View Full Version : My SR S13 is SOOO slow (extreme hesitation)

Hey guys.

I have a 91 S13 with a Redtop SR20DET. It has an HKS downpipe, 2.25 inch exhaust, boost gauge, EGT gauge, Oil pres. gauge, and a K&N filter.

It is running ok whenever the boost is in vacuum. When you get on it, and get any boost at all, the engine just climbs really slow, and the car BARELY accelerates at all. It is faster in vacuum than it is at 10PSI. It seems like it is an I/C pipe leak, but I have tested for that. The FSM tells you to pinch the blowby hose, and the RPM should increase if you have a leak. mine stay the same. I have also tightened the snot out of all the pipes. The turbo os boosting at 10PSI, and it stays there like it should, the BOV sounds good, it is not leaking audibly, and the tubo sounds good too. At idle, I have 20 hg vacuum. ALso, the car was timed by my mechanic. And the ECU reads code 55 (all ok).

My vacuum setup:(no canister)
I/C pipe nipple to Wastgate(no electronics)
Screw in the nipple on the intake.
Large vacuum line on top of throttle body goes to BOV.
Small vacuum line on top of throttle body goes to FPR and boost gauge.
Small vacuum line on the bottom of the throttle body goes to the fuel system component near the tank (IDK what it is)

Does anyone have any guesses?

i thought the small vacuum line on the bottom goes to the canister..its plugged on mine...

plug the bottom nipple on the TB.

Thanks a lot for the replies.

I did have the lower TB nipple capped, until I found a vacuum line leading to a little box near the gas tank. It looks like a vacuum controlled fuel pressure device. I don't really know where it is supposed to go. Here is a pic of it. It has a tube that goes to a hardline, and that hardline goes to the engine bay, and follows the brake lines over to the master cylinder area, then goes forward and up to the charcoal canister area, where it goes back to a rubber line again. I tossed my canister, and I don't think it will do me any good to put it back in.

One other thing I thought of. Could this be a fuel injector problem? Where do I take them to have them flow tested? And wouldn't my car be detonating if it was leaning out like that? How easily can you hear detonation?

Thanks a bunch guys. I got it figured out. The timing was off. WHen I had my mechanic time it, he timed it off of the pig tail at the back of the valve cover for simplicity, but mine is off! So he timed it again off of cylinder no. 1, and it runs great! Now I can drift the snot out of it at PIR! (well try/learn how to...)

but really...does anyone have a supercharger in their car rather than a turbo? I would choose a supercharger for sure.

Not on a 2.0L I wouldn't. :p Turbos are more efficient on smaller displacement engines. :)
