I started this thread to see how easy or difficult it is to get a Skyline, Silvia or 180sx in Japan.
The reason I am asking is because within the next few months, I will be finishing tech school and will then be stationed at an AFB. I will be hoping to get Japan (Either of the 3 major bases) and was going to look into getting a car. And if you know, which of the 3 has the biggest tuner scene and is the better place to go?
To be honest, I'm not sure if it's stupid posting this and asking but if anyone knows, let me know so I don't get my hopes up and have them crushed or I actually have something to look forward to
Thanks :-)

i know the rules have changed since ive been there (03-05) but if they havent, you have to get your license and then buy your car...or be a dumbass like me and buy your car and drive it semi-illegally (i had a world travelers license haha...couldnt do shit to me) I was near Kadena AFB...it was pretty laid back...

And all the cars you listed are like hondas in price. I bought my first car for 2000 bucks....1989 nissan Skyline GTS-T with rims, exhaust, coilovers, and three sets of drift tires:)

The guys in Misawa are pretty chill, but there isn't much else up there.
I like Yokota because of how close it is to other bigger cities in mainland.
I'd say Kadena/Okinawa as a whole has a pretty good scene.
Just don't get caught being stupid in the streets.

Have a bunch of friends at Yakota AFB. We normally get together on weekends and lap the C1 Circuit lol.
One of the guys just picked up an S15 from my company. He's planning to shove an LS1 in it real soon. Bit of a joint venture between him and another guy + help from Hey Man Garage (Shinji).

I can help you out if you are near or around the Kanto area. Perhaps take you to the auction house to find something real nice which matches your preferences if any. Of course there's probably a lot of junk on the bases too. Sadly many cars go to shit when dumb ass newb's touch them.

Misawa has a good scene we just avoid any association with American can clubs like the plague, they are our source of wrecked second hand parts if you catch my drift.
Also you should get your orders in a month.....
If you get Misawa look up Gaijindrift, if you get Okinawa lookup Zeroyon....

Thanks for all the info. I was reading some other Zilvia forums saying that Okinawa itself has a great scene. I imagined Tokyo would have the biggest since it's the biggest city and I would assume has the biggest population?
If I am fortunate enough to go, I would not act stupid on the streets with a car. I'm just looking to get something that is rare or near impossible to get in the states. You know, Silvia, Skyline. The cars that people here in the states would drool over.
Is it true also that Mustangs in Japan are the equivalent to, let's say a Skyline in the states? That the rarity and cost are both high
S14_ShyGuy
05-23-2011, 03:15 PM
And just for personal records, how expensive are Skylines and Silvias?
Depends on what you want....You can get an R32 for $6k or less most of the time, S14s and S13s can be had cheap too.
R33, R34, S15 are all still pretty pricey we are talking 10k or more and NO you won't be taking one of those back with you......If its not on the list the Military will laugh at you if you even bring the idea up!!!

Misawa is the shit. I was there for 6 years, and was forced to leave kicking and screaming. They opened up a track about 30 minutes away from the base. It's pretty kick ass.
You can get a car there very easily. Great group of guys there as well. Cant go wrong with misawa. What's your career field anyways?

Cyber Transport Systems. At the moment, I have 2 months left before I leave for basic training, but I like to look ahead and see what I can get into before I move somewhere. Considering that Japan has 3 bases, I'm bound to get 1 of them right? Haha One can only hope.
And yes, I know I won't be able to take one back with me. But it would be great to have one while I am there. Is it likely to take an STi back home? :-)
What kind of vehicles are on the list? haha

Put Yokota, Misawa and then Kadena. Car scene in Kadena isnt what it used to be. Barely anybody goes out driving nowadays and its been pretty quiet the last year before I left. Only thing going is going to our "track" half the size of a wal-mart parking lot.
You said Cyber Transport...Cable Dawg? If you are, you have a HIGH chance of going to Kadena since that shop is fucking huge. PM me if you got questions, I just left the Comm Squadron there.

I read that Okinawa has a huge scene but now you say it's dying? That's depressing.
For those of you who are in the AF, how often do you get to leave the base and do your own stuff within the city? I've got a lot of questions haha
What I'm looking forward to most (aside from the base and lifestyle), is meeting people at car meets or in clubs and making friends outside the base and being involved.

whaaaat?! the Oki scene died down? Damn that IS depressing. I learned how to drift at the docks with a SSgt there (USMC) If you do go to Kadena, go to a resturant called Mei House around 1 or 2 am on fridays and saturdays. There used to be a gangload of japanese guys in sick ass lowriders...impalas, regals, monte carlos....theyre pretty cool although they couldnt speak english that well...

Okinawa got bad when i left in 2008, I was there before they did that liberty card BS and curfew and moving everybody back on base, and banning ppl from going to Drift events.Oki was the heat before all that, although it didnt affect me much cuz I had a bunch of Local National freinds and we'd go party far away from the bases and out all night drift sessions with the locals. But they def started crackin down hard when i was leaving. You couldnt even just watch the locals street race in Mizugama with out OSI tryin to bust ya.Id go back in heart beat though, but would rather be a Civilian.but Im try to go back right now cuz I hate this shit hole is LA
Wow were any of you there when Aja and Cinaga were the place to be? Between 96 ~ 99 those joints were the shit.....Packed like crazy......
The same happened to Misawa, Hachinohe ports used to be the place to go....That place is SHUT down, you never see anyone out there anymore.....Now its Rokunohe, Aomori, and a few other UNDISCLOSED locations....

I lived in okinawa on kinser from 96-2000 (super young obviously)
And I used to hear the cars at aja. Just the sound fueled my love for cars.
And when I lived in Misawa I was talking to this guy that was talking about how he used to go to the ports a lot.
My friend used to drive around lake towada, I never went with him though.
Adding on:
I just realized I've come full circle in life, at least location wise.
I started going to daycare on kinser. And here I am first year of college done, typing this on kinser.
Also I started actual school at kadena and graduated from kadena high (even though i went to edgren for all except the last quarter)
I'm probably going to be enlisting soon, and hope I can get sent back over here.

Mizugama has been dead for years...once in a while you'd have cars out there racing but that only goes on for a few minutes before the cops roll thru now. Sometimes, they even leave an empty cop car with the cherries on just to spook people from dragging down Mizugama. Aja has been dead, even the locals dont go out there any more. They keep putting up new barriers and grip tape all over the place. Senega has been closed down for years, atleast going up the hills, they literally closed off that road. All you have is the road that goes around the island. I knew folks who would drift around that shit, but if you fuck up, you're going for a swim. For a while they were dragging out at Ikei but that shits been dead too. Shit, even Custom Nights at JUSCO is done. JUSCO finally had enough and started closing off that side of the parking lot early to keep folks from hanging out. Car shops closing down due to lack of business and shitty exchange rates. Folks are basically retiring from fucking around cars in general. The select few who still drives rarely comes out nowadays or have traded their shits for 4 door sedans. You wont find the 30-50 cars doing trains around a corner or having 5 sets of cars lining up on Mizugama shit in the heydays.
Most of the time now, people just go out on their own or just call up a couple of cars and just hit up all the places at once and just bounce from one place to another. Basically just cruise around the island, go to their favorite spots, hit it a couple of times or so, then bounce to a different spot. JPs wont do shit unless you are caught in the act...plus most folks will just run and JPs know better than to chase you down. As long as you stop and leave for the most part, they aint gonna fuck with you too much. There are spots up north that people go to but those are a trek and a half away. And if you crash, sucks to be you because it wont be cheap to get that shit towed out and back.

Wow, my heart is racing just thinking about going out to Japan. Reading these stories is amazing and depressing. It seems like cars just aren't the same anymore. The import/tuner scene in Nor. California is almost dead. So. California is better but bigger scene means more busts from cops.
For those of you who either live or are stationed in Japan, can you PM me? I got a lot of questions and maybe yall can help me and give me the inside scoop lol
Feel free to keep posting stories. :-)
Damn shame.....I remember when they first put the grip tape out at Aja, so everyone moved out on the port. Dudes were sliding under the trailers spectators were standing on....
People would flash the lights if someone lost it, and one car would come hauling balls through the area if the cops were coming......Ahhh yea the good times

Do a short tour in Korea and you get to pick your follow on base. You pick where you want to go after Korea, before you go to Korea, and you'll know where you're going. ...i think it made sense.
I've only been on Kadena for two years, but since I've been there, I can see 'the scene' dying down. If you're wanting to be part of it, find it. If you just want to works on cars, drive, and hang out with people with the same hobby... you can do that anywhere. If you do get kadena though, there are quite a few good people to get to know, just choose wisely whether you want to hang out with the chill people, or the people who total their cars every few days/weeks from doing stupid shit.
and to answer your question about going into 'the city'. If you live on base and have a blue card, you can go off base anytime you want, as long as it's not between midnight and 5am, tc1, or during a rock down.
...The select few who still drives rarely comes out nowadays or have traded their shits for 4 door sedans. ...

Yokota would be my pick if I were you. Then if you wanna see (not participate ofcourse lol) some racing, go around Sayama lake, if they still do it there. And if you can't find a car off base, there are always people selling on base.

Remote tour is Korea. You do a 15 month volunteer tour there, then you get to pick where you want to go next. Volunteer for Osan and only that. All other base suck donkey balls. Put that as your 1st overseas base and don't bother putting anything else for stateside.

Korea is a 12 month remote, and I'd pick Yongsan (they do have limited AF slots up there), then Osan. Fuck, I just came from Kunsan a few months ago and had a great time... it's definitely not the cake walk that Osan is though. Already put it back on my dream sheet for after I leave England.

For the most part, putting it there means you're going there. I don't think anyone explained how the follow-on system works accurately though... So, when you get selected for a remote tour assignment (Korea, Turkey, etc.) you get to list the bases you would like to go to after your tour is up; it looks similar to your dream sheet. You submit it, then about 2-3 weeks later they'll tell you which one they've selected you for. For example, when I got selected for Kunsan, I filled in my preference list like follows:
Yokota
Misawa
Kadena
Tokyo
Hickham
Ramstein
Lakenheath
...in that order. Now, I didn't have to pick 7 bases, but I did since I really didn't care where I went as long as it was overseas. I got picked for Lakenheath (UK), and that's where I'm currently at for another year. If you ONLY want to go to Japan, then ONLY put Japanese bases!! Don't just put them at the top and think you'll go there, because that was my mindset and look where I'm at now. Not that I hate it here or anything, just saying...
Hope that helps.
S14_ShyGuy
05-30-2011, 03:47 PM
I did know that the dream sheet was to tell them where you are interested in going but I was also told that if I pick, let's say Japan ONLY, and there is no room in Japan at any base, then I will be put where they want me. Not where I want.
That being said, should I fill every spot with a base I am interested in or still only ask for Korea first, and then ask for Japan after my tour?
My only worry is asking for Korea, and then once I am there finding out that I could have had Japan the whole time.
iStayBroke
05-30-2011, 09:42 PM
Seems like you answered your own question to me. Fill out the bases in Japan and then Korea.
If you don't get Japan, you are pretty much guaranteed Korea, and then you can choose a Japanese base after that.
If you do get Korea go for Osan or a AF spot on Yongsan if they have some open.
Everywhere else is crap.
fliprayzin240sx
05-31-2011, 12:25 AM
The chance of you going to Japan in general is small. Remember, your job is one of those jobs that's pretty much needed in every base. There's a reason its called a Dream Sheet. Some dreams do come true but AFPC in general have a bunch of angry, pissed off people that likes to piss on other people's dreams.
Go to Korea and ask for Japan as a follow on. Thats still not a guarantee but it pretty much bumps you on top of the list of folks to be picked to go to Japan. You're a young single airman, just dont fuck up by getting an alcohol related incident and you will be golden.
S14_ShyGuy
05-31-2011, 03:30 AM
I'm not a drinker and I don't wanna fuck up my career because of it. A guy I went to school with, whom I know only through passing, was kicked out for an alcohol related incident and everyone I know that knows him as well, makes fun of him and even talks trash and I don't wanna be the next one.
Back to serious stuff however, I have a pretty clear idea of what to do now. Yokota, Kadena, Misawa, Gungsan, Songtan.
Anyone think that's a bad list?
fliprayzin240sx
05-31-2011, 11:58 AM
Osan > Kunsan...you got alot more things to do in Osan since you're pretty much in Seoul, which is the capital. You go to Korea, you will drink. The question is whether or not you can control yourself. There's nothing wrong with having a couple drinks, just dont turn into an idiot when you do.
S14_ShyGuy
05-31-2011, 03:21 PM

Why would you ask somebody who's in the army? Their bases are nowhere close to where the AF bases are at. For the most part, Army bases are in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. If he says he was stationed anywhere else other than Camp Humphries...stop asking him questions cuz he'd be fucking clueless.
1. Select Korea
2. You want a guaranteed Follow on, that way you know where you are going before you go to Korea. If you don't request a guaranteed follow on you won't know where you are going till after you get to korea.
3. Do your short tour done, PCS

But I warn you now, overseas duty locations have a tempo that is about the same as 2 stateside locations.

All depends on where you go. I was in Travis AFB before I went to Kadena. I can say that the Ops Tempo between the 2 is similar. Shit I didnt understand tho is why our deployment rate out of KAB is alot higher. You're pretty much out the door for 8 months every 1.5-2 yrs.

By the way, Kunsan is in Kunsan (pronounced "Gunsan") , Osan is in Songtan, and Yongsan is in Seoul.
But, I agree with what was said above for the most part. Yongsan (an Army base) is kind of like a gem since it's a huge base in a great location with a lot of things to see/do in the local area, and you have Itaewon right outside the base which has a ton of shopping, and restaurants that you're probably familiar with. If you're comparing Korean bases, it would go #1 Yongsan, #2 Osan... and then Kunsan around #14 or so since it's a shitty base in a shitty location. The only real benefit of it is that you'll be close with the people you work with since everyone hangs out together (read: drinks). But truthfully, and anyone will tell you this, it's going to be what you make of it. Like I said before, I had a great time when I was there.
I went to Shady J and they had like a Surge day or 2, I never heard of a Surge day, the only thing I knew was a surge week or longer....
Hope OP gets what he wants though, the dream sheets are heart breakers!

I just got done with Osan about 3 weeks ago, on my COT leave right now and god it is glorious. Osan was downright horrible job wise, but I'm flightline so it was very high paced. Other than that the country itself wasn't too bad and the year goes by pretty quick. I bet if you put Osan anywhere on your dream sheet, they'll scoop you up. I had Osan 5th on mine and got picked for it. Changed my dream up as soon as I got a rip to Osan. Originally wanted Spangdahlem, then Kadena, but got Kadena instead and I'm pretty damned excited about it.

HAHA....TRUE!! When I found out my wife was coming to Kadena, I got pretty excited about getting a Skyline. Then I got here and saw the dorm parking lots full of them. Many for sale on base are auto and/or 4 door. Most of the Skylines around are R33. In fact, I haven't seen a true R34 GTR around...except one possibly off base. I was driving down the street...err quickly...but it was definitely a Japanese dude behind the wheel. I was stoked when I saw my Silvia for sale.
If you come to Kadena, you will get your driver's brief on probably your first Wednesday here. They give you your license and then you are free to purchase. If you already have the cash, you can get one from anyone on base. If you go to a dealer off base you will probably need your SOFA license. Also, if you see something you like on the Kadena Lemon lot, but don't have the cash, there is a great financing place out gate 1. They charge 1% interest per month and it's easy to get the loan. If you haven't already, check out Okinawa Bookoo. Type that into google. It's like Craigslist for Okinawa. You will find tons of cars on there. The site is down on Sunday for us, so don't panic if you can't get in today.
If you really want to buy from a dealer, just be forwarned that most don't warranty turbo cars. If you are looking for a Japanese sports car, your best bet is to get it from someone on base.

Man this post is full of alot of confusing ass info that will get the OP fucked over pretty fast...
Firstly....If you put korea on your "straight outta basic" dream sheet you will either get it or you wont. And if you do get it chances are you wont get a follow on. Shit is just like one person said, just a random guess. But here is how to improve your chances of getting your end result. Either put....All japanese bases, open japan, and then kunsan or osan, then open korea. Nothing else. No stateside bases nothing. Just those options
If you get japan, good for you. If you get korea you have these options. Firstly, you will want to know all about your follow on crap. You mightve been told you were going to get one before you left tech school, maybe not.
Either way when you get to korea they will tell you that your choices will be decided off of your dream sheet info. Whatever just make sure your dream sheet still has all three japanese bases and open japan just in case. Take off korea bases at this point, FYI. Also you will part of a cycle of overseas and stateside windows. Ill post that info up when i get to work as well but what im getting at, is that you have to play off this thing known as the equals listing. Knowing the cycles helps you out at this point because overseas windows open up every so often and they list all the available jobs for all overseas bases within your career field. Same goes with the stateside window/choices.
For a new guy like you, i would just check the list every month and reason being is because if you notice there is an opening at a base you want(kadena, misawa, yokota), change your dream sheet to reflect that one. Put it at the top while keeping the others below. This also will work if you get bum-fucked into a stateside assignment straight outta tech-school.
Anywho, moving on....now if you are still stuck on the "follow-on" assignment thing or just want to up your choices then you are really suppose to go into the VMPF to select and update your follow on list, which is very differnt to your dream sheet listing. Now when you go and update this listing ONLY put the base you want..Just one..If it gets denied, they (randolph/APFC) will inform you to choose again. And just for good measure make sure it is either your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd choice on your dream sheet. Now when you submit this, it goes past your base level and command level, up and to randolph/afpc for approval. If it gets approved, you will be notified through your MPF.
Later today ill post how to's for those interested in this stuff, as i dont belive the info gets out there that much.
Obviously been a while since the OP has posted in this thread, but im hoping to clarify this fuck fest of a thread a bit and hope someone can actually get something out of it.
Also kadena sucks donkey balls now compared to what it used to be. All that base is now is a place for old heads to talk about the "good ol days" and leave the young new folks stuck in cycles that get them into trouble...aka, crashing cars, causing wrecks, speeding up down croweded roads, speeding tickets, etc etc..... The old heads dont teach or help as much, with a justification that is along the lines of..."they" dont want to listen..wtf ever...If you do happen to get kadena, look out for yourself and have fun. That is my advice. The car community is pretty divided btwn the two groups that i just mentioned. If i were you, get good friends btwn them both, and youll have an even better time.
Btw there is no real track or "working" dyno on okinawa. All you got are the illegal drags outside the main gate, and some po-dunk parking lots where ppl drift or "auto-cross?" Tuning shops are limited to your buddies and whatever the hell you can do on our own...

in kadena you have to go way up north. There is a track up there, i forget what the name of it is since i havnt been there for over a year now. There is a shop on the strip that is good (Oraha Beach)

Nago circuit is now closed for drifting. Only thing they are allowing now is drag (1/8th mile if that) and gymkhana.

YUP. By the owner. Guess he was tired of all the tire chunks and no one ever cleaning up after themselves lol. Only allowing drag and gymkhana.
BUT, theres some meeting thats supposed to take place and they are trying to workout a deal.
Fuck man If only Kiyuna would cjarge a lil more at bokujyo to re-pave his lot, he would triple his money.

Shit, used that pothole to get better. Used that shit as reference to set me up for the apex. I started getting good at it and would shoot that between the front and back wheels.

Another question yall, is okinawayardsales.com and/or okinawa.bookoo.com run by military for military or is for locals?
Is there a similar website for areas around Yokota and Misawa?

bookoo is pretty much all american and is also in Yokota and Misawa (though I'm not sure how active)
check out ????????????????? ?????? (http://www.o-cross.net/) for more okinawa (its in Japanese)
and GaijinDrift (http://gaijindrift.com/) and the forums there. (Misawa/some other parts of mainland)

I know a few people in Comm because one of my friends wife works in Comm. Tell your friends if they are into cars to look me up when they get to misawa.

Bookoo is actually based out of TX. Every base pretty much has its own version for that area, just a matter of how many people actually use it.
As far as your job, you got a good chance of going to Kadena more than anywhere else. Kadena's cyber transport shop is huge, when i left, they had about 60 folks and expecting to balloon up to 100-120. Basically mixed in the Cable Dawgs and some networking folks.
As far as Osan, I know a guy who's in Zeroyon that is already there. He's also a MSgt cyber transport guy...least I'm pretty sure he's doing that job after the merger. He became an ALS/NCO instructor the last couple years before I left. Look him up in Zeroyon...SN: 535iturbo, his name is TJ and he is in Korea already. Just shoot him a PM (flip Ray) and tell him I sent you if you got some questions.
Also, you want to go to Yokota as your first pick. Toss up now between Misawa and Kadena for your second since Okinawa is starting to get more and more car modding UNFRIENDLY. I'm hearing that one of the 2 semi-legal (semi legal because AF is illegal to drift ANYWHERE, even our local "track") drift spots we got shut down...

I'd prefer to not go to Kadena since I hear so much negative stuff about it but I hate cold weather so Misawa doesn't seem the best either. But I'd rather go to Misawa since it's mainland as well. It just sucks to know that nothing is guaranteed and to get your hopes up is shitty.
Well damn, I guess I'll just do my time in Korea with 2 of my best friends and see what comes out of it in the end. If I make it to Japan, I'll check to see if any of you are there at the same time. hahaha

I'm at Kadena on my second tour. First tour was in 2002-2006 as military and now i'm here as a civilian since 2010. The scene here has changed dramatically, for sure! Like it was mentioned above, the place I used to drift at is now closed (Nago). Went there one weekend to show my 6 year old what's up, but it was closed, I couldn't beleive it! Hardly any good shops for parts like there used to be, but you can still find some. I live near Up Garage, but there's hardly anything good and if you want to order something from mainland, it'll cost you a few bucks more because of shipping.
You can get any car here in okinawa, but it'll cost you more because they all come from mainland, this if you are buying from the dealer. You may get lucky if you buy one from someone on base for a decent price. Just an example: on my first tour, I bought my S13 Silvia Tommy Kaira edition for $1300 (red top)! It was auto, but I converted it to manual for $500. Now days, you'll be paying over $5000 for a decent s13 or 180sx.
Okinawa as a place is pretty decent, but the base ops tempo is nuts! The trade off of coming to okinawa is that you'll have good weather year round. It'll rain, but it won't snow and the cold season only lasts about 2 months, but it won't be really cold, so that's your trade off. If you go to mainland, it gets cold as heck!!!! But you have access to more cars, parts and tracks...chicks look better too! lol
Anyhow, good luck on you decision and please don't let any of our comments discourage you from anything. I still like it here on Okinawa and will be here for another two years...it's bearable to say the least.
Peace!

^^ thanks for the input. might be one of the few people that have said Okinawa is actually a nice place to be. Flight Chief here in tech school said it was pretty much "Poor man's Hawaii" but it was exactly the same, just less popular.
Well I already put in for my follow-on bases; Yokota first and Misawa second. If I don't get Japan, then I don't really care where I go lol. I'll make the best of it.
BTW, is anyone out at Osan?

NM about TJ, no clue if he's in Kunsan or Osan. For some reason, he's showing in global at both bases for some reason.
