Anyone know if the state of Washington fails you because of a triggered check engine light? Sorry if its a dumb question. I passed a few years ago with the ECU throwing 34 and 105 (knock and EGR) and stopped driving the car. I'm wondering if the CEL doesn't matter here or if I got lucky and the CEL didn't trigger during the test.

CEL will be automatic fail for emission test (at least in Seattle area).

If your vehicle is 1995 or older, then CEL does not matter at all.
they only do tail pipe test.
I used to work at DEQ
