So i've been searching around and it seems like EVERYONE has a different way to time an sr20det and to set the idle as well.
Is there ONE PROPER way to do it? I followed some of the timing tutorials and couldn't get the car to idle where I wanted it nor was I sure it was timed correctly as it ran like crap.

use the factory service manual it outlines the proper procedures

did you use a timing light to check the timing?

the BEST way is nissan datascan and a consult cable. Lock timing with datascan and set your base timing to what your reading on datascan.

lol. Thats where part of my problem comes in. THATS the ideal way, but I have an s13sr in an s14 car with no scan port now. I cant even check my ECU codes because i have a blacktop ecu (no bulb in ecu for codes) and dont have an access port for datascan. I'm starting to wonder if I can wire one up.

You still have a consult port, it is in your fuse box. If you did your wiring correct it will work too. One can always be wired up to the ecu too.

Ditto! I make it standard on all my wiring jobs, along with check engine light.

what kinda timing light did u use? one around coil trigger wires? or did u take the coil loose and put a short wire fron the coil to plug and use a Inductive light on the wire( best way) this will be more accurate because no coil dwell time involved.
