Just curious because Ive been throwing around the idea for a few weeks now on investing in a catco or other 3" cat. Or installing a resonator in my catback for some decreqse in db. The cops actualy arent as hard out on exhausts as they used to be around here, I think my middle aged ears are just catching up with me. So who here runs a cat and does it impact performance that badly?

Setup:
s13 blacktop
18g turbo
Apexi power fc
3" turbo back

Don't think there would be that big a difference in test pipe and 3" Cat for performance. I have a test pipe that came on my car (pre-turbo) and after boost I'm rich so would worry about clogging the Cat pretty quickly, that's the only reason I haven't gotten one.

depending on your cat, usually it will decrease in performance. its actually slowing down your exhaust air flow. resonator would be your best choice unless if you really care about polluting the environment then get a high performance cat.

I had a Magnaflow 3in cat and I couldn't tell the difference. ( on a Apexi' dual N1)

I've ran Catco high flow ones before
again, couldn't tell the difference
I'd run one, save the environment and trees and all that jazz

I have a 3in high flow cat and resonator on my stock SR. Ive driven my freinds stock SR with a straight pipe as well. Just alot louder.

On my SR, I had one of those 3" Catco cats that Heavy Throttle used to sell. Did the job fine, bolted right up. I drove with it for about 2 years then switched to a 3" turbo elbow that deleted the cat.

I barely noticed a difference. The pops on shift / decel were a little louder but that's to be expected.

I think if you're using bolt-on exhaust stuff, it doesn't hurt to use the cat (though you can often get the test pipe for near the same price). If you're doing full custom exhaust though, fuck it, skip the cat.

I have a stock cat in, but full 3 in other than that. I like the way it sound so I will never change it. And doesn't seem to affect power at all.

i dont run a cat on my ka-t, the turbo should muffle the sound significantly. my cars alot quieter than my friends n/a ka with a catco high flow cat + greddy catback

just run a resonator on your catback and you should be good. if not it'll sound high pitched and raspy as fuck most of the time.

Back pressure is evident in my car even using a hi-flow cat. Test pipes are cheaper anyways.

i'm running a test pipe on my ka-t its not loud at all until the wastegate opens but it does backfire louder and pops more on decel.

Unless its a smaller cat then was made for the car, it really should not have any noticeable effect on performance. High flow cats are better though , from a Performance perspective just like opening up your exhaust to flow better.

Seriously at this point anytime, I would run a cat on any setup. Global warming is real.

High flow cats really do not impeed flow too much vs just a testpipe. The problem is that cats are more expensive. You'll maybe lose 1 hp tops. Save the planet and get a cat, it'll keep you car smelling so fresh and so clean clean.

I have no cat. But if I had a catco high flow 3" cat, best believe I would run it.

How much quieter does the 3" cat really sound in comparison to a test pipe?

I doubt there is much difference in how quite a car is with a cat vs test pipe. Cats are not mufflers. LOL if you are concerned about sound perhaps you need a resonator or secondary midsection muffler.

The only difference is with a test pipe you will possibly get more pop or backfire which can be noisier on occasion. LOL

Made very little difference on mine. I could hear the turbo spool a little more clearly and as I said earlier, pops on decel were a little more pronounced. Probably 5% deviation if anything, so very little.
