View Full Version : Tuned ECU trouble

K, got my ECU from jason (Emance)
Im running a Redtop SR in an s14. Stock SR with T28, 550 topfeed RC injectors, stock MAFS, z32 fuel filter, walboro 255.
At full boost it seems to hit the 12.5 area but then wanders to 15.5 and sometimes even 16.5 (fluttering).
I'm using an innovate wideband (very accurate) that was previously used on my old setup which was super duper rich.
Thoughts and opinions? Why is it so lean?

Because tuning by mail is a terrible idea.
Last saturday I tuned two nearly identical sr's
Both had stock injectors, both had stock mafs, both had front mount intercoolers, both had 3" exhausts and downpipes. Both were running 12psi
One was all stock and the other was rebuilt with weisco pistons and eagle rods. On a dyno dynamics the one that had internals made 206.8whp and I had plenty of room to richen it up some if I wanted/needed. The one with stock internals made 201.6whp and I was having trouble getting enough fuel to it.
These cars were tuned about 2 hours apart from each other, same weather, same day, same dyno, same nistune ecu, very similar timing values but a much different fuel map.
So my point is, if these 2 very stock cars had to have so much difference in their tune, what makes so many people think they can just call a company and tell them what they have going on with their setup and order an ecu? Even if they dont have problems how could it even be close to being optomised?

Thats y I went standalone.

Its not standalone vs properly tuned ecu though. There are many people/places that sell bench tunes for standalones too. The idea is, dont do that. Have a real tuner that knows what he/she is doing tune it on a real dyno.

how much does it cost to buy a nistune that can plug in and be ready to be tuned?
is the nistune an add on to the ecu internals?

there is an early ecu that takes a type 3 board and a late that takes a type 4 board.

Update. So today. I removed the boost controller (because the boost was wandering between 15-18).
BAM, car pegs a 13.5 AFR all the way through the powerband... At 8 pounds... (though, at 8 pounds I'd expect mid11 AFR.
Tomorrow I will install a fuel pressure gauge and do some more pulls at 8 psi... To see if the fuel pressure raises with boost.
What is your synopsis after this update?
Okay, here's a good question... A stock redtop with 550 RC injectors, walbro, and a t 28 should be capable of running what Psi before it leans out?

You shouldnt be capable of maxing those injectors with that turbo.
Anyways im still going to stand with: you have a bench tune on your ecu. Period. Results are not what was desired and without a capable compitent tuner hooked up to your ecu being able to see whats going on inside your just going to have to adjust everything you can and throw parts at it until it starts working right.
Try cleaning your maf though, a dirty maf has trouble reading airflow.

What area of the maf do you suggest cleaning? The hangy rod Thingy?
It's a stock SR maf btw, am I pegging it?

Just curious how much boost are you running. Stock MAF is most likely maxxed out.

Was running 16... Now down to 8

You should try having your ROM tune ECU re done for Z32 MAF. Your setup has the turbo and injectors to make 250-280whp at that boost levels. But your stock maf is your bottleneck and will lean it out since it way past what it can meter. GL!

what would happen if i jsut slapped on a z32 maf though its tunedto stock SR?

Here's some new development..... MY FPR does have a vacuum fittign on it... BUT, after finding out that its probably a MEGAN racing FPR... it does not in-fact reference boost... so that MAY be the problem.
can someone reccomend me a rising rate boost Referenced FPR that costs about 100 bucks?

Nismo fpr
Sard fpr if you want to spend about $150
I have the Sard one and love it!

also, what shoudl my idle fuel PSI be?

For one 15 - 18 psi is too much for a stock t28. Anything past 13 or 14 is not recommended. I had a tuned ecu once and my car would break up after 5000 rpm and I sent the ecu back and one of the chips they installed shit the bed. U bought a used ecu so u have nothing u can do to check to see if the ecu is bad. If u want to rule out alot then put the stock injectors in and see how the car runs on a stock ecu and then start from there.

Efispecialist sell his tunes for like 350 and has good customer service. I no alot of guys don't like chipped ecu but they don't cost much and u can make ok hp with them. Most of the time the tuner makes the tune very safe so u shouldn't run into problem.

read post number 2 and tell me how anyone could make a tune safely and mail it out without ever seeing the car?
I have tunes on my laptop for about every setup out there. If I could feel good about it hell Id sell them for $350 too. But I couldnt, Id know I was potentially blowing up someones car. There are too many variables and unknowns.
Im in it for the fun first and the money second. If I cant make an honest buck then I dont want it. Some of these other guys dont feel that way and as soon as there is a problem they will blame their customers car for not somehow being identical to the one they made the tune on.
