Its a 90 with 214k miles.
From 3400rpm-3900rpm there is a wierd swirling shimming of metal sound coming from my engine bay, and I know that cant be good. It isn't incredibly loud or quiet, and it isnt high pitched or deep tone, it sounds like a swiriling metal sound. Almost like a chain. Is my timing off or something? Car smokes a little past 5k rpm, and burns a oil, about a qt a month.
Any ideas?
thanks.

Is the motor worth anything to you? It sounds like it has something to do with the timing chain. If the motor is worth anything to you, I'd take off the front timing cover and check and see for any broken guides. As far as burning oil goes... :-/ if it is worth it, again, get a new set of rings and rebuild the thing.
Why not just trash the thing and pick up another lower-mileage KA?

Thats what I am going to do when I have more time. Soon as this semester of college is done i'll have some freetime. But I want to fix this problem now so the car wont crap out until then, lol.
