Ok.. I think my turbo is about to go. It's making a groaning noise at 3,500 and full boost, or higher rpms. Only under boost, too. So, a few people I've talked to said their turbos did that a week or so before it blew.
So, in my preventative measure, has anyone rebuilt a turbo (replace seals)? Can anyone link places they used? Finally, do I have to go to Turbonetics to get a rebuild kit?
Thanks!

I would have it sent out and have it rebult, and while its being rebult, have it upgraded with a bigger wheel.

What turbo is it? There are lots of places that sell turbo rebuild kits and rebuild turbos besides turbonetics. Theres probable one within a short distance of you if you wanted it done locally.

The turbo specialists will say: when you rebuild it, you're preesing your luck trying to line things up the way they were previously (assuming the turbo was balanced to begin with). From what I've seen: more than a few people have gone with damaged turbos. TY Yap did over 300hp with a chunk of compressor wheel missing. My compressr AND turbine housings are worn and showing signs of fatigue (edges are rough), and my turbo spins like no other (small... it has to).
IMO, yes, you can rebuild it yourself, as long as you TRY to keep the "factory" balancing in check. Just remember to use some GOOD locktite on the nut that holds the compressor onto the center shaft. BUT, don't expect it to last as long as it would if you had it professionally done.
