I have been in search of a good Muay Thai or Boxing gym in Irvine area. I have tried Team Oyama and I will be visiting American Gym on monday. I know the only real good gyms are in LA county. I went to La Harbra boxing a few days ago, I really liked it, but they close early and I cannot make it after work.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Please and thanks..

Team Oyama is only good if they think you got talent, otherwise you have to waste away in their cardio class with little to no monitoring of your basic form until they think you've got enough stamina to do their actual Muay Thai course. I didn't like my experience here at all.
I heard good things about The REAL OC Muay Thai, Thaiboxing Thai Training Camp in Seal Beach, California (http://www.ocmuaythai.com) in Seal Beach. They run this as if you were training in Thailand. Workouts are pretty long and intensive. Expect to learn a lot here and get your ass kicked just trying to get conditioned here.
A couple of my friends train Muay Thai with Yuki Horuichi who runs his Muay Thai training out of a gym called Red Scorpion Martial Arts in Garden Grove. I went here to check it out and see how my friends train. They have actual fighters that come out of here too such as Shane Oblonsky and he's fighting a few months. Shane was going to fight on Buakaw's card in his August fight but Buakaw had some contract issues and now can't fight, sucks. There's no official schedule but you basically just come in M to Fri around 7pm and talk to Yuki. I planned on attending here with my friends but I may be moving out of OC.
I haven't been here yet to drop by but http://www.totalmmastudios.com/ seems to have everything from BJJ, Muay Thai, and Boxing. These guys are actually some former people from No Limits, since it closed down. Also, supposedly Brazilian Top Team is affiliated with them too.
I dropped by Mark Munoz's camp too, http://www.train2reign.com/. Wasn't too impressed with their boxing class and I wasn't interested in their Kickboxing class. Their Wrestling program and BJJ program I hear is top notch though if you're looking for that.
I also went down the street from Reign Training Center to http://www.ocjj.com/. They have a 30 day free trial and a small Muay Thai fundamentals program. Not probably what you're looking for as everyone there as their Muay Thai instructor only took MT at OC Muay Thai in Seal Beach for two years. They're more of a BJJ focused place.
There's also An American Gym | Boxing | Kickboxing | Sparring | Muay Thai | Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (http://www.anamericangym.com/) but I've never been here, just heard some things about this place.
This guy started posting this up in the Sherdog forums:

Hope that helps

Thanks that was very informative. I didnt really like Team Oyama because of the cardio boxing class. I was very disappointed it was pretty much like a 24 hour fitness aerobic class. I am looking for a gym that teaches fundamentals. My goal is to some day compete.
I will check out the red scorpion gym.

I train at American gym in costa Mesa. Pretty straight forward gym for strength training and has full weight room. They offer MT, boxing, and BJJ
It's also really affordable. I have a friend that trains at total in tustin and another buddy who instructs at kings mma in hb. Most gyms are 125-250$ per month American gym is super cheap 80$. I paid it all up front and got a banging deal
There's always hb ultimate lol

I'm a pretty knew member. I signed up there in feb as only spent like 4 weeks there before going in for surgery. I haven't really had a chance to train since then because of recovery. The few sparring sessions I experience were pretty good boxing wise. Haven't got a chance to kick around yet.

If you are looking to compete in only Muay Thai or Boxing, I would find a gym that focuses ONLY on that aspect of martial arts. If you aren't 100% on what sport you are wanting to compete, one of the all-inclusive gyms will do fine for the basics until you decide. I personally train at Reign and there is no section of the gym that I feel is weak. I have trained with many different people at many different gyms, and I still feel this way. Aside from the gyms mentioned, there is also Kings MMA in Huntington which Rafael Cordeiro runs. He was the former Chute Boxe coach that brought A. Silva, W. Silva, Shogun, Werdum, etc. to the top.

I hope your recovery goes well. I will definitely check out American Gym. I am hoping I can train and someday compete in amateur fights. I hope they can help me set that up.

I would really like muay thai but with the expensive cost of their classes I think I will stick to boxing. I have not heard of reign I will look them up.

I visited American Gym today. They gave me a quick tour and the facility looks new with nice equipment. I will try out the sparring class for free since the give a day pass. They are also doing a special for the summer $199 for three months. That equals to around $66 a month which is pretty cheap.
My friend trains out of Wild Card in LA. He wants me to train with him tonight and see how I like it. There is no way I can make trips from Irvine to LA everyday but I figured I should give it a try anyway.
I was recommended OC Boxing in Santa Ana. Anyone heard of that gym?

I visited Wild Card in LA last night. That was a great experience. Freddy Roach introduced himself to me and I had random trainers help me out throughout the night while I worked out. I was surrounded by pro's and amateur fighters.
I will be checking out OC Boxing out in Santa Ana. I'll let you guys know how that goes.
Thanks for your input guys.

I used to go to IMB Academy in Torrance. It's awesome. Sifu Richard Bustillo was a student of Bruce Lee.

Just curious, what didn't you like about Oyama?

Their Muay Thai classes are $150 and you cannot join it unless you are worthy to join. The aerobic kickboxing class is just exactly that, its just a step up from 24hr fitness's aerobic kickboxing classes.
OC Muay Thai is better in my opinion, but their price is $120 for their Muay Thai classes.

OH man this is perfect, been looking for a forum just like this. I too have been looking for a good muay thai gym that's on a cheaper side ... Can I ask how much red scorpion is charging per month? Also, have you tried the American gym's muay thai class yet? how's it?

I love reign training, jokers is awesome wit mike Guymon, if you’re near Huntington beach you have ultimate training center w/ tito Ortiz and rob mccllough, I think it’s called black market, it’s where aldo, dos santos, and a lot of the brazilian fighters train at. Hope this somewhat helps man. Too bad you’re not near Oceanside I’d recommend compound mma. My buddy is the ehad mma instructor there sean loeffler, or if u ever down in ventura come and train with us at knuckleheadz boxing w/ ultimate fighter season 13 winner tony el cucuy ferguson

At least please tell me this, is it more like an instructional type of classes or cardio where they drill you on conditioning for first half, then just hit bags for the second half? I'm not looking to join another cardio class, really want instructional classes where I may have a chance to compete in the future (and unfortunately I'm still broke, team Oyama is out of the question)
Anyone else has a recommendation on where to go for a good muay thai classes? I'm still new to the area and if it helps, I already have a 12 yrs of tkd and 1 yr of muay thai background, so not really a total noob here =)

Their boxing/kickboxing class is like that, more cardio the first half.
boxing and kickboxing are more of the conditioning type with some instruction.
Muay thai seems very instructional, the sparring sessions are like that as well.
If I were you Id go talk to Brian(the owner), and ask him to set you up a free training session, he does it for anyone interested.
