Hi guys, I was trying to do roof rack research but didn't come up with anything on building a custom roof rack for my s14 to carry wheels to events. Has anyone made a custom rack specifically for hauling wheels? Any write ups anywhere on what you can use to make one?

don't think there would be any legal issues with this at all.

Before going out and spending money you should try something like this first. You could even lay them horizontally and strapping them down.

How would the roof hold up with 200+lb resting on top?

a regular roof rack should work fine. the weight rests on the roof, the rack is just to have something to strap em to.

the point of a roof rack is to transfer weight to the pillars, which can easily take 4 wheels worth of weight

Why make a custom rack? Yakima makes all the parks for you. I believe if you mix and match you can even get a Thule setup to work for you. Although assuming your car is gutted since you're doing events you should have plenty of room for wheels in there. There was a thread on here that had every part number for the Yakima parts. Try searching for that or just wait for one to go up for sale.

Plus adding a roof rack gives you an extra 100 hp. Then an additional 100 hp for each bike you put up there.

Install a removable hitch and tug a small trailer when you need to.
Racks are ugly.

Agreed. One-Lap of America does it right:

+1 for the hitch. keep your bumper on and the wheels off your roof

Nah, it's fine. As long as you have both outside mirrors, you don't need to be able to see out the rear window.
That applies to Cali, anyway. I can't vouch for other states.

Well, thanks for the ideas guys. I was thinking of the hitch thing, that would be cool. But I was just at my friend's work and the owner has a lot of random car parts and shit laying around. I spotted a beat looking thule roof rack. No idea what car it came off of but I got it for $10 bucks. I'm sure I could modify it to work. I might just need to get s14 clips and adapt them to it.
