Will Earthbound Comet Fulfill 2012 Prophecy? : Discovery News (http://news.discovery.com/space/will-earthbound-comet-fulfill-2012-prophecy.html)

Comet Elenin: Preview of a Coming Attraction - NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2011-135)

suppose to be the size of the US and come close enough to cause major flooding and earthquakes.

anyone heard of this?

it will probably burn up in the atmosphere like most do

Well obviously it's not going to enter the atmosphere, although that would cause flooding and earthquakes in a really fucked up way...

Anyways, I'm fairly certain people are worried that the proximity of the comet will affect us because of it's gravitational pull.

Not a large comet at all, not passing particularly close to earth. Definitely not "the size of the US".

Why does everyone want the world to end?

it says so in the article, "it will not come any closer than 22 million miles from earth and will not have any impact on tides/tec-plates."

Not a believer in 2012 end of the world...but the weather has been brutal the last few years.

unless you are talking about all the weird tornadoes, tsunamis, and major earthquakes worldwide the weather hasn't really been brutal in my area, but it HAS been strange the last couple of years.

for instance, this year it feels more like spring than summer in the sf bay area with random rain scattered in the middle of july. or maybe i'm just at work too damn much and when i get off it's already evening and cooled down.

Nothing is wrong with the weather! There's something wrong with people not being able to realize that our weather monitoring techniques are advancing along with the acceleration of our technology.

yea the bay weather been a funky... stay out of SF its perpetual fall or worse

Yea, this thing doesn't have enough gravitational pull to affect anything on this earth as is zooms past us. It will be too far away to do anything. It was cool to look at it through a telescope, its like a star with a cool ass tail coming out of it. Surreal shit

"one hundred billionth the mass of our moon. (The relative difference is roughly the same as the mass of a mosquito vs. the mass of an oil supertanker.)"

Same here in Oregon man, this summer has just been an extended spring. I dont know if that necessarily means "climate change" as the media portrays it, but something is up for sure. Its weird to still have rain and 60 degree weather in late July.

lol. The ones that burn up in the Atmosphere are about the size of a toaster, maybe VW bug at the largest.

Meteorites hit Earth all the time. Just Google it, our planet is littered with impact craters.
By 'all the time,' I mean every few thousand years or so. Modern humans just have not been around long enough to have the luck of witnessing it yet. However, by the time it should happen, we will have the technology to prevent it, as we pretty much already do now.

Bavarian town built inside a meteorite crater. :)

Yeah I remember when it was that the hale-bopp comet was gonna be the end, then it was Y2K and the computers were gonna shut down causing the end of the world, then it was that thing about the 7th day Adventists when they said the rapture was gonna happen like a few months back, and now this and the other 2012 things...

Look man you wanna know the truth about it all, It won't be a comet or an earthquake or a super volcano. Just open ur eyes the world is already in the shitter. It won't be some catastrophic event that will end the world, but hyper inflation, overpopulation, political corruption, environmental issues, pollution, war, and economic instability happening all together will cause this world to keep spiraling into into the sewer... Which is already happening

alot of end of the world movies do have black presidents

MurkyRiversS13
09-18-2012, 12:34 PM
Thats because they thought that having a black president was not a possibility.... then again..... they do own the movie and music industries..... as well as the government..... maybe those movies are a hint at what is to come..............or maybe they make movies like these to down play actual events........ like "OMG there is a giant meteor coming to earth".... "oh its ok, well just send Ben Affleck and Bruce Willis to go destroy it and all will be well"

What don't you understand? Environmental issues such as shifting climates or pollution not super volcanoes or some massive storm like in day after tomorrow.

The end of the world is an interesting subject. Not because of speculations of causes but solely because it is inevitable. Our sun will died out eventually and even if it does not (and it will) our current orbit will send our planet off in deep space. Be it that these events will not occur for billions of years from now, but even then on a larger scale when our galaxy collides with our neighboring spiral galaxy the Andromeda, we are destined to be destroyed. Now that leads us to current events, what can we do to prolong our existence?

Well a strong space program helps. Without that, technology and research is developed slower and our chances of surviving impact of any foreign objects are basically non existent. Terrestrial factors as mentioned are of more immediate concern than an object impacting our planet. Floods, volcanoes, temperature and climate change are observable now, but not yet on a global scale. Now when you say "the of the world", I assume you mean for us humans or even mammals. Because life on Earth will go on as long as their is liquid water. Micro-organisms thrive in harsh environments and will eventually evolve once again over millions of years as they have in the past. So as long is there is a planet, and it is in the "Goldilocks zone"; there will be life. But humans are not so lucky. We are not very special and we are poorly designed so our existence is fragile. Our species came from an aggressive past. As soon as we could find a way to kill each other we would. Even today we call our live "civil" yet we wage wars over petty issues like superstitions, tradition, and greed. Even in the famous drake equation to find intelligent life in a galaxy, the amount of potential planets to host life even then only stands a 50/50 chance to survive extinction due to their own genocide.

So if we don't kill ourselves, and there are no immediate threats by impending impacts of comets/asteroids/whatever; we still have natural disaster and man-made natural disasters. We can detect most major natural disasters, and we can prevent all man-made natural disasters. But it all comes down to, do we want to deal with it now or leave it up to future generations. And until this petty shit we as a society puts ahead of our more important priorities; it doesn't even matter.
