sup every1. ok i got 1995 240sx etc etc. basically i bottomed out + suddenly very cold weather = car starts having all kinds of weird problems. i had 4 strange noises from the car. one is definitely the timing chain rattle; mad annoying ticking when i accelerate or sometimes when i idle from the front of the engine (chain guides? i can fix -hopefully=). another is probably a bad throwout bearing which gives me a funky noise during clutch in + idle ( i won't bother to fix it... buying a used ka24de tranny is so cheap anyway). i need help figuring out the last two.

the one i'm really concerned about is a kind of metal on metal noise i hear when my left rear wheel goes over bumps. sounds like something metal is touching something else while one or the other is rotating. i'll hit a bump, it'll make the noise for a few secs and then go away. i'm thinking maybe something got knocked a bit loose and is touching the rotor or something as it turns, and then settles back into its normal position after a few seconds. any help here would be appreciated.

i'm going to take the wheel off this weekend and take a look but it'd help if you guys give me some pointers as to what to look for. i'm pretty much new to the 240's mechanics (or mechanics in general). i got a fsm per advice and i'm trying to learn more right now. plz advise :X

If I were you I'd jack up the rear end and spin that rear left rotating assmebly. Maybe your dust shield is bent and hits the rotor? Maybe the caliper is loose? Maybe your hub bearing is bad? I would just jack it up (ebrake off, in neutral....be careful tho....put stuff under the tires to keep your car from moving) and poke around to see whats loose.

I bet I know what it is... this happened to me - check the e-brake lines and make sure one didn't come out of its bracket and start rubbing on the driveshaft... thats what happened to me.

Does the rattle sound like metal on metal? Because if it's a timing chain rattle, it's sound like a piece of metal boucing up and down inside the valve cover on the timing chain. And you'll only hear it when you're idling. Try checking your injectors.

A new throwout bearing will cost only $35 from Nissan brand new. Why would you want to change the tranny if you could just change the throwout bearing.. That makes no sense..

i bet your metal on metal sound is exactly what i had. since it got cold my last heat shield above my muffler began rattling so i took it off. to check and see if it is play with it and see if its the same noise you hear. hopefully it is because it is easy to remove.

Cuz taking apart your tranny is a BIOTCH and paying someone else to do it is a bigger one.

thanks guys. i'm going to pull out my fsm tomorrow and look up all those components you mentioned lol. hopefully i piece whats what together. i gotta buy 2 jacks though :X ... luckily my place's parking lot has concrete blocks at the parking spaces. i think i can use those to brace the front of the car. maybe ill get some bricks or something too? hm.

the timing chain rattle i hear is sounds exactly like that. a bit of metal bouncing around randomly during idle. it also makes more noise during acceleration though. a steady tak tak tak tak. it slows down and speeds up with the rpms. the sound is the same as the random bouncing during idle. to complicate things my engine mounts are a bit worn. the engine flaps a bit during start up. do you think this would effect it? i was going to try the polyurethane quick fix that i saw somewhere on zilvia...

anyway, thanks for your input guys! zilvia rules ... :)

edit: i'm also going to try changing the oil... i read something about oil pressure + cold weather + tensioners and rocker arms causing tensioner tap or something. im going to try a different viccosity engine oil... thanks again.

But the throwout bearing is inside the bell housing of the transmission. All you have to do is drop the tranny, remove the clutch fork and spring, then the throwout comes right out. Have it pressed off of the holder and press in the new one.
