View Full Version : electric heater?

I was thinking that if I am removing the a/c and keeping heat, instead of keeping the whole heater box and all the weight I could remove the hvac box and bypass the motor coolant heater lines. This would be beneficial because it would reduce alot of weight from the hvac box, controls, the coolant thats inside the heater core and lines. Also the electric heater(s) will heat regardless of the engine status (off/on, warm or cold) and heat would start to come out almost instantly. Has anyone thought about or actually done this? :hsdance:

Kind of what I am talking about, but its not electric
Danhard Under Dash-mount Heater with Defroster Duct Hose - JCWhitney (http://www.jcwhitney.com/under-dash-mount-heater-with-defroster-duct-hose/p2002939.jcwx?filterid=c2304j1#)

or this and wire up 6 of them each to there own switch to regulate heat. like 3 pointed at windshield and 3 at passangers right behind vents so you can aim and still block off flow if you want.

it seems more realistic to just keep the underdash shit

ive considered ditching it, but not easy getting a good clean heater that doesnt consume tons of amps

remember, to generate heat you need to consume amps.. no other way about it unless you use the heater core and OE setup

An electric heater is going to pull a lot of amps. You might have to upgrade the alternator to run it.

on that note. i have a 160 amp idle and 205 amp cruise rpm alternator that was for a 69 charger its a power master. its still new. It's v belt, but if it swap the serp. pulley from the stock alternator it should power everything nicely including a 1000 watt rms stereo IMO. my only concern is the v pulley is mounted to the cooling fan so if i swap pulleys itll delete the fan. its only drawing when I have the heater on and its a DD so if i lose a hp or 2 its ok. Im going to try to mount the big alt. either route I go.

Good luck. When you got stuck in the middle of snow storm and freeze to death, just remember we told you so. If you survived you can add in the thread stuff I regret doing to my 240.

I know that EV builders install electric heaters in their cars. I just read an article that states a guy tested a single ceramic element heater and measured it to pull ~1200 watts. Doesn't get as hot though. He also tested a dual element ceramic type and it pulled ~2200 watts. Also, if you are serious about it there are gas powered heaters available. I think the air cooled VW guys would have more info on that.

1200 watts at 12 volts is 100 amps. just something to think about.

I just wanted something smaller and lighter, or something removable. right now its 76 degrees out. I only need heat for a few months.

What about this and a 120v heater? I needed heat to warm up from about 25 degrees at the coldest. mostly 30+ degrees.

thank you

it was very kind and informative for you to share ohms law with us

:-)

btw, 100A is one hell of a current draw

it seems as though this thread is useless. You don't want to see the trouble/bad in swapping a very efficient and reliable oe setup for a expensive and below average electric set up.
