fellow Zilvians,
My fiancee was recently diagnosed with Sepsis after a recent surgery. She has been in the hospital since Monday and hasn't showed many signs of improvement. She has been on various antibiotics and hasn't made much if any progress. The dr's, are running low on options. We're trying to stay positive, we have plans to marry in April. I'm having a lot of trouble dealing with this. I should be her protector, and right now I am helpless...I am not even allowed to see her.
She is my best friend and one of my only friends.
I don't want to step on toes or be inappropriate by asking for prayers, but if you have any good vibes to spare, she could use all the help she can get.
i wish you and her the best. keep being positive, don't lose hope!

Many more thanks, the support you've all showed is overwhelming.
There hasn't been much change in her condition. The Dr's told her today that they'd like to operate on what might be abscesses at the point of her surgery. The downside is, they have anesthetize her and with a fever hovering around 104* she might not wake up. The flip side is that they put her on a central line to help get the medicine to her more quickly so her fever doesn't burn it up. However, she is already having heart and kidney issues and depending on the effectiveness of the meds, her condition could continue to worsen.
We're doing a lot of soul searching, trying to figure out which way to go on this decision.

Well, we decided to wait and see if the new meds made any difference and possibly have the surgery this afternoon. She was informed by the dr. this morning that her kidneys are in bad shape and that combined with her fever makes the surgery too risky. So now we're putting our faith and hopes in the antibiotics. She's having a hard time staying positive with the seemingly endless stream of bad news.
Your thoughts and prayers mean the world to us both...please keep us in them as we push through these dark times.

Thank you all for the wishes, she's been keeping up with the thread and she is very touched at the outpouring of support from people she's never met. As of Friday morning, her kidney's have gotten worse and her fever has risen higher. The doctor's have started dialysis and they have been giving her periodic ice baths to try and keep her temperature down. The latest plan is to bathe her at 1, 3 and 5am followed by surgery at 6. It is a very risky procedure considering her weakened state, but her options are growing limited. Please, if you're reading this, take a moment out to send her a good thought or two.

My prayers go out to you, man. As someone who works in the ICU and in the OR I know what you are dealing with. As risky as it may sound, the surgery is probably the only thing that can get her infection under control. The antibiotics will not work if she has a significant abscess and it must be drained if they are to get things under control. If she is young and otherwise healthy, the need for dialysis should be temporary and her kidneys will likely recover. I take it from your post that she is not intubated (does not have a breathing tube) so all things considered, it could be worse.
The fever doesn´t ¨burn up¨the antibiotics, as you mentioned. Rather, they want to place a central line because they can give stronger, more potent antibiotics through a central line than through a regular IV. Also, she may be experiencing such a high fever from a reaction to one of the meds she´s receiving. This could also contribute to her renal failure. Ask the MDs what they think about this possibility. It won´t hurt!
Also, depending upon where the abcesses are, it is possible for an Interventional Radiologist to place drains in them without her having to receive a general anesthetic. You can ask them that too!
Good luck and I hope she pulls through!

She had the surgery this morning and is currently in recovery. I'm very happy she made it...the down side is that the Dr.s failed to find any obvious sourceof infection, so now I'm not sure what our options are. Relying on the meds has become a scary and unnerving idea due to their lack of success thus far. Thank you to all of our friends on Zilviafor the uplifting messages and thoughts, I believe that part of the reason she pulled through the operation is because of all the people in her corner. Thank you all from the bottoms of our hearts.

We talked about that, would she just tell her Dr. that she wants a second diagnosis?
As of now, she's back in the ICU...still out of it because of the sedatives. They're trying to wake her slowly as to not cause shock to her weakened body. While they didn't find any obvious signs of infection, they removed a lot of bones chips from her back and are going to start her on antibiotics again soon.
I have no idea how you would go about that. Maybe a more knowledgeable Zilvian can chime on that one. Best wishes to you and your fiancee!

Exactly! We're already closer than I ever thought I could be to another person, but after fighting and beating something like this together....well, I don't know many couples that share a bond like the one we're developing.

Hi there....
My name is Megan, and my fiance, Patrick, has been updating you about my illness. I just wanted to say thank you....from the bottom of my heart. Your thoughts and prayers have helped both of us immensely. It's very touching to know that so many people we don't know have been thinking and praying for us. Kinda restores my faith in humanity :)
Thanks again!

Thank you all again for the get well wishes, as of yesterday, Megan was moved to a better hospital. The new hospital believes the last place missed the cause of infection in their surgery and will be operating again Tuesday. The doctors at the new hospital told her that this is the worst case of Sepsis they've ever seen and she might as well have stayed home until yesterday morning. I'm pretty furious at the previous institution's inadequate treatment. The new Dr.s seem much more optimistic about her treatment and they think I might be able to see her later this week. I'm very excited to see my girl and for her speedy recovery. Once again, thank you for the kind thoughts and prayers, please keep them coming as the upcoming surgery still has a fair amount of risk attached to it.

Might wanna try natural remedies... I find they often work far better than the typical approach with no side effects.
Garlic is highly effective against bacteria/virus/infection. As long as it doesn't contradict any of your medication, I recommend eating (and chewing well) many cloves of the stuff raw. This is what I do if I ever get sick (usually virus) and I'm usually better within 24 hours. Last time I did it I had a 101 degree fever, took a bunch of garlic (must be raw, fresh, and chewed well) and woke up in the morning with my bed drenched in sweat, no fever, feeling fine. I literally sweated it out.
Now, your situation does sound more serious. I would still look into natural/homeopathic remedies though... they can be very powerful. Most pharmaceutical drugs are actually derived from plant/animal sources. (they just add a bunch of poisonous shit, package it, and sell it for way too much)
Garlic can be used in place of antibiotics... but your situation seems to call for something more drastic. Please, do some internet research.
I don't know what the doctors are saying but you probably want to reintroduce good bacteria after you get better because the antibiotics kill them all. This can be done with probiotic supplements (which can be dangerous if you don't get the right ones) or more simply, bovine colostrum, or live, homemade fermented food like sauerkraut.

^Pretty ridiculous that I have to put this, but that's what this world has come to.
PM me if you want, I promise I won't recommend anything expensive. :p That's the problem with natural or homeopathic remedies - they generally can't be profited upon.

corbin definitely good advice for when shes back home but i dont think introducing probiotics in a septic patient is safe at this moment.
probiotics are generally safe when theye in the GI tract but i dont think we know enough about disease state and co-morbidities to recommend them.

I have read about Protein C online, I'm not sure if it has been considered, but it does show promise in the treatment of Sepsis. I think I'll show Megan some info on it and maybe she can run it by her Dr's.

I'm really happy she was transferred as well, along with a better plan, the Dr's seem to have a much better bedside manner. My main concern is her getting better and coming home to me...a close second is her feeling comfortable with the people treating her and not being scared. That's the hardest part, knowing that the most important person in my life is scared and all I can offer is words.

I agree. Holisitic methods saved my brother's life, but Megan's condition is better left to Dr's for now IMO. I will keep the suggestions in mind for when she's home and safe, and I appreciate the help.

She is so strong, but these past few weeks have really been weighing on her heart and mind. Any good vibes you can send her way are still very much appreciated.
