okay.....i'm sick of this. In my 1996 240, the cupholder is a complete pile of crapola. It looks as if there might be parts of it that are missing, like some tray was meant to be inset into the space which they so aggravatingly call a "cupholder" that is acutally nothing more than a cup spiller. Maybe more of you have noticed this, or maybe somebody on here can clue me in as to wheather or not theres sposed to me something else there that i'm missing? Or is the cupholder in this car just extraordinarily sh!tty?
Thanks guys

:mrmeph:
spilling coffee doesn't concern me too much, I have an endless free supply since i work at starbucks :P and i acutally usually manage to keep things from spilling.......however it makes me mad cause its a distraction while i'm trying to DRIVE my car! I cant keep using my shift hand to hold a friggin drink in place every time i heel-toe for a turn or accelerate in the slightest......arg
but anyways......so nobody has any clue? :(

starbucks employees represent!!
just take one of the disposable carrying trays and put your drink on that, and set the whole thing on the seat, counterweight it with a cup of water

i have the same problem, it's like a big box to put your drinks in, like where is the round part??? anyways, i just got in the habit of buying drinks with resealable lids so i can just throw it in the seat next to me. or small drinks, so i have room to shift.

Just buy a SOBE, and only drink it when at a stop, I do not understand trying to drink while driving.. WHY .. you are not going to die of thirst, when you come to a red light, stop sign .. take a drink from the 4... I mean SOBE, put the cap back on.
You should know better then drinking from those awful cups with lids in a 240 .. paaaasha ! However, if you must, then use your STRONG HAND

woo hoo! another Washingtonian!
I have no ideas on the cup holder thing, but hey! Be happy that you at least have one, us s13 owners have to yank out the ashtray and use the little opening that's leftover :(
edit: omar, is your new sig from Scarface?

Yoshi, can you believe I did not watch that move until about 6-9 months ago, serious.. I knew about it, heard the hype.. However, wanted to hold off, then bam, one day I watched the movie, now I watch it about once every two weeks :)

I don't think the square part is for drinks as far as I concern. It can't hold any drinks whenever you put into it, so i use it as a candy holder: candies, changes, cd player remote, etc are all in there :p
I have 2 S14 so far and i can say you didn't miss any parts, it just the design of it. If you concern about a cup holder, robert had metioned a really nice one somewhere in the forum and one guy actually made some nice quality pieces to fit in the square part as a cup holder, looks really nice. you can find them with the search mode on :D
oh, you can get a cup holder that clip on the air vent so it won't one your way to shift as well. jspec.com have great stuff that you can give it a try.
btw, finally took a pic of my S14 :P by the time finished the z32 brake (front only, don't have the extra green to do the rear :bash: but it's work just great to me :D )

I am surprised nobody has bought a cupholder from like wal-mart and attached it somehow.
I am going to get this:
http://www.ultimatecupholders.com/images/fischercupholder.gif
And just attach it to the rear ashtray, if not there I'll find a spot.
I guess I'll let you know how it goes.

Wow, I've been looking for something like that forever. I saw something like it on mkiv.com but I could never find where it was sold. I'll have to look out for this next time i'm at Walmart.
Thanks, Johann

Well it came in today (pretty quick), simple install. I guess you can put it anywhere you want.

I removed the ashtray and put it here:
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid80/pf991845cccb17e8b8c7fa9eca62350e0/fb0bd8f9.jpg
There are 4 unpunched holes on both the horizontal tray and the vertical backing. I mounted it vertically, but only used the top two screw holes cuz I was too lazy to remove the bottom tray (cuz thats the only way to reach those holes).
Its sturdy enough, but sits at a little bit of an angle cuz the console isnt straight up and down.

If the drink spills it'll stay in the bottom tray so no worries about spilling on the carpet, and cleaning it is easy, just have to remove the actual cup holder part, pops out in 3 places.
I havent had a drink in there yet but I doubt it wll interfere, I have long arms but my elbow can't reach that far if my hand is on the shifter.

Ya I was considering doing something similar to my car, but then I saw pricing and said its a waste for something in a bad location.
Mine cost like 17 including shipping, and about 10 minutes.

Yeah if I had seen your's I would have went that route too :) it's functional and looks fine where it's at.
On the flip side I got to play with fiberglass finally which is something i've wanted to do for a long time.
:bigok: to you for being innovative and efficient.

The only bad side to it that I am just finding out is that you can't really open your armrest all the way. If you force it you can, but with no effort it won't hold itself. It might be able to be fixed if I cut the top bit (just above the screws) off, and allow the armrest to pivot. Or if I redrill the holes, I might be able to push it further down, or maybe for those who will buy it, you can cut the carpet out, that'll give you enough space for the armrest to fully open.
And to fix the bit of the angle I think I am going to use the spacer I didn't use, should straighten it out a bit. But for now It works great.
Also the funny little tab thats on the inside serves as a universal sized holder, so thats the smallest it gets, but can take anything b/w that and if the tab bends, the springs are strong enough to hold drinks too.
Now just to make some trips to speedway to test its ability to hold drinks.

hahaha silly girls, the square holes are not cupholders. 240s dont have cupholdahs weaksauce.
Anyway, i got the nifty JDM TYTE ones tat clip onto the center vents. Both it and my bubbly shiftknob glow under blacklight. Guess i have to get that next. Woo hoo ricerboi!:coolugh:

I never really liked the vent cupholders, if it spills, it goes all over my center console and cd player  , plus I like the fact that I have A/C and heat, I would like to use it to its full extent. But I guess they do thier job.
