View Full Version : Odd Idle After 5 Speed Swap S13

Hello,
I have just finished my 5 speed swap on my 1991 HB. The car has 163k on it, and drove/ran perfect before converting to manual. I did all of the work myself for the swap. Anyhow, the car drives perfect since converting. However, the idle tends to stay high (around 1800 RPM) when I come to a stop, and then after 2 to 7 seconds, it calms itself down to the normal 750 RPM. Once it settles down back to normal, it stays there until I apply throttle once more.
It does NOT surge up and down. When the car is started, whether the car is cold or warmed up, it idles perfectly normal.

It is important to note, that while rolling in Neutral, no matter what speed, the idle remains constant at 1700 +- RPM, and will not settle down unless the car is completely stopped - thus indicating that the vehicle speed is affecting the idle speed.

I first used the automatic ECU that was original to the car, but have since switched to a manual ECU hoping this would resolve the issue and it has not.

Remember, the idle was PERFECT one week ago, right before I performed the swap. I did every moment of the swap myself, and I did not touch anything on the motor. The closest I got to taking anything off of the motor was removing the starter, but that's it. I have not found any vacuum leaks, and nothing else has been messed with.

I have done multiple vacuum tests, and there are NO leaks.

I unplugged the automatic trans computer (found above the ECU), and it didn't help. When the car is idling high, I tried to close the throttle plate to make sure that it wasn't sticking open - and it was closed fully, even while idling high.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Sorry for the lengthy read.

i did the same mod to my 89 hatch and i have the same issue. it does not bother me, so i just left it alone. did you notice any difference with the manual ECU? mine still have the AUTO ECU.

just live with it dood. Mine is the same way. My chassis was automatic. I put in a rebuilt s14 motor/trans and used the s13 intake manifold.

I believe its because the automatic and the manual TPS are slightly different. The computer has to correctly calculate what the idle should be and that's why it takes longer to go down. That's my 0.02 tho.

Automatic ecu does that.
Auto is going through a torque converter... you dont have one. it will go high and recalculate. if you to fix it, put a manual ecu in it.... also with a auto ecu u dont have a speed limiter =]

As stated in the original post, I am now using a manual ECU and it hasn't helped at all.

No difference that I can see. I hear using the manual ECU helps for cold weather starts.

!!! I'll try that and let you guys know - great idea.

Are you 100% sure it's a manual ECU?
I've tried both auto and manual on my 240sx and it acts exactly the way you describe it. It doesn't act that way with a real manual ecu though.

Auto and manual TPS's aren't different.

I work at Advance, and there are def. different part numbers for an automatic TPS and manual TPS. I called Nissan and they confirmed that the auto and manual both use different sensors. The guy I got the manual ECU from swears its the ECU out of his car, which is a factory manual 240.

Is there any more definitive way to confirm if it is a manual ECU? I hear the numbers have no known rhyme or reason as to whether they are manual or auto originally...

Well, I just googled the part number on my "manual ECU" and it is in fact an auto. I got screwed, but the seller claims he will resolve it.

We'll see.

mine does the same thing and i have a stock 5speed
first guess is the maf, clean it ...clean it well,
if that fails just reset your idle theres a way to recalibrate your TPS try that just my .02 my car does the same thing, but im over it i realized after fuckng with many 240s if it runs dont touch it bc it will break
