View Full Version : TEIN HA owners, couple of questions...

I just recieved my HA's in the mail today and had a couple of questions. First off, the height measuring guage is missing. Is it really useful, or is a ruler/measuring tape good enough? I paid for it, might as well get it, unless its worthless. Second question, my rear struts came with dust boots, but the front ones did not. Looking at the instructions, it does not show any on the front, just the rears, but it doesn't seem like a good idea to me to run them without the boots. Did anyone else get them, or are they all like that? Thanks in advance, hopefully I'll be throwing these on friday... :D

Heh, I was just searching and had one more question... When adjusting the valving, supposedly they are set full stiff from the factory, but I read in another thread that the adjustment screw doesn't have a stop to it, so how do you know where the valving is really set at? thanks in advance.

i didn't get any measuring tape. I assumed you just use any old measuring tape. And your rear struts came with dustboots? Are you sure you aren't looking at your front ones? The front coilover assembly is shorter than the rears. The fronts have two bolts on the bottom while the longer, rear ones have only one.
see? front one..

rear coilover installed..
about the damper adjustability thing. I heard that you just turn the adjustmet knob/screw all the way clockwise to full stiff (16). And then 15 clicks counter clock wise will set it at full soft (1).

Yep, I'm positive its the rears that came with dustboots.

Oh I read your profile. this is for a Maxima? Any which way, my rears don't have dustboots and I have no problems and I've had mine on for almost a year.

Nope, its for my 240, the Maxima is sold... and in your picture of your rears, I can see your dustboots??? ;)

OOPS! BIG OOPS! sorry, you're right. The rears DO come with dustboots. The fronts dont. Dood, I am trippinnnnnnnn

Its cool. As long as I'm not gonna have any problems with the front seals... ;)

HA's are prone to rust, try and keep them clean.

mine didn't come with a gauge either, i used a micrometer. there are no dust boots for the front due to clearance issues, just clean off the coilovers every once in a while. they'll be fine.
the adjustment doesn't completely stop, but, there is a very noticiable change in resistance. if you have to work to turn it, you went too far.

hows the ride quality on the HAs? i was thinking of getting them. its either that or just shock & spring combo.

i've never ridden on anything else besides my tein HA, but they are very streetable. It's pretty harsh for the first week or two only. Are the HAs still being produced?

HA's really aren't worth the money IMO because of there lack of features. No double height adjustability, no pillowballs, no front camber adjust and weak spring rates. Just get HE's or Flex.

HEs maybe too rough on the street, but im still considering it. FLEX is too damn expensive. :( why, oh why cant i win the lottery?

For what I plan to use them for, the HA's should be just fine... ;)
I know all about the corrosion problem, I already have some teflon coating to spray on the threads.

flex are the replacements for HA, but are more "street" than performance. to be honest it really doesn't matter what Tein setup you get, you have have them revalved and get different rate springs whenever you want. i bought my HAs when HEs were not yet brought back into production. HEs are kinda harsh for street, but if you are serious about handling, you really won't care. i haven't found the need yet for camber` adjustment and all that, and EDFC is just a gimmik. get what you think will suit you the best.

Zenkidori,
Actually no. Double heigth adjustability, which the flex DOES have is a VERY important factor. Most people who get a street type coilover do it so they can lower the car. However on the HA's when you lower the car it is ONLY by the spring perch, which kills shock travel. Which SUCKS. Where as on Flex and HE's the bottom perch is adjustable so you can lower the car all you want, set the spring perch at 0 preload (or whatever you preffer) and retain all the travel, just make sure you aren't bottoming out your tire in your wheel well. Also HE's were ALWAYS in production. True, thery were not "carried" is the US, but ANY reputable Tein dealer could have EASILY ordered them for you during that time period, its what I did. Also the HE's are not too harsh for street at all, I daily drive on them, and at setting 5 out of 16 it feels very soft. I drive with it around setting 10 because I preffer it that way. Personally I dont think EDFC is a gimmick either. With EDFC I could adjust the front and rear stifness in cockpit while taking laps around the track!! I think that rocks. For the first 10-20 laps when Im at the track all I care about is setting the car for the track, and I HATE it when I have to pull of the track becauese I know the car will handle better with a stiffer or harder setting front or rear. Becomes redundant and annoying, but it is worth it, and yes I'm lazy. Thats just me though. ;)

i guess im gonna have to take a ride with someone who has HEs on to see how harsh they really are. now i just have to find the sucker...uhhh i mean driver who'd let me ride with him
i like the flex a lot cuz of the softer ride (5/4 spring rates?), it wont rust, and its compatible with EDFC which i think rocks. but like i said, its like $300 more than HEs :(
oh yea, how bad is the rusting problem with the HAs?? is it a problem for us cali people too?

You can ride in mine, just drive to Long Beach. I dont see how Im being a sucker to help a guy out making a $1k+ decision??
Concerning the HA's they rust for most people, and the only people I know personally who have them live in SoCal.

I like my tein HA's
They are set at 6/10.
They are really good for the canyon drives and some drifting.
I woulda really liked some HE's...but they weren't in my budget.
A friend who also has the HA's.....talked to a Tein rep at D1, he said HA's arent being made anymore, and are replaced in US by "super street" which are softer and have diff valving.....

thanks for the offer jason, i might just have to take you up on it one of these days. :D
so HA rusting is that bad huh? sucks for me, i guess its now between HE and agx/sportline.

my friend is a tein dealer and gave me most of the info i have. i have never bottomed out ever and have had no problems with my coils. i have mine set just slightly lower than tein recommends and have never had a problem. even on bumpy colorado roads. i honestly believe the EDFC is superfluous and besides, tein recommends against changing settings while the car is in motion. it's kinda neat to have but not even close to being a necessity. hence a gimmik. i have no rust on my suspension and i don't even wash them regularly.
you really can't go wrong with tein IMO. you can keep changing them how ever you please, so if you become unhappy with the settings you can just have them changed.
Jason,
at the time HEs were only available from japan at a substantial markup. and they were the older version.

Substantial markup? UHMMM, NO! I got mine when HE's were "not in the US" directly from Japan through Titan Motorsports in Florida for 1090 shipped to my door. Took a week to get here too! Also, whats the difference between the older and newer version??

may i ask how you got such a good deal? the only coilovers i saw there for $1090 were HAs. not to mention, the site specializes in supras.
did u get them used?

yes, substantial markup. i could not find them for cheaper than the HAs anywhere. congratulations that you did. and i do not know what the differences are between old and new, i just know that the HEs were revamped by tein after i bought my HAs.
the point is you really can't go wrong with tein at all, no matter what setup you pick.
