ok I just did my first sr swap and the motor runs great but I am trying to tie up the loose ends and having some trouble

first off I can't get the electric fans I have to work at all. it seem pretty straight forward 1 power 1 ground. so I just wired it to a switch in the cabin. the switch lights up and all but when I try and turn it on the on only thing that happen is the wires start got get hot..

are my fans shot? If i run a relay in the circuit would that help any?

2nd probem. this is my first turbo car as well so I was trying to hook up my boost gauge and think i made a dumb mistake. I welded the bung onto the hot pipe and the boost gauge dosn't read any vac at idle and say its boosting to 12psi and I know its only at like 7 or 8. So am i a dumb ass and supposed to put it on the cold pipe?

thanks for any and all help I just don't want to have to spend money on another set of fans unless these are shot. they look new and now that I have my bumper on my car is overheating if i am not going more then 45mph

Test you fans on your battery, make sure they work. Draw a schematic of your wiring for your fans, post it someone will help you out.

You need to connect the boost gauge to a vacuum source after the throttle body. You can do this multiple ways, So you'll have to search and find what works best for you.

Yeah he's rite put the fans directly to power and ground at the battery and see if the turn on it should take you less than 2 seconds to know if they are shot. The boost gauge connects at the throttle to one of the ports.

yea i will try to go straight from the battery

but how the nylon hose won't work i tried to get a 1/4 vac hose over one of the nips and then stick the nylon hose into the vac line and that didn't help

maybe I could drill into the collector and weld on a nut to make a bung but thats a pita

Ok on the sr motors at the throttle body u should have 1 vacuume line going strait to da blow off valve thats usually the big port. There one other vacuume line that goes to the fuel pressure regulator n there is usually a "t" fitting there and i beleave thats where mine is connected and most other cars i know. Im kinda drawing a blank rite now but i gotta move my car in like a half hour so ill double check and get back to you.

this guy is correct, boost gauge tee's into the fuel pressure regulator vaccuum line. That way it will read what mani pressure actually is. As for your fans, jumper them straight to the battery and see if they turn on. If they dont, then throw them away. If they do, then its time to fix what ever you spliced into and rewire the switch to a constant 12v source. Then from the switch to the fans. A ground is a ground, just make sure your grounded to naked metal. Painted metal wont ground worth a damn. And the cleaner you get it, the better the connection will be. Just rattle can over it after its secured down.

i didn't splice into anything for the fans just ran a wire from the bat to the swith to the fans then the ground. there isn't much to fuck up there.

so would like napa sell a nipple to screew into the back of the boost gauge? all i have is this shitty nylon hose shit and that won't work

what kind of boost gauge do u have?

autometer

i also have a cheapo "faze" one layin around somewere

i've never been a big fan of autometer, and as far as the nipple is concerned? are you talking about a barbed fitting? you can get those from any hardware store

What you did IS fucked up, sorry to tell you man. You need a relay in there, all the current for those fans is running through wires that are more than likely too small, and a switch not meant to handle but MAYBE a tenth of the current you're running. If that. You need a relay in there. Otherwise you're looking at starting a fire.

What I'd do if you want them toggled, is this:

Switch gets one wire hooked to ground, the other goes out to the relay. If using a universal Bosch relay (like you buy off the shelf at any auto parts store), then pin 85 gets that signal from the switch. Pin 86 on the relay goes to a 12v source, either battery, or what I prefer is a source that turns off with the key. Saves running the battery down. Pin 30 of the relay goes to the battery. Pin 87 goes to the + side of the fan. The - side of the fan goes to ground. Heres a relay schematic so you know whats what:

Thats how I'd do it, at least.

Oh: and fuse fuse fuse. Anywhere you hook a wire to 12 volts, put a fuse there. The big one to pin 30 on the relay will need a heavier gauge wire (12 gauge maybe) and most likely a 30 amp fuse. The small one to pin 86 needs only a small wire and a 5 amp fuse.

thanks! yea I was only using 18 gauge wires and the switch i used if for a fog light.

just rebuilt my motor and it runs like a swiss watch but can't figure out how to wire a fan, go figure haha

the wires on teh fan and the plugs for the fan look like 18 gauge though???

i am just wondering if i can get one that will fit on the gauge

Well whatever wires the fan uses, match them then. The shorter the wire, the smaller it can be without any issues.

word sux

eh the wires are kinda long since they have to run from the switch in the cockpit to the rad support

copmagnet

Not anymore!!! The ones that power the fan will only run from the relay to the fan, and from the relay to the battery. Put the relay in between the battery and fans, under the hood. The one from the switch will only power the relay, it only sends a tiny signal and only needs a tiny wire.

So: pin 30 and pin 87 will need heavier wires, as well as the ground for the fans. the other wires on the relay and switch can all be smaller gauge wires.

guess i know what i am doing tomrrow

you should be able to find one no problem, just take the gauge with you and test fit, and use some teflon tape on the threads

well i tested my fans today and i think they are fucked

one didnt do anything at all and the other one the wires just sparked and the fan did nothing. I think the previous owner that swaped this motorset into another car fucked them up since he did a hack job on just about everything

get some altima e-fans theyre cheap and work great
