hey guys so I went and grabbed a non-turbo'd 300zx diff and a 1993 j30 5 star bolt pattern half shaft and axles.

my problem is 1 of the half shaft (the longer side) does not fully fit into the 300zx diff, there is about 1/8 of an inch left to go. I have tried hammering it for hours and nothing.. The shorter half shaft fits right in no problem. I even tried a 95 j30 with the 6 bolt pattern and same results, the longer half shaft does not fully go in. I've read that using the j30 shafts with 300zx will work but no luck so far...is there a trick to doing this? I mean it should be straight forward...any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It will not go in any further

The other side fits perfectly

why didnt you keep the 5 bolt(star) halfshafts that originally came with the z32 diff?

I was told you needed to use the j30 axles and in order for that you needed the j30 halfshafts..

The thing you posted says the 300z halfshafts have to be modified or something.

You either need the Z32 output shafts or you will have to grind down the longer shaft and taper it accordingly. I had to do it to my J30 diff into S13 pumpkin, maintaining the 4.08 ring gear.

From the red line down needs to be grinded down.

If you use the J30 ring gear/pinion you will not have to modify the shaft.

edit:

Your shorter side doesn't look like its all the way in either... (it looks like its sticking out about 5mm too much).

edit2:

Please don't tell me you are using the stock z32 ring gear on your open differential pinion gear. That will be your problem right there. The ring gear and pinion gear are a SET, so must be used together otherwise you will have definite failure.

Are you serious? why didnt some of these write outs mention anything about grinding some metal? I have heard people had success with j30 halfshafts with 300zx diff without doing this...

edit: okay so I guess I will be looking for those 300zx output shafts then...either that or find a j30 diff

you were supposed to use 95-96 j30 axles
