I'm not familiar with HID kits and where to get them, so I was wondering where the best place to get an HID kit for my '98 240sx? I'm thinking of running 8k. Do I just need the HID kit or will I need more components?

try sonic motor. I've bought 2 sets, my brother and his friend also bought one and we haven't had any problems. cheap too

+1 for DDM Tuning. The 5000k Raptor kit is what I had in my last car. 35 bucks with a lifetime warranty, can't beat that. 2 years with no issues before I sold it.

I've heard good things about DDM Tuning also, getting ready to order some from them.

Before, I'd just get the xentec ones from ebay. Never had a problem with them, and they're cheap.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll check out both Sonic Motor and DDM Tuning.

Does the kit include everything needed? I've seen some 6k and 8k lights around, but not too many. I was wondering if 8k is too.... blue?? I just want to be able to see clearer.

+1 on the XENTEC hid kits from eBay, I've had a set of xentec hid in my eagle talon since 2005 sold the car last winter so i retro fitted them into my Silvia triple projectors, only thing I did was order 6000k bulbs cause I was tired of the 10,000k blue bulbs, these were like $175.00 in 2005 now they are $36 shipped, lol also have had a xentec hid kit in my 08 scion tC since 2007 (before you talk shit, cars of the new year come six months before the new year) and they still work.

Who cares about warranty, the hid kit is $36 shipped and if a bulb goes out, new replacement bulbs are $13 for a pair, still cheaper than buying a decent pair of regular halogen bulbs

Oh to answer your last question, yes, when you buy an hid kit it comes with everything you need, they are plug and play, just make sure you order the right bulb type, I would recommend 6000k they are white with somewhat is a blue hue can't really notice it, if you want the blue hue get the 8000k just the right amount of blue and cops won't mess with you

Sorry to revive an old thread but I searched an this is what I found. I am going to purchase a set of ddm tuning hid kits. I have read and read and it seems most people have problems with the slim ballast at 55w. I was wondering what do I need for the install, I plan to go 35w regular raptor ballast H1 bulb....is this all I would need. Do I need any additional parts....wires etc.?

I have a 95' s14....thanks guys

You might not want HID bulbs in that particular headlight housing. They were never intended for HID bulbs, it may give you a poor light dispersion pattern, with a "hot spot" that may blind other drivers or get you pulled over by the police.

theretrofitsource.com (http://theretrofitsource.com) is a good source for projectors and other retrofitting supplies. Great customer service too. If you're serious about an HID setup I'd recommend a set of FX-r projectors or acura TL projectors if you've got the cash with OSRAM bulbs and either matsushita or morimoto ballasts. If you're on an economy setup, the morimoto bulbs are a good deal. S13 or S14 headlights aren't large enough to house something like an ls460 projector or something else crazy like a q45, otherwise I'd definitely recommend the ls460. Cracking a headlight open for the first time to mount the projectors is an adventure, but that's half the fun of modding stuff. Also TRS will sell you pre-made wiring harnesses for your hid setup that are pretty good quality. They use the factory headlight wiring to trigger a relay that send power directly from the battery to the ballasts to provide the surge of current when the ballasts strike an arc in the hid bulb. This is much cleaner electrically than relying on the factory wiring to deliver the 8 to 10 amp surge needed to fire up an hid bulb.

I've got a set installed in my truck and I can easily light up a 6 lane wide interstate with only 35w ballasts and osram cbi bulbs. Perfect cutoff too, so no glare for oncoming traffic. Just mounting hid bulbs in oem halogen reflector type headlights is asking for trouble. The glare is pretty horrendous if you're facing it and you're wasting a bunch of light that's just getting cast off into the night instead of directed down onto the road at a distance and out to either side where it's actually useful. Most people resort to 55w ballasts to "help," but now the glare problem is even worse and you're probably hindering your eye's ability to see into the distance. Lots of light on the road right infront of your car is bad for your eye's sensitivity to seeing at night, you want the light directed out instead of down.

As for color temperature, 4300k will be brightest in raw lumens but I'm not a fan of the yellowish hue. 5000k is crystal white and 6000k has a hint of blue. 8000k is about as high as I would go because as the color temperature shifts upwards, the lumens drop off. Ever see those cars with purple (30000k) bulbs? Even with hid technology those bulbs make less lumens than the halogen bulbs they replaced and it's borderline unsafe, but to each his own. One thing to watch out for is bulbs will colorshift, I know phillips bulbs are known to start out yellow-white (4600k ish) and colorshift to just above 5000k with burn-in. This is only noticeable when one burns out and you only replace one bulb and now your hids are different colors.

This question is directed to the users of the DDM H I D units.

What size ballast are you guys running. There is 2 types, so far my research suggests that the 35w regulr ballast provides longevity. I also ready the slimline units at 55w do not last as long.

What is the experience with these different wattages and units

DDM has 3 types

35W Slim

55W Slim

35W Raptor (full size)

The raptor kits are $30 and the slim kits are $40 right now

i've used them all in different cars and have had no real issues. and i say this because one time i did have a bad balast they exchanged it for me on the spot after testing it and finding it to be defective.

for your S14 USDM headlights you need H1 for lowbeam, 9005 for high beam and H3 for fog lights. i wouldn't recommend anything more than 6K because anything past that looks like shit and will suck balls in the rain or fog.

if you have JDM headlights, i'm pretty sure they use different bulbs so you'd have to figure out what they are.

+1 for DDM = Drunken Drift Monkey? haha

Thank you, you practically answered all of my questions. I have another question though, which one of the kits had a bad ballast?

Was it the slim or regular sized raptor unit.
