save your money and buy a good one.
i've ran a Passport escort 8500 for a few years it works wonders. i've considered upgrading to the escort 9500 (it has intersection cameras and a few other pretty neat features.
and as always the Valentine 1 is a GREAT unit. all can be had pretty cheap used.

Valentine V1 is old compared to the new passports. Ive heard nothing but good things about Passports which is what I will be getting next.

i guess he is asking everybody who has one this question....so why dont we just do the speed limit guys? then we wont need one...come on man really...you do the EXACT speed limit everywhere you go?? its not like im out runnin 110+ everywhere i go...i was on my way home from nashville a few months ago..at 3 in the morning just me and a few semis on the road..i got a ticket for doing 72 in a 65 on the highway. i just got picked out cause it was pretty much just me on the interstate..i guess he was just bored..anyways i asked for opinions of PEOPLE WHO HAD THEM, IF THEY LIKED THEM OR NOT. to give me ideas on what to buy

idk about you, but the highway's out here are 65. its ok and no big deal to do 72-73 which i usually do. but every so often if im in a hurry i'll do closer to 80, which isnt that much over but cops stop people out here for going that speed, and i'd rather not have a ticket.

the "honda people" thing is completely retarded. but beyond that, when you commute, you're telling me everyone else on the road is doing the speed limit? 10 over is pretty much the norm on highways around here, maybe 5 over on most other roads.

My old V1 worked well for me.
Well, sometimes a bit more false alarms than I'd like, but it's paid for itself over the years.
About the speed-limit, pretty much most ppl out here in CA do 10mph above.
When I do the limit to save gas, most ppl pass me.
I'll always do 10 above the limit until cops start giving out tickets for it.
I use radars b/c often I do closer to 80, when it's safe of course.
I disagree that driving fast alone, within reason, is dangerous.
BTW - was wondering whether those smart-phone/gps apps that detected speed traps worked?
Does anyone have experience with them, and how do you like it?

i never felt the need for a radar detector..
Could it perhaps help us socal guys to avoid cops in fear of ref tickets?

there is that too, you're right.
also you don't necessarily have to be speeding to get pulled over.
the radar just reminds you to drive more cautiously that otherwise, under given situations.
no harm in that imo

My girlfriend has/had the "Trapster" App on her Blackberry. it's pretty neat. it shows where known cop speed traps are, and where there are speed cameras and intersection cameras, but from what i remember they eat battery life. but still pretty handy.

^^^^ Nooby a REF ticket is what you will get if you have an SR/RB (illegal) motor that does not pass emissions and you happen to get a jack ass officer that ask you to pop your hood. I see your in TN so they probably arent as strict on emissions as they are here in Cali

lol hellllll no they arent as strict here...i have to do emissions but if your car isnt throwing a code and your gas cap is good...you pass. oh yeah they also check for a cat. but thats it...no hood popping, exhaust sniffers or any of that crap. the county i was raised in and where my parents still live (next county over from me) they dont even do emissions there. but thanks for explaining that to me..
p.s. didnt win that whistler radar detector, oh well back to ebay!

yes, I try to do the speed limit...but like everyone else....it's usually 10mph above...but regardless....i'm always spotted out of the group of cars....so yes, I try and do the speed limit if I can.
I'm 26 years old....I'm never late to anything...i'm more worried about cops giving me some fixit ticket than a speeding ticket. but then again....how many of you guys are driving a car 1.5 inches from the ground?
speeding is over rated....getting a ticket isn't even cool, and I can't afford to keep paying for fixit tickets and other bs tickets.....
must be the over 25 thing.....

im with fckillerbee.
Although i would love to waste my money on a radar detector, i guarantee it will make me feel "above the law" or "invincible" and i'll just speed like a douche bag. I'm glad i don't have it, it'll just give me a reason to speed. Running late? So be it, rather be late than pay for tickets + insurance. I prefer cruising at speed limit too, gives me time to dodge pot holes:fruit:

ive never owned a radar detector and i never will. and im not going to try to dissuade you from purchasing one. but i am going to give you some advice. being constantly aware of your surroundings will most definitely keep you from getting tickets, as well as improve overall safety. are you familiar with the head lights and tail lights of crown victoria's and chevy malibu's? can you spot them from __ far away? thats always a good 'skill' to have. to define 'being constantly aware' i mean to always know what cars are around you, 360 degrees.
-also, this is a difficult to do but try to stay out of the 'fast lane,' thats the place police will look for speeders first.
-i suggest you get a wink mirror, which almost gives you a complete 180 degree view

(not my picture) theyre only $20, and they will improve safety as well
-etc etc

wink mirrors don't dim. sounds awesome for driving at night, or away from a sunset, or any other time where there's light you might not want hitting your eyes from five non-dimming mirrors.
i'll never understand this stereotype of people who own radar detectors relying entirely on the radar detector for guidance. it's not driving the car. i am. it's a tool on the dashboard that keeps you MORE informed than people who don't have them.
at the end of the day, you can't see, hear, or sense radar guns, but i can spot an Impala's headlights a mile away, and have a little box confirming that yes, it IS a cop.

Ofcourse you can see the cars if there out in the open.. There cars do hide around bends that you really can not see. Where i live they hide behind those freeway type barriers and you dont notice them until last second. I spent around 380 dallors on a radar detector. It has saved me lots of money.
Here on the I5 cops take the speed limit as serious as a murder. Im not saying i speed all the time but i do travel the safe speed witch is traveling the same speed as traffic. driving the cars we do catches attention more so you need to be going the right speed when they see you.
All in all the money you spend on them pays for it self quickly.

I love how everyone here acts like they do 5 under on long road trips. Keeping up with traffic here alone is at least 5 to 10 over (Interstate).

I know right? People think that because u have or are getting a radar detector is your license to speed...come on people. I guess its better u guys don't have one than to be out there with your license to speed causing wrecks. Again...I asked for opinions from PEOPLE WHO HAD THEM...to give me ideas on which to buy. Also whoever posted the stealth mode radar in the rearview....that's friggin awesome.

passport or V1.. nothing less. Used to have a whistler.. got a passport 8500 3x better. I use mine on my long road trips.. since I-95 is under perpetual construction in georgia. (seriously. it's been under construction lane widening for 15 years) and it's double fine in construction.. that and south carolina.. I swear the cops get up in tree stands.... dressed in camo and shit.. revenue raising SOB's...

Oh yeah, Valentine's patent on the dual antenna system will expire Feb. 25th 2011. A bunch of the other company's have prototypes using it in development to come out when the patent expires. There will be no reason to use a 15yr old radar detector cause it has cool arrows anymore.

I usually drive the speed limit due to fuel economy reasons, since 80mph is almost 4k RPM on the stock drivetrain :-/ Makes me sometimes wish I got the J30 diff instead. I've always wanted a V1 though, just not crazy about shelling out ±$350 for one.
