View Full Version : FML2! ran over a bolder!

ok, so its not a boulder but a piece of cement(street) that was the size of a football. What happened was i was on my way to another zilvia members house to buy something from his for sale thread. He lives in a neighborhood where the roads are completely jacked. So its night time, raining, floor is wet, and in the middle of the street was a football size rock that has broken off from the ground and sitting on the street. What kills me is the person that lived at the house where this rock was in front of, didnt throw it off to the side. Anyways I end up running it over because anything else was too late of a reaction to do. The rock got ledged under the steering(area?), kinda in front of the oil pan. Well the guy selling me the stuff was nice enough to come drive out with a jack so we could get the rock out.
So after getting the rock out as we drive towards his house, i notice i cannot turn my steering wheel past 90 degrees. Anything further is extremely hard to turn. Long story short, on the way home about a mile before my house, my car starts smoking, and my car is overheating. Well i limp her home and inspect the car asap. I come to find out the rock had pulled the hose off the bottom part of the radiator. I also notice a small puddle of what looks like oil under my car, but looking at the oil pan there isnt any noticeable damage or signs of where it could be leaking. Then i also noticet the rock also ripped off my fan/power steering belt (im not sure what else it connects to).
So what i have done so far, is slowly start refilling the coolant since the engine is still scorching. I Wiped down the entire underside of my car in hopes that if there is a leak ill be able to find it.
At this point i am unsure if i have found everything that is wrong with my car. I didnt know just because i have no power steering, that turning the wheel would become THAT difficult. Is there anything else i can do as far as helping my car recover from overheating? I have a sr20 on the way from zerolift, but this still is my daily till i get the motor. Please any helpful input would be greatly appreciated.

If you have no fluid left in the rack, then turning it will be hard if you're at a dead stop.

Well friend, what i suggest doing, is getting her up on a lift (or car ramps, whatever is available) and doing a thorough inspection. Pay special attention to the oil pan gasket. And is it the serpentine belt that you are talking about? If it is your serpentine belt, you would lose your power steering and alternator. And if this is the case, dumping coolant in wont do you any good because the water pump isnt turning. Check all hoses for cuts/abrasions/or punctures. Check the rack and pinion for steering as well as your front suspension (all supporting features). Also if i were you i would check your motor mounts just to be safe. Hope this helps you man...sounds like a shitty day. Good luck!

as much as i hate it, i am starting to think the rack and pinion could possibly be damaged. But i dont want to jump to any conclusions until i get the belts fixed first. My main concern is getting the car to not overheat again. Im literally about 2 weeks until my sr gets put in, but i need the ka to daily until then. If after fixing the belts and my steering still feels the same, i think replacing the rack and pinion is alot easier with the engine out.

well, as far as overheating, you are definately missing your main water pump / power steering belt.
That would mean there is NO coolant circulation at all, so that's your overheating problem.
It also means that you don't have power steering.
The belt i speak of normally goes around the crank (bottom) pulley, the water pump (above the crank pulley) pulley, and the power steering pulley (driver's side of block).
Any parts store should have one for the KA for cheap.
Just need to loosen the powersteering pump to put it on.
Edit: as for the "oil puddle" check that your power steering low pressure lines (from the reservoir) didn't get damaged or pulled off...

....Why are you gonna pay to get this fixed if your gonna put an sr in??
Besides if you cant tell what is missing....why are you trying to fix it? You can totally see you are missing the belt that runs the water pump...probably why its ovrheating. Take it to someone that knows what their doing or just leave it alone till you get your swap....

Yes.
OP, are you very new to cars? Do you know which pulleys are for what accessory yet? It's time to sit down and learn all you can instead of paying someone else to do your work man, you'll get robbed!
Maybe (i dont know how low your car is) it's time to raise your car.
I think there's a chance your tie rods got bent by this incident too, so you should pop off your front wheels and inspect the steering linkage.

did i just hear the word SERPENTINE BELT?
is this zilvia? are we still talking about 240's? unless this is the (new) broadfield thread, there should be speak of the word SERPENTINE.
as others have pointed out, you lost an important belt and it is apparent you lack the skills and most likely the proper tools to do proper work and repair on your vehicle.
you should consider finding a mechanic, a competent one at that, to assist you with your vehicle. it will take a long time for you to purchase the necessary tools and acquire the knowledge to use them.

maybe you should consider buying something newer for a daily, but anyhow i would suggest putting the belts on and this should help most all your problems, it appears to be the water pump belt and ps belt any shop will be able to fix your car.

yea i posted earlier that i knew that belt for the power steering/water pump was not present, i just didnt know what else that belt connected. I checked the power steering hoses and they look fine, but i believe the rack and pinion is probably whats possibly damaged. i just dont want to jump to conclusions until i get the power steering up and running again.

its still my daily driver until i put the swap in. I live in california so the weather lately has been raining every day. so until it clears so i can ride my motorcycle to work, i cant swap. I dont care if the engine has damage, its gonna be replaced. Ill drive it till it blows up. but the steering problem is whats making me mad, because i dont wanna have to pay for a new rack and pinion.

as for raising my car, i dont think its that low. I have stance's on my car not even maxed out, and 18's. But the rock was seriously the size of a football and non of us would of made it. It was dark, and raining so visibility was an issue.

See that thinking right there is what gets you into problems....."I'll drive it till it blows up" and "I dont care if it gets damaged"....You gotta think smart. You talk like you got money to burn but you contradict that with "I dont want to have to pay". Say you get pulled over after your SR swap for whatever stupid reason and you got to take your car to a state referee. What the hell you gonna do? Drive up with a SR with non matching numbers and hope they dont notice. Be smart and keep that engine just in case. Or you could even sell it and put some money back in your pocket for the cost of the swap.
But most importantly....Learn about your car and how it works STOP DEPENDING ON OTHERS to solve your car problems.

i appreciate the helpful input from everyone here. I was just looking to see if anyone else on zilvia has had similar experiences that could chime in if they had the same problem. I pretty much figured out what was wrong with my car and knew what was going on, but in bad situations like this, its nice to get positive advice and different outlooks which i might of overlooked. As of right now, i currently am waiting to get off work so i can replace the belt, jack the car up again and take a closer look.
thanks for everyones positive/helpful insight.

well if you dont want it to overheat, the you need to get the water pump turning again. So your belts need to be replaced first...as for your rack and pinion, as soon as you get her back in decent shape, I would strongly suggest taking it to an area performance shop (not a normal mechanic...dont trust them haha) to have them inspect your rack and pinion. Or you could do it yourself by looking for cracks/bends stuff like that. But make sure you get your water pump turning. Who needs power steering anyways? lol

^^ Wow, this guy above is like the opposite of me. Even his avatar is similar to mine, but the colors are inverted. He's the positive bizarro version of me.
Funny how he made in my opinion, probably one of the most honest, caring, and informative posts.. and it gets completely overlooked. This guy's advice is worth gold. Do people care? NO. They just say "thanks I'll check it out." Yeah.... OK. Check it out.

As of right now, you should be towing your car to a REAL mechanic. As of right now, you shouldnt be wasting precious bandwidth which could be spent on my important things like big beautiful breasteses thread. Instead we have a football cement thread which could have been avoided if you had some good headlights. You know, the best headlights would have helped you avoid this accident. Think about it. First thing monday you need to run off and buy some REAL headlights. :-)

I'm very sorry to hear what happened man, but if was in your shoes I would have honestly bought and installed brighter lights with new housings, new wipers and a skid plate from PBM or Kazama before lowering my car. Seriously people, don't lower your car without having the proper equipment like a skid plate, nice bright ass lights or Q45/Z32 brakes upfront so you can stop on a DIME.. Also you should be driving slower around residential areas too.. That would of probably helped a bit.. :)
Again I'm sorry for what happened. You should complain to the city for using such low grade shit cement on our roads instead of REAL asphalt. This kind of shit doesn't ever happen in Europe or Japan..

ok so i got the new belt on, so car is running good again. Thanks everyone for your input. I am definitely getting pbm skid plates now, and i have z32 brake conversion going in also. Lights wise my car is actually really bright, but this road didnt have any lights, its raining, and the rock was actually a peice of the street, so it blended perfectly in the rain. The neighbors that stopped by to ask if i needed help, where also complaining about their own streets being so shitty. Not my neck of the woods, so ill probably never go there again.
