i've searched

do you need to take the motor out of the car?

do you need to rip the whole block apart?

if no, after taking off the heads can i start from there?

how hard is it?

Pull the engine, remove the oil pan and drop the crank, rods, pistons out the bottom. Never done it, dono how hard it is...

If you try taking out the pistons from the top you risk scoring the cyl. with the connecting rods. After you drop the crank, wrap the connecting rod in a shop towel or something else like that to prevent from messing up the cyl. surface.
