I'm located on camp pendleton, ca. I just finished dissassembling the block and i am looking for reputable machine shop in my area to take the head and block to so i can start my rebuild. I'm originally from montana so I don't know the "go-to" places here although I'm sure there are plenty. I detonated cylinder 4 pretty good and there is a very small scratch in the cylinder wall so i need a shop full of gearheads and not assholes looking to thin up my wallet. Looking for suggestions from people who actually had work done from the shop preferrably and have first hand knowledge of their work, but all suggestions are welcome. I'm praying the scratch can be removed without over boring as this is a budget build and simple engine bay clean up. Thanks for any help.

So i just read the rules in the regional forum and it said all things tech related belong over here, and as my question is tech related IMO, I'm not sorry anymore. lol. And as i get my parts back and begin my rebuild, this thread will become more tech related.

Let's go over your original post shall we?

Sorry but that's regional as hell. If this actually belonged in the tech forum you would be asking how to go about doing all this work yourself, and providing pictures and steps you took to get it done.

All you are doing in this thread is asking people from a certain REGION about reputable shops you can take your engine to get fixed up because you don't want to get screwed over.

When you actually get ready to build your engine and you come with legit questions that you have SEARCHED for thoroughly and have not found the answers to, then I would suggest you to make a new thread.

Thanks.

listen here "killer" which i'm sure ur not, why are you so but hurt? I'm not trying to start a e-fight with telephone tough guys. And my last response was meant as a joke. Granted i dont spend alot of time on the internet and my e-manners are abit lacking, but i'm pretty sure the lol in my last post would lead most to that it was a joke so chill and just throw out some reputable shops please. thankyou

Honestly, your best bet is google. Figured most machine shop can hone out the block to fix the scratch. You don't really need anything fancy or any specialty shop. Worst case scenario, even for SoCal prices, it still shouldn't run more than $100.

Quick Google search for shops around Oceanside...this is what's posted up from a Z28 Forum:
"you can try Machine Tech in Oceanside, Smokeys Speed Shop in Oside, Drag Masters in C'bad."

Google search those places for direction or phone number and hit them up real quick.

im from SD but i don`t know any shops up in Oceanside. the one i go to is Ed Hale in Lakeside. it`s pretty far from Camp Pendleton( about 45 minutes). but if you can`t find anyone up there that can do it for you, give them a call.but all of those shops that Flip mentioned should be able to do the job for you. the size and depth of the scratch will dictate if you need a bore or a simple hone. good luck on your build and if you are in the service, THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU GUYS DO FOR US AND OUR COUNTRY.

Flip- i googled and called the ones the came up, they either were out of bizz, or were cnc only, no automotive machining, and one shop actually told me they dont do "import 4bangers", so thankyou for the ones you mentioned, I appreciate it. I just don't want you to think i didn't search for em. I was hoping some of you guys had used 1 or 2 around here that could be vouched for.
rcdad- if these ones dont pan out or decide they hate "4 bangers' as well, i will get back to you and as far as my service goes, no problem, I'm glad to do it. I appreciate the Thanks. You'd be surprised on how many ignorant people out there still consider us mongrel baby killers or whatever.
4x4-if all else fails i'll head on out ur way. haha
Thanks guys for the help. Hope i come back with good news.

I can send you to Efrin, it's called Alis Machine, it's all the way in Long Beach, CA - Signal Hill, CA - near Cherry St. but it's the best machine shop work for the money in Socal period

Machine tech wants like 300 bucks for honing, resurfacing the deck, measuring the crank for bearing sizes and cleaning the block.
Smokey's doesn't have the bit/cutter for aluminum blocks.
Dragmasters website is a deadend.
So i just drove around stopping at every auto store i saw asking if they could machine my block to no avail.
Saw a carquest and they have a machine shop around back. So for surfacing, honing bearing sizing and 2 jet baths, 1 before machining 1 after....145.00
If someone has a truly horrible experience with this shop, then i give up on finding a close shop and be in contact with you Steve Shadows to talk more about Alis Machine.
Anybody have anything bad to say about the carquest off of mission in Oceanside, CA.? The tech i talked to who will actually be doing the work is named Guy. Also, how do you get the water fittings, dipstick tube, and oil catch can drain tube out. Are these pressed in with a sealant (which is what it looks like) or threaded in? And just so I don't piss in anyone's cherrios, am i good to keep this thread for my rebuild or should i start another thread like killer2001 reamed me for? Thanks.

The tech at carquest said that if my other pistons are not fowled they are good to reuse and just to buy one piston if I'm on a serious budget. I'm inclined to believe him that it is possible, but I'm thinking my budget can allow for 4 new pistons for a well balanced motor and peace of mind. Curious as to what people think of this.

There should be a ton of machine shops in Oceanside, its SoCal after all lol.. If you're on base you can try and find my dad n ask him about it, he's in charge of the hui line in hangar 1, David Adams (civilian), he'll proly know someone. And there's another kid in there that works for him that has a 240 named Carter, he should know someone too. Just tell my dad I saw your post on zilvia and told you to pick his brain.

You know you would think there would be a shit ton of shops, and I'm not saying i visited them all but pretty damn close. I spent 4 days just calling places, and about 7 hours driving around stopping at auto shops asking them for where to go. When I'd get to the recommended shop, they either couldn't do aluminum, didn't do 4 bangers or didnt do machining at all on blocks. Carquest has a machine shop and i talked to their tech. Shop seems really nice and Guy, the tech had a waiting list for work so that's a good sign that lots of others take their shit to. I askede him who he did work for as far as local shops and 3 of the ones he mentioned I had been to earlier that day and never once did they metion Carquest to me. So I'm hoping he's like their best kept little secret or something. Either way I'm having him do the work just as soon as get those damn tubes out of the block.
Idahotuner- my buddy jason sent his off to mazworx too, but i cant afford that right now. thanks tho.
pacotaco-if this doest work out i will consider stalking ur dad down for his recommendations.
