View Full Version : s13 harness tuck...

So, i know this is an old question and yes - i tucked it into the fender like 90% of people do. Fuck that, it looks like shit and i'll probably rub into it when i start getting into bigger tires up front.
I've decided to route into the engine bay, but a question or few arises
1. Will i have to cut anything? I have heard mix answers, some people say it's long enough to pull through the firewall, others say it needs to be extended (driver side)
2. Where exactly do i pull it through the firewall? Does it go through the smaller triangular spot that's near the clutch reservoir or some other spot i don't know of?
3. there is this massive white box that has 1 bolt going through the middle of it, i don't think its the SMJ but it might be - how do i get it off? The damn bolt seems to not do anything, as if the threads stripped inside and it spins forever but won't come out - only go in.
I know this is an old question - and there are plenty of threads out there. But all the fucking pictures are gone and all the threads are from 2004 or earlier. That shit doesn't help, its 2011 now and the pictures are gone.

I've never done it without cutting, but I'm like a good surgeon, I love to cut shit out.

The problem with that triangular spot is that you then have to come down and go through the same grommet it used to go through, and right there where the loom comes out of the grommet is where I rubbed on my car (but I ran large front tires on 18x10 +0's).
There aren't a whole lot of great places to run the wires down the driver's side because that's the hot side (meaning exhaust side) and there are pedals right behind the firewall so you'd have to be pretty careful if you made a new hole.

Yeah that's the SMJ, its pretty much the devil. The threads probably aren't stripped, you just have to split the two half-shells apart as you turn the bolt.

So no possible way without cutting? Fuuuuu
And the driver side area won't work very well?? FFUUU... i mean i don't plan on running anything over 17x10, at the very most, on my fronts any time soon so idk. But its still a thought to consider
The smj, when i split it where do i go from? I haven't really looked at it much and since i only have a small flashlight its difficult to see but i got 2 screws that bolt to the body and loosened the middle. Is there anything else before i start pulling and end up breaking something?

I don't know how you have yours tucked in the first place, but mine is tucked up above the fender ziptied to that lil lip and I have no rubbing issues even though I run a 215/45/17 tire.. For example, I rub my fender tub before I rub my harness, all I had to do was take the plastic shielding off the harness and voila! it fit right up in there with no problems.

Yeah i have that done, i mean it does the job cause i'm running 195/40/17 up front ATM but i wanna go a tad bit lower, stance isn't where i want it, and i also don't really like having it pushed up like that. Personal preference
I mean i don't have to reroute it - but i would like to just so i don't have to worry about it in the future.
Also - has anyone ever bought a longer hood-release cable? I tucked it with the fender, it still works but its really tight... I just wanna get something longer so its more easy to pull, or should i just get over it?

3 more questions came up today... one is regarding the gauge cluster (decided to take it off and fix all the bulbs that are burned) and the other is regarding the switches (particularly the rear defogger switch.)
1. What are these bulb sockets for/why doesn't my car have them?
One has japanese writing on it, the other is blank. On the face-side there is nothing on either location - just blank space (And a small bulb by #2)

2. On the rear defogger/froster switch, which is the "interior lamp" slot for the bulb and which is the "enabled" slot for the bulb. I took it apart and accidentally forgot to mark them. I know one is blue and one is brown - i just don't know where they go.
3. I took apart the switch for the defogger button, like removed the cover to see inside (bad idea) so i could push the blue bulb out since it was stuck. I noticed some of the other switches don't have the bulbs on the outside - can i take them apart and replace the bulb or should i just not try? I got the defogger switch back together with some trial/error but i might have lost a piece - have to keep looking around.
Sorry for being so extensive lol

Could have done it with the plastic sheilding on I bet.

If by this you mean looser and less resistance, I don't see how a longer one would make it easier to pull. Maybe easier to reach though.

I think what you have circled is just the slots for the bulbs. what buttons are you talking about?

oh shit... i didn't mean buttons lol yeah i mean't bulb sockets. What slots/purpose do they serve on other models?
And the only reason i think a longer hood release cable would make it easier is because my is stretched/really tight since i tucked it into the fender with my harness. In the engine bay, it comes out by the air filter instead of tucking under the radiator support, it should have some slack. A longer one would allow me to leave it tucked there and still have slack in the line so it doesn't rub against anything when i pull.
Pictures would probably help on this one

that bolt holds down the top of the wiring harness main connector. here is a diagram for you
fuse box stays mounted in car here-> | |- bolt on the part you pull out. the bolt stays

lol if that doesnt help ill get you real pics. if you havent already take your steering wheel off and the column trim off its way easier to work down there and if thats not enough take your seat out. lol

yeah i kinda got pissed and grasped the thing and yanked really hard, then shat myself when i thought i broke the bolt since it stayed inside the main thing. i got it off though
i also took off the gauge cluster, as you can see, and dropped the steering column.
Decided i might as well since im already there lol
