Well, me and my parents have been having this arguement for months now. They want me to look for an AWD car, like a WRX which I can't afford so I would have to settle for the slow 2.5rs.
I am well aware that RWD is more difficult to drive in the snow but I do not see it being impossible to drive with some studded tires and weight in the trunk. I just drove home from work today in 4 inches of snow and I didn't use 4wd just for fun. A truck has less weight on the rear wheels and I don't have snow tires I have all seasons. I work at a ski resort and it's a pretty rough trip and I made it fine. I figure a car would go as good or better in the snow as long as its not dragging but once again I am no pro. All the RW traction used for accel and the FW used for cornering. It seems more efficient to me other than the weight being more over the front wheels.
If you guys HAD to get around in the winter, could you get it done? If I have to use the truck for a few days here and there that's fine, but if they can't get around at all then I may have to settle for a slow ass car.

I've been through 3 winters with coilovers, a welded diff, and all season tires. Never got in an accident and only gotten stuck twice (not going off the road, I got snowed in).

I drive my 240 in the snow, it sucks. I have all season tires and the car doesn't have much traction. If I were to switch them out to studded tires when it snows it would be fine. I could throw some weight in my trunk, but the exhaust would be on the ground.
I would love to have a Subaru for winter.

I live in northern Colorado, It has been snowing for about a week straight, roads completely covered and icy and I can still take my car out for a quick drive no problem :) even without studded snow tires, just straight gangster stretch and -5* camber. It's just about being smart and watching further ahead. Drive slow homie!

Been daily driving in Canadian winters for 3 years with the 240. If you get any real accumulation where you live, DEFINATLY have snow tires. I love it, but you have to know how to drive rwd in the snow, it does take practice.

Obviously if it's lowered the amount of snow you can plow though will be less, but snow tires are the key.
BTW I drove it out of there the next day with another 3 inches or so of snow on top of what's already there.

240? snow? in PA? You are nuts to even consider it. It would be fun to take it out every once and a while to goof off but daily driving just seems stupid and dangerous. Last year during our February snow when everyone was stuck and leaving there cars stranded I was putzing right along in my AWD and loving it. Get the AWD from the daily, save and build a 240 for play.

ive driven my s13 in the snow on all seasons for 2 years now. and i drove a z32 the other 2 years ive driven. i don't think ive ever actually driven a fwd or awd car in snow aside of at work... i don't have a problem at all. just takes a little longer to get to places. ive never used snow tires but i have been told by multiple people its a night and day difference.

Whats wrong with the 2.5rs? if you really wanted to you can do a motor swap on it to turbo it(kinda pricey sometimes) but yeah 2.5rs is the best looking subaru ever...
As for 240 in the snow, my car does awesome in the snow just gotta know how to drive, i have a VLSD, Coilovers, 17x9, 225/45/17's and i do just fine... but i dont get a foot of snow lol we get about 8inches max here(rare)

My 1995 S14 with 5 spd and VLSD was my first car @ 17 years old and my first stick shift car. I daily drove it through 2 x Chicago winters. Had all season tires and stock suspension. If your a good driver and be careful you will be able to drive it. Tires and driver make the car.

Ive deffinetly wintered in my 240 a couple of times here in the detroit area. like everybody else has said it takes practice and good tires. never had snow tires personaly. but knowing how the car acts is key too.
I only got my car stuck twice the last winter i drove it (have a 93 f150 for winter duty now) that was on all seasons, coilovers, and a 2-way. once becuase i got into deep hard slush trying to pass somebody going waaayyy to slow. and once on the side of the road in my nieghborhood while having some fun practicing.
And as for mountains i took my 240 to nc to visit a friend. kentucky had just got a fresh couple of inches as i was driving through on I-77. i white knuckled all the way through doing 70 with the truckers. the best advice i can give is dont go faster than whats comfortable.
it can be done.
up hills are hard.
it WORKS but not well, would not suggest it for a sub par driver.
kinda like light weight drift practice

Why do you have to have a wrx... A pick up truck that is cheap and 4x4 is perfectly fine.. my uncle got a 4x4 ford ranger for 900 bucks and runs good and 4x4 gets us around when ever we need to borrow the truck for when it snows heavily..

i drove mt pignose 2 winters in a row before i repainted. it was slammes on the steelies with fatty tires lol. i plowed snoweverywhere but i got around. as long as you look ahead and prepare, brake, lose control, slide, get traction again and get luccky enough to hit all green lights, your be ok. freezing rain....just go back in your house. 240s are fun if your willing to be twice as careful as everyone else. im also in nebraska where you could have 60 degree weather then 2ft of snow the next day.

i have low tread on bfg gforce super sports in the rear and some winter tires on the front. pretty much been messin around the entire time in parking lots during the day and the roads at night (its kinda nice bein on vacation :P) s14 is stock.
If you have the option of driving something else during the winter, i would highly recommend doing so. you can get stuck very easily. especially in parking lots lol. The Subaru must be awesome in the snow... you should keep that and just buy a 240 too. you can find one pretty cheap.

I live in Kamloops bc and drive mine all winter it makes 350whp on 16psi with a welded diff and coils .I used to live even further north. Good winter tires are key aswell as a good diff vlsd or 1.5 would be great welded might make some people nervous. My lip is about 3.5 inchs from the ground and aslong as you keep momentum your fine. I take mine over the mtn passes and the coquihalla highway aswell as ski resorts and never have any issues.

Kus I love cars, Don't have the money to insure two vehicles, and I also don't really have the money for a WRX. I've found a few but I would just rather have a 240. Everyone in my town is getting Subaru's and they all go on and on about how it's the best car in the world, I'd love to blow by them in my RB25 240 :fawk: It's been my dream car since I was like twelve.
Granted Subaru's are great cars, the 240's are rare around here and I would like to have something different. Plus I can make it go faster for cheaper, put more power through the RB block without getting into internals, and handle better.

I don't believe this. After what both my friends went threw on there wrx's(one is an 02, the other is an 05) I would never buy a Subaru.
Look into another awd. Some will be a lot cheaper then the price tag of a subaru.
I don't drive in the winter with mine. My tires are not snow tires. I got stuck in my plowed yard moving my car. I had to have my dad push me out. I do take it out a couple times. just to drive for like an hour in town.

Just drive the 240 and be extra cautious thats all there is to it and if you can afford some winter tires buy them it will definitely help. My friend bought a stick 350z beginning of the winter and had to learn to drive manual in the winter did it with no problem just know how to handle the car your drive

i broke down this year and got some studded snows for the rear of my 240. it's not too bad, but will still spin out on command. i will say that it's WAY better than when i tried moving it with the 18's on it. lol
when the snow first hit, i couldn't even get my supra up the driveway and into the garage. that was with good all seasons and only a dusting of snow. needless to say, that car is currently buried in the garage.

it appears to be a subaru designer, you need to look at the sexiest cars around and do the opposite. subarus have always been butt ugly cars, interior and all.

slow down andretti, you're 19.. you may have been beating off about this since you were a youngster, but truth of the matter is you probably have a long way to go before swapping in a motor of that capacity. otherwise, you'll just own another shitty paperweight like most of the other 240 owners here.
bottom line, if you cant afford a spare car then you sure as hell shouldnt be building a custom car with non-standard motor, etc.
question, how come the douchebags with coilovers and welded diffs never talk about raising their coilovers since clearance is an obvious matter of concern when driving in the snow. i love how people think the 240 is a multi-purpose vehicle, snow-plow and all.

The last couple winters in Tahoe i drove my GLI around on all seasons and never had an issue. Now in Idaho i'm driving my kouki and with all seasons it was brutal.
I now have studded hancook snow tires. it manages much better, but like others mention RWD in snow takes getting used to. its definelty not as predictable.
driving up to the ski resort sucks. If i go much below 15mph i risk not being able to get moving again. And if its some wet pow with ice underneath i just mob through the parking lot in reverse
Honestly man, i would prefer NOT to drive my 240 in the snow. Sure it gets the job done and I don't feel like I'm gonna die or anything but I wouldn't let my wife drive it around.
i'd snag a 2.5rs in a heartbeat! i love the boxer 4 sound. Even something like a 97-99 GSX would be sweet.

Meh, I need to get a car and it's either going to be a complete shitpile or the car I want. There is no point in me wasting 6-7k on a car I don't like when I could just spend another 2-3k and have something I can build over the next 10 years. I don't have any payments other than the car and my insurance and I make like 15-20 bucks an hour at my job depending on my tips.

Snow tires truly are night and day. I have been rocking them on my beater Camry for six winters now and I will never go back to all seasons. Studded tires, though, are illegal in most states, so you might want to look into that- I know they are illegal in Michigan, along with chains.
As for the 240, I don't drive it in the snow and salt because I don't want it to rust into a pile of garbage. But plenty of people drive RWD cars in the winter without major issues. Like previously stated, it is all about the tires and the driver being SMART.

I drive my kouki in the snow every year. Snow tires are a must, but its really no big deal if you have them. Youre fucked if you dont, but to say that the 240 cant do snow is ridiculous. Thats like saying you cant drive a convertible in the rain. Uh, yeah you can, you just gotta put the top up. If you prepare your car for winter and set it up expecting snow, youll be fine. My 240 tanks through snow like its its job. As long as the front bumper is clearing, Im on the roads. Last year I was the ONLY 2wd car (much less RWD) on the roads during one blizzard. Snow tires are seriously seriously underestimated.
I love when people pick up a 2nd car (awd) for the 5-6 days out of the year where you need it. Yeah, you spend $3000 on that subaru. Ill spend $300 on snow tires and put the remaining $2700 in my pocket, thank you very much.

snow tires make a MASSIVE difference. driving my old s13 with regular A/S tires vs. my friends s13 with snow tires, both bone stock at the time, made me a believer. it's doable without the tires, but driving sideways down hills and getting stuck on the way up is something i'd rather avoid in the future, if possible.

I drove my s14 with coils, welded diff and tons of camber on all season 16s in the snow and I nearly s*** myself. My car would get loose while going about 15mph for absolutely no reason. Straight line, maintaining throttle and I'd loose traction. The only other time ive driven in snow was a 4x4 rental so maybe someone with more experience will have better results but I was not a fan. Atleast not with the welded, camber ect.

My s14 has lasted through the past few major snowstorms with no problem. I have some generic All-season Kuhmo AST's on 17x7 SE-R wheels. I puttered through 3-4in snow no problem. Only time it got dicey is when i had to get onto my street. it's on a slight up hill, and i have to make a sharp right onto it, so i cant carry a lot of speed. Ive gotten stuck a few times, and making a LOUD racket inching my way up the hill (open diff for now).
I recently picked up a VLSD and its chillaxing in the trunk with a 50# bag of sand, and my spare tire. I figure thats an easy 150-200lb of weight. Makes travel much easier, and traction is pretty easy to come by, as long as im easy on the clutch (11lb fidanza + Southbend stage 3)

I've driven my 240 through winter conditions, all without snow tires. It's not hard, it's definitely doable. I wouldn't do it again though. I do say tires and ride height play a key factor in driving a car through heavy winter conditions. Can't do shit if your car's a snowplow.

Listen to your parents, DON'T DO IT.
I have driven a MK3 supra over the winter here in Misawa, a S13, and my personal favorite my 94 WRX. Didn't have a problem with any of them, though all of them ran some snow tires.

you're 19 and thinking about 10 years from now? only idiots like me keep/build a 240 for that long. do yourself a favor and buy yourself something dull and reliable. the last thing you need is a piece of shit ancient 240 thats always breaking down. these cars are seriously antiquated and the only people who like them (or claim to like them) are the fanboys on this forum who think their first car is an ultimate FR race car.
save your money and one day buy a Z33 or Z34, at least it will have modern amenities and be plenty powerful. by then, you'll most likely be married/engaged and possibly with kids, which means you'll have to put yer shit up for sale to please the wife. everyone here thinks they're badassed until the wife bitchslaps them with reality.. then they're false dreams of being a race car driver evaporate.
ps: if youre going to spend money on a winter car, let it be cheap.. 2-3k tops

im 22 with a baby on the way and the wife doesnt want me to get rid of my 240 cuz she likes to ride in it with me. But i do have a 92 f-150 a 2010 wrx and she has a 03 elantra so its not like we rely on the 240 ever for anything more than just a fun car.

I lived in northern Japan for 6 years. I think the average snowfall was around 130" annuually. I owned two S-14's and an FD while there. Just take your time and dont get in a rush and you'll be fine. Snow driving is fun for this guy, you just have to learn to respect it

its probably already been said but this is all that counts.
Snow Tires are a MUST.
i just had 2 Blizzak WS70 185/60/15 on 7-spoke stockers for the rear
it is astounding as to how much better the car is in the snow. the northeast got another foot or so of snow and my car's doing fine.

he was the rapist type and drove an all-trac celica, he used to make fun of antiquated RWD cars and one day he tookoff with this girl. luckily my other friend was chasing him down in his AE86... IN SNOW. believe it or not, the AE86 caught up with him and the all-trac corolla lost control and crashed.
if it wasnt for my friend and his skills driving in the snow, that girl would've been history. true story, this happened in japan.

^ Super epic story bro. Maybe needs a re-enactment/movie??
I don't drive my car in fluffy snow but i have had to drive it on some densely snow packed roads before to pick up the gf and i have to say it was a huge bitch even with brand new tires. It wasnt out of control or anything, just super slow moving due to no traction.
They were summer tires, but still.
I believe having lsd would have made all the difference though.

I've been driving my 93 in most of the winters since new in Canada.
Its a given winter tires are a must. Adding some weight in the back helps too. An important thing to do is to go out early in the season and find some empty parking lot and learn or re-learn the limits of car in snow. Its good to refresh your skills after months of no snow.
Also give yourself enough space for braking. That's something you have to adjust your driving to.
Check your battery and tire pressure too. You use a lot of battery power with wipers, lights, heater, ABS usage, etc. than you would in the summer and low temp means low tire pressure.
The vast majority of accidents happen on the first and last days of winter. On the first day because drivers haven't become accustomed to winter yet and on the last storm because people have let down their guard. Be extra careful on those days.
The area i find are a pain with the 240 compared to other cars is Ground Clearance. When you need to go somewhere and a snow plow freshly plants a pile of snow in front of the parking lot entrance that's as high as your bumper you can't go through. And i'm on stock height.

i got stuck yesterday because i was run off the plowed part of the road by a civic sliding sideways.
luckily i had a folding shovel in the trunk and i was out in ten minutes, and on my merry way.
Just start out in third gear and you're golden.
I saw a guy in a civic understeer into three different curbs on the way home from work, haha.

if you want awd get quattro or gtfo. I do like subarus tho and rwd can take it these 240s prove its possible just be mindful of it and smart in the snow and its no big deal

I had a 240 with balding winters for an Edmonton (Canadian) winter, granted stock ride height, but it really wasn't that bad, instead of understeer you get oversteer. Just know that and you'll be fine, don't drive as quick as you would, brake early and lightly. My brother has a 2.5RS, and it is great in the winter, but AWD doesn't help you braking, or if all 4 wheels are on ice. It's your call though

LOL @ all the people who are getting fucked with snow this year for the first real time.
Tires Tires Tires.
Blizzacks or some other snow tire and drive like a grown up and you'll be fine.
Snow tires are so much fun....
Don't really have a use for them out here in SoCali much anymore though lol

I tried driving mine in winter and it was awful. I got stuck on a level surface with residual snow cover on it. I kept trying to drive it all winter but would continuously get stuck going up 5 degree inclines, it is beyond frustrating. Just picked up a jeep xj 4x4 this winter for cheap so that is what I now drive and save the 240 for clear streets.
wow... we get a LOT of snow here, and i daily my R32 no problem... last year was my cressida, before was my silvia.. as others said... Winter tires

did it for three, maybe four winters, without much issue. it only snows maybe a half dozen times or less here in the winter, though. one time i did have to get a group of children to push my car up a hill. get winter tires, even just a pair on the back, and you'll be much better off

That's a really sweet story man, only one problem, I-77 doesn't go through Kentucky. Just giving you a hard time about that statement. haha
OP- my winter beater is a FC RX7 on regular road tires, and while its gotten harder to do lately because of the lack of state money to clear the roads, it still gets me where I need to go. But I agree with what was said earlier about picking up a truck for <$1000. You have to remember, while it might be possible to drive a 240 in the snow, if you have any sort of piggy lip, SE lip, or aero on it all it will take is one of those huge chunks of snow from someones wheel wells falling off in front of you to destroy it. They can do some serious damage to a FMIC as well. So its a choice you have to make.

I've driven 240's in the snow for 5 years and trust me awd is better, honestly I just got my 03 wrx for 8k. Over a 4 years loan I pay 325 with full coverage insurance. That's nothing man. Mean while my rhd car gets to sit during the winter time. Plus my project car is no longer my daily which I'm soooo happy about. Get a wrx man you won't regret it

I drove my 240's in the snow for 4 years of college in Blacksburg. Consistent snow but never anything overly deep. It takes a bit of concentration, but is totally manageable. I was on stock sized all seasons with an LSD. Just drop the tire pressure to 30psi or so and roll out.
Later I got an old audi quattro for $450, and lets just say that AWD almost makes driving in the snow too easy.

I've been driving my s13 in the snow for 6 winters now. Its the most fun I have all year, although large hills are tough, you gotta get a good head start on them. I've got about 300 pounds of sandbags in the hatch+snow tires. Its an arctic beast. I just need a winch and a plow on it now.

I don't drive my 240 in the snow, or after the first time they salt the roads here in chicago and it's going to stay that way. I would suggest to have some patience and if you save enough you can buy a 240 and then a point A-B car for the winter.

i have a 98 2.5RS and driving in the snow with AWD is so easy. You can drive in the snow with a 240 whether it's slammed or raised with snow tires or summer tires, but it won't be easy. If you're gonna be driving in the snow a lot then why not get a vehicle that can handle the snow with ease? it will make driving in the snow more enjoyable. i guarantee it.

It is a Base (open)
point being they both suck but 350 not as bad. My Zenki SE S14 just outright blows in the snow. My Z has 275's in the rear so i'll attribute what little traction i have to that.

My Z is fucking amazing the snow.
More tire IS BAD for snow traction.
My snows are 225 and 245, while the summers are 245 and 285.
If you own a Z stop being a broke ass and get snow tires.
anyone know of a snow car cover?

Odd, with my weak ass Kuhmo AST all seasons and 215/45 on 17x7 SE-R wheels...and about 140lb in the trunk i get around fine. As long as i have momentum. The grippy clutch and lightweight flywheel makes things a little trickier moving from a stop, but i manage.
One thing thats pretty deadly is the unknown sheets of black ice. I was coming around a familiar corner near my house and i saw a altima nose first in a snow bank on the outer edge of the corner. As i contemplated what landed them there, the rear end of my car started coming out to the right(it was a left handed, 30mph corner) due to the assload of freezing rain that NJ has been getting. I managed to: 1. not hit the brakes 2. feathered the throttle and counter steered 3. avoid hitting the car. I eventually cleared the car by a few feet, and the rear kicked to the left (weight shift + open diff) and i finally spun in place (i held the brake right after the fishtail so i wouldnt slide more) It all seemed to happen in slow motion, but im glad i didnt freak out or anything. Time to do some more parking lot shenanigans! :)

I'm thinking about driving my 240 in the snow. I'm kitted on coilovesr. This will be my second year of snow and first in this 240sx.
Will the snow more then likely fuck up my Origin Lab Kit? Also would it be worth it to buy two snow tires for the rear? I can't afford a full set at the moment.
lower tyre psi, welded diff and heightened ride height should be fine in moderate conditions

As long as you know how to drive you'll be fine. I drove mine lowered with LSD and some crappy winter tires and had zero problems and Edmonton winters are pretty terrible. And fresh snow hooning is the most fun I've had in ages.
