When you go to look for one just make sure you have a thorough inspection done by someone you trust, i.e. (Dad, Bf, Mechanic you know, Friend who drives 240's.) They can be extremely easy to work with and if you don't just buy the first thing you see they can actually be reasonably inexpensive to own outside of general maintenance. Just be careful and have patience when looking for one to purchase, If possible buy one with light or no modifications done to it. Goodluck.

Don't worry about high miles, faded paint, or busted-looking interior, worry about quarter panel damage and rust. Goes a LONG way.

240s = rust, old, will need motor work cause these motors are old and have high milage (either a full rebuild or SR swap but you in cali which has smog laws so that will be an issue)
and you will be spending ALOT of money to make it run good and look nice the way you want it. so if you dont have alot of money or patients to slowly do things on it the right way (dont make it your daily unless you know to address the important things of performance > visual, cause you dont want it to break down on you). you will be talking to your car alot when doing PITA jobs on it, but you will get thru it and feel good about it. but then when you finally sell the car (it will happen eventually ...), your gonna feel attached cause you went thru all that PITA blood, sweat n tears. But then you get the sense of knowing you did it and built her up, and the guy buyin your car has a "bought not built" car :)

Honestly, rust isn't a -huge- issue in California. It's not like we salt the roads out here. Biggest thing, just plan on refreshing the engine. Easiest way around things. Gaskets and seals should be first, of course fluids with those. Start addressing bushings, suspension arms, struts and springs. Get it to a good base, then figure out where you want to go from there.

I did none of these things. I am now on my second motor, and after spinning a bearing on it, I'm rebuilding it. So, yeah. Do those things.

Just like with any car, you should look over it with a fine tooth comb. Bring a magnet with you to find any hidden body repairs. Check all the hidden seams to see if they are split. Look into the engine bay to see the relation of the firewall to the frame rails, there should be a slight gap there. The more you spend, the less likely that you'll find a basket case. Try and find a bone stock 240, or one that has been tastefully modified.

Keep in mind that even tastefully modified, can mean problems later on. check for any leaks. Oil, anti-freeze, and anything else. Take it for a test drive, and leave the radio off. Listen for any weird or odd sounds that aren't typical to 240's. You can find a bunch of info on how they should sound here and all over the web.

Honestly If you really want a 240 look for a really clean one.

here is a bit of a check list to help further guide you on your journey.

1. make sure it has not been molested (Take someone who has automotive knowledge and has a few cars, and some idiot who claims to know all about cars because he watched inital d and drove and did a oil change on his dads vett)

2. Clean title is always a good sign also carfax is now free use it doesn't hurt.

3. When calling or meeting with the seller be observant of them and it will tell you about there car. Maintenance records or receipts always good so you know things were done right ( I preferably would look for older sellers elderly in specific they tend to take the best care of cars if you find a original owner and price is right jump on it.

If you find one within this chances are you can have a clean 240 that will be reliable and not give you to much head ache just take car of it and keep it in top shape at all times and you will love your car slowly mod it or whatever your plans are with it

bottom line find and nice clean car and enjoy and be proud of it!!

Krista, if you're not willing to put in the wrench time or work long hours to get enough money to pay some one else to do it for you, I strongly suggest getting something newer yet relatively inexpensive. For the money that you'll spend to make a 240sx decently nice & quick, you could buy an S2000 instead and save yourself the trouble/hassle/effort.

The biggest problem I have with mine is not having enough money to get all the cool shit I want for it. Its an investment for sure. I would suggest getting an S14 (95-98) for a fresher car to build, get one bone stock.

Easy way to find information is search. Or go through trial and error. I bought my first 240, it had alot of bolt ons but I bought it without looking it all over. Brought it home to realize it was all rotted underneath. Then I bought a clean shell and swapped everything over. That taught me alot about these cars.

But google it, there are many write ups already on this subject. Long, step by step how-to's and what-to-look-for's. Hell, I think sport compact car did a whole damn article on what to look for when buying a 240. The info is out there, search for it instead of asking to be "fed".

I agree with a lot of the what the others are saying, i'd just like to add something to the things to look for when assessing whether a car (any car, not just a 240) is worth purchasing:

Look at how the body panels fit, if they seem to be uneven and the doors don't close right, then there's likely a major problem with the body. Mechanical problems can be fixed pretty easily (although not always inexpensively), but body problems are a hole other ballgame, especially if it's not just rusty. If there's a kink in the framrails or the unibody panels, or the body is twisted due to an accident, then it'll never be the same as factory. Even if you took it to a body shop, it would never be the same.

So take a really good long look at the body and how the panels fit together and if you see anything out of alignment, have someone you trust, or a professional shop, have a look at it.

I'm not saying you should simply walk away from a car just because it's gaps aren't perfect, however, nobody on zilvia would have bought their cars if that was the criteria. Just try to make sure you're not walking into a bodywork nightmare and are force to buy a new shell or new car just because the body was dead like Steinkrunk had to...

Hope that helps a bit...

There's just NO REPLACEMENT for EXPERIENCE .....

Good luck, glad to see another female interested in the scene...

If only Zilvia was this nice to every newcomer and not just a female. (I would call shens but eh....)

on topic:

the problems you'll run/ be running into are the same as with any 20+ year old car.

240's in particular though have problems like the headlights not working properly. HUD, power window/antenna (if applies).

S13 hatchbacks are notorious for trunk hatch rust.

And uh...since you're a female....just throwing this out there...

240 = dick magnet......240+female owner/driver = super dick magnet.

Best advice...do your own research, use the search function.

And welcome to Zilvia I guess.

This ^

Be prepared to put some money into it because things break when they get old. When I bought mine it was super clean but right after I bought it the clutch went out.

Seriously.

Want to learn about S-chassis? You can start by searching on google, reading various how-to's, watching videos on youtube, and searching on here.

As someone previously mentioned, it's a 20+ year old car. You can't expect it to be perfect.

You want some real/logical advice? Stay away from them. Unless you plan on spending around $2000-$3000 for a fair condition stock one and then another several hundred replacing bushings, ball joints, tune up, etc, I wouldn't bother.

They become money pits almost immediately.

Now, search. We're not here to spoon feed every single new member (girl or not, I could give a shit less).
