Alright, i recently put a new headgasket in my car(overheated it like every other sr20) but i got the head re-surfaced and checked for cracks... did everything step-by-step

weird part of my car was that my crank pully was marked 2nd notch from the right(FSM shows 2nd from left)... i went with that mark first and alligned everything up and it wouldnt start. Figured i better use the FSM markings and got it all back together.. NO start, check coilpacks/plugs ext and nothing... checked compression and the back one was like 40*(i checked the piston walls for any damage and saw nothing when it was apart)

but now when i took off my valve cover again i noticed the silver links are 1 link off of lining up. maybe i didnt spin it around enough... or did i skip a link and really fuck it up?

any help would be great, my knowledge is pretty high on the matter but i'm stumped and dont want to rip it apart

alright, sorry to double post.... but i just turned over the car(manually w/ the crank) and found links that line up with the 2 cam marks and the crank is at FSM's TDC... cant really check the compression again until the morning though. wtf could be my issue?

So is timing set or no? You're not going to get a 'reliable' compression reading on a fresh engine if you re ringed it.

To hell with those colored links. I just set it to TDC and count the links. 20 'barrels' between each line up mark.

if yo uneed help

Those links make it fool proof. by matching it up you don't have to "count" both cams into submission. Just line the links up and you're guaranteed to be dead on. Those links and markings are there for a reason.

While true, if you have an engine that did not have the chain and the crank lined up from the start, it really would make it hard to verify. I'm unsure if it will eventually line up correctly if installed wrong from the start (Iwould assume so, but it may take quite a few turns)
