i have a s14 blacktop sr20det
it was freshly rebuilt when i purchased it from previous owner about 2 months ago
The engine had the bottom ends rebuilt with forged pistons, solid lifters and borded out thats what the previous owner explained to me.
The engine itself is really clean no grease not even on the oil pan and gaskets are all new. The only problem is that it has a ticking noise (not a rod knock) coming from the valve cover area. I used thicker oil and it helped quiet down the noise a bit. On warm ups the engine is quiet, but after about 15 minutes of driving the ticking comes back. The noise is only at idle and never when driving and it does not affect performance what so ever. I have no idea what the problem could be. I have a feeling it could be the lifters but not really sure. If anyone could help or have any suggestions on what it is i would appreciate it.

You sure it's not just the sound of your solid lifters?

i was thinking that just wasnt to sure
because i know some guy that said his friend had a sr before with a ticking noise then one day he said the motor gave up so that kind of tripped me out because i do not have the money to fix it up if something happens

was the timing chain and guide tensioners replaced with the rebuild? that's a possibility...
do you have vtc cam gear still? it's always a chance that when you have vtc that it makes the noise too.

Maybe...not too thick though.

I run 15W-50 in my KA during summer in Cali. Not sure about SR's.
