Some friends of mine with fast mustangs and camaros use these although ive never asked what for. What is the purpose of a throttle body spacer? Anyone have one?

I don't know for sure, but this is what the aftermarket claims that TB spacers do...
THe purpose of the TB spacer is to ..
1.Allow a colder air charge
2.make a "swirling effect" on the intake charge thus making it come into the intake faster
I have never seen TB Spacers available on the aftermarket for the S13/S14 240sx,but from freinds cars, they work well,my dad put one on his truck and he got alot more power(its alot faster) and about 1-6 better MPG

from what i understand, the older cars (especially domestic) are usually poorly engineered. And with little weird things here and there, (like the tb spacer) it can gain massive power due to it's displacement.
How does it gain power? i havce no clue...

It pretty much just makes your intake manifold hold more volume. Because of the longer passage and some weird fluid dynamics that I can't get into, the air will accelerate a bit (depending on how much engineering went into the spacer). This works a LOT better on carburated cars than on EFI cars. I used spacers on my old 240Z and did feel a difference (due to better air-gas mix most likely), but I doubt it'd do much for a 240sx.
Edit: I totally agree with what the post below me says. Hit it right on the head!

Throttle body spacers are used to make more power on engines that use throttle body injection systems, especially the overhead type. It will produce 0 hp in a modern TPI or DFI system.

so.....basically the aftermarket who is trying to sell TB spacers for newer cars are just full of :bs: ? wow, well I took a stab at it,although not a very good one...hah hah
EDIT: okay,I admit,as a "newbie" I was just wanted to use the BS flag for something....hah hah, sorry

what about boring out the throttlebody when i install an intake? Like with a dremel tool? Any benefit?
i posted a thread similar to this one earlier but since people are reading this one..
what other nissan throttlebodies are interchangeable / beneficial to the ka24DE?

I don't think you will notice a difference. You wont be able to bore it too much more because the walls are kinda thin, and the throttle body diameter is the same size as the intake manifold. Its not really restrictive.

not only that but you'd need a new throttle plate since you'd bore a nice gap between it and the body
