i detonated on my current motor and the liners on the cylinders are f'd. i got another sr20 block that has no main caps. is it possible to use my main caps from my old motor on the other block? what do i need to look for when fitting them on??

yes but you'll need to get them line bored/honed.

They are transferable if you torque them down and get them line honed. Normally they stay on the same motor, in the same order and direction

^ What they said. You would need to get it line honed, or even bored.

thanks for the fast responses, i appreciate it. ill even measure them before i line hone/bore them. i want to make sure all is done precisely
what is the worst that i can come across when doing this? ive never transfered over main caps before

spun bearings is one of a few problems

Just make sure that the caps fit tightly. The outside of the caps closest to where they contact the block should be the widest and have a slight interference fit with the block. If they are loose you will be in trouble, but a good machine shop will pick up on that and let you know. Sometimes you can center punch near those areas to tighten it up though.
Like all of the guys before me said, a good line bore and hone should do the trick. Make sure you find a good shop to do it.

Machine the flat surface of the caps where they meet the block, and the block surfaces where it meets the caps.
Torque the caps.
Then have it line honed.
Then everything will be fine.

i cant quite picture what youre talking about when you say the outside of the caps closest to the where they contact the block.

NO.
With that said, yes, but take the block to a machine shop first and have it inspected and machined properly.
Also, do not mix the locations either.

Sr main caps are numbered from the factory, and have directional arrows. It's not hard to figure out where they go.
All I was saying is that they should fit tightly in place in the block, as in no lateral movement possible even without the bolts in.
That being said, an align hone will consist of the bottoms of the caps being machined then bolted into place and the block/caps being bored and honed to the proper spec. The mating surfaces on the block will not be machined, it would be downright difficult and unnecessary.

definitly make sure someone with the proper machining equipment and knowledge does it...dont want to ruin another block and be $h!t out of luck. when i had my one block line honed/bored, it only cost about 200...not a bad price to know that everything is in spec and ready go. good luck with it all man
