I know that one of the blacktop's for the s14's sr20 comes with some kind of variable valve timing. Is there a way to know which one you have? Besides a power difference.

You will have a round bulge on the front of the valve cover

Is this what gives it the lower sound from the s13 engine?

The S14 shouldn't sound any different than the S13 engine. Maybe there is some slight difference due to the intake being a low port versus the S13's high port. Usually head and exhaust manifold designs play the major role in the sound of an engine.

May just be me, but s14's sound deeper. I don't know. Is it worth looking for one with Variable valve timing?

If you're willing to pay the extra cash for and s14 rather than an s13 sr than go for it.
VVT, T28 = more power
No difference in sounds from the s13 to s14. exact same motor, just different components used.

Is it similar to Honda's Vtech? as in Engaging at a certain RPM or does it depend on throttle position?

its not as complex as vtec, and honestly not even worth thinking about much. the only real benefit to getting a motor with it on it is that the s14 motors are newer and possibly in better condition. If you have a s14 get that motor so the swap will be easier, since it came from the same chassis.

Yeah honestly the variable valve timing isn't really a whole lot to brag about. The advantage of the s14 would be the t28 turbo. and also like nismoman said it would be an easier swap. But the s13 sr is cheaper and if you wanted more power you could always replace the t25 with a gt2871 or something comparable. and hell, if you were really that dead set on the vvt than you could always just buy aftermarket cams that allow you to fine tune the timing but in my opinion it's kinda over doing it.

Its vct ( variable cam timing) advance and retard intake timing for s14. Only the fwd(sr20vet and neo sr20ve) has variable lift, duration and timing.

The VCT on the S14 Sr was designed to provide more lowend torque. It switches off at 5400rpms and is a great option to keep around. I made 360rwhp and 315rwtrq on 13psi with a 3071r and other supporting mods. The S13 SR wouldn't have broken into the 300's for trq but may have had a bit more peak power. I had a wide/flat useable powerband from 4k to 7.5k. I believe the factory S14 Sr has a better power band than the factory S13 Sr, although it only produces 20 peak hp more than the S13 Sr.
