pictures just so u get an idea

Yes that's me. Its not quite a 9" but a Ford 8.8, very close.
There are alot of other ways, like the ones mentioned, for getting getting a wider tire on the rear than having to resort to tubs. My car has them because its mainly used as a drag car. 15x10" with a 325/50 Mickey Thompson. I have more than enough room to fit the monstrous 390 Hoosier tire but thats a 30" tall tire compared to these 28" tall tires. I am getting 17's for it once they get manufactured. It'll be 17x10 in the rear with a nice 295/45-17 Mickey Thompson tire.

Very very nice fab work. I personally like a clean car, so i guess molded overs is the way to go. boms, thats a nice overfender job.
lots of hours and months of recovering from sore hands.. with the gp kit everything is easy to get to .. wiring/intercooler. front fenders are braced as well as the bumper.
its a love/hate thing for most.. i drive my car. i drift my car, i do large burnouts,i do donuts and so on.. like i said before you mess with the bull you get the horn,

A backhalf takes alot of work. You guys also have to understand, once you do it there's no turning back. You'll lose the backseat along with some driveability. I could always set the car up for drift if i wanted but it would put ALOT of stress on the panhard bar. If I were to set it up for drift it would get a triangulated wishbone.

fuck thats insane!
couldnt you just weld in some stock pick-up points from like a solid axle S12 and build a 4-link around that with a Mk1 Supra or Hilux diff?
im thinking of doing this to get rid of the absolutely terrible thing that it semi-trailing arms in an S12 i will be picking up and want solid axle over an S13 rear subframe for its simplicity.

I love your car. How bad is the ride and handling when you go to a straight axle like this? I know I hated my bros 99 Mustang, the way it rode was awful, is this really rough? Is this a terrible idea for a street car? I can just see my white coupe tubbed out in the back and it would be so killer...

Not as bad as you think, that's why people do these swaps. A beefy solid axle built right will take anything you can throw at it. With this rear I'm good for 8's. I know many mustang owners that have run 7's with a properly built Ford 8.8.

Like I said, you will sacrifice some driveability. Mine is not too bad, but i wouldn't think about throwing it sideways until I got a better panhard bar. It's what keeps the rear stable horizontally. It really depends on how its setup. I have seen people do just a minitub with ladder bars and have it turn out great. I have also seen triangulated 4links that work great as well. I'll try to find some photos.

a 4 link is the way to go for drag racing as mentioned earlier. but fitting a decent tire under the factory fender isn't hard either...
We do back halfs as well... a Mustang that we had here at the shop modifying the roll cage in the pic..
