View Full Version : Stripping Paint on Wheels?

Hey guys... picked up a set of used 300ZX wheels to use for drift practice, but they look super-cheesy because the previous owner painted them some "sunshine yellow" or something. Anyhow, I was thinking of stripping the paint off of them and repainting them a simple silver or something. I don't want to paint over them because when they chip, yellow will show through. I was wondring if anyone knows any good chemicals, special removers, etc. that I can use to get to the bare metal. I don't want to have a wheel or body shop take the paint off (save $$) and I want to do the strip/repaint myself (gratification). Any ideas?

soak the wheels into brake fluid....lol
that should work like a charm.

Apply paint remover using a thick paint brush and let it bake in for awhile. After say an hour...hose down the rims...i am pretty sure alot of shit will come out.
Slower process though.

use acid... they sell in hardware shop too 5 min to get my valve cover paint off.. but let a lot of spots in hard to reach spaces.. but for you you can just dump that stuff on it by gunks. and give it some more time so u know its off. but in 5 min you can see it bubling

There's stuff called "Aircraft Stripper" that you can get at auto parts stores...supposedly does wonders.
Aerosol can - So spray it on, let it sit, wipe it off. Done.
And it's not supposed to harm alminum...

Lol. I was about to post the same thing. I had a leaking rear caliper once that sprayed brake fluid all over my rim. It stripped every bit of clearcoat off the sucker. pitted the alloy too though.

Thanks for the input guys... I'm probably gonna pick up some stuff at the hardware store later today.
The brake fluid thing - I was waiting for someone to bring it up!
Also, brake cleaner took off the paint on my KYB's in seconds! But then again I don't wanna spend tons of $$ on brake cleaner =)

I have easily removed the paint on 2 sets of wheels, it is the fastest and easiest thing at cutting through the clearcoat that I have found.

There's this product called Jasco and it's freakin potent! I got it from Home Depot and that stuff will strip paint and flesh (if you're not careful) off in minutes. This stuff is great because it doesn't damage wood or metal.

The KS-3 stuff worked superb. Scary though how it just eats up all the layers of paint, but thanks everyone for the input :)

yah man i work at a bodyshop they have me strippin wheels and cars all the time... air craft paint remover works real well... sand blasting does too but it takes too daymn long and more costly then acid strippin.. its around 20 bucks at a auto store like kragen... i suggest to u, buy the odorless version.. be aware to wear thick gloves.. and goggles just incase u decide to flip shit around cause ur impatient....strip it under shade .. and keep it wet... cause the acid only stays active when its wet... dont go touching anything else when ur doing this cause it just plainly fucks up shit...use a paint brush to apply it... and shoot it off with a hose.. when its done bubblin off.. good luck
