View Full Version : I need new struts

The guy at the tire shop says my tires are wearing because my car won't hold alignment. It won't hold alignment because of worn shocks/struts.

How much should I pay for front struts? I am figuring all it will cost is shop supplies, labor, two struts (OE), and an alignment, right?

Thanks,
Jeff

All it will cost is two struts (OE) and alignment because it's a very simple job you can do yourself :aw:

Just rent/borrow/buy a spring compresser for safty.

If they do it in 1 hour, it'll cost you atleast $60 and from my experience, when shops are paid by the hour they don't work very fast.

Assuming your time isn't more valuable than that, just do it yourself...shouldn't take more than 2hrs your first time.

I have a $150 credit from this guy (long story) and it expires soon. I hear it's an easy job though.

Well, I didn't want to explain it, because it's sort of irrelevent, but okay ;)

The guy said my stuts were blown, which causes it to go out of alignment fast. My tires were cupped. This was 2 years/20k ago when I bought the car. This was a local chain tire store. He might have been correct, might have just been trying to get a fat comission check for new shocks and tires. Who knows.

Now, I am taking it to a trusted mechanic who does Euro/Japanese cars. I'll get his verdict, but I believe the crappy tire shop guy. We'll see. Basically, I need new tires, which are expensive. I want to be sure my car will stay aligned after I align it, so the tires wear correctly. Follow?

http://www.coximport.com/ They have good struts at a cheap price with free shipping. As far as the labor and alignment, it shouldnt cost you more than 120-150 bucks for 2 struts and and front alignment.(shops charge 80 bucks an hour where i live and 40 bucks for front alignment)
