I've been quoted 250-270 dollars by one place near me, but that doesn't really sound right... They charge 60 dollars an hour. Is it really going to take 4.5 hours to put a clutch in?

It'll probably take a while. My understanding is that they have to pull the engine to do the clutch. If the money is there you might also think about getting a lighter flywheel because they're already in there anyway and the labor shouldn't go up by more than a few bucks if at all.

You don't need to pull the engine, but it's a bit tricky if you've never worked on the car before - like having to rotate the transmission 180 degrees in order to remove it. It took me 5 hours to change the clutch in my car with a little help. The hardest thing was accessing the top bolt.
Addition costs would be machining the flywheel. I highly recommend it. When I first removed mine, I actually found cracks in the flywheel, so I had to get a replacement.

so 250 sounds like a good price then?
I've thought about the lightened flyweel, but decided against it. I don't feel like having to ride the clutch harder to take off.

264 is the price i was quoted. 302 is what i paid. still 200 less than what nissan wanted. i say go for it

You don't have to ride the clutch AT ALL with a lighter flywheel. I definitely recommend one. My boyfriend has one on his '96 KA, and it's awesome. The motor revs so much easier, feels healthier... I love it! And so does he! It's the most power he's gotten out of any performance mod he's done.

Hmm, maybe i'll think about it then...

You have no idea how beautiful it feels to rev the motor up... it's just so nice and fast and idles so much smoother...
Now that I'm driving my bone-stock 240, I keep on being worried and bedazzled by the f'n rev-meter taking so long to get up and down. Haha! Yeah... I know I'm stupid...

really? he likes the flywheel that much? i like it but i think it's one of those upgrades i could have done without, for now at least. with the flywheel you have to do a little bit quicker shifting, and it's impossible with a transmission that's so bad you have to shift slow. hmm maybe there's my problem. replace the transmission with the spare and get more use out of the flywheel. but i still think an ECU would have been more fun

Mmm, for the price I think it would be more worth it to get an ECU. Actually, I really want to get a full aftermarket ECU, one that I can connect a laptop to so I can tune it myself, or at least do diagnostics myself.
I've seen a few systems around, but they never say if they work with specific cars or how much modification is needed etc.

James, I definitely agree with you: don't get a flywheel on a broken tranny. However, my boyfriend has a '96 S14, the tranny is immaculate.
Transient, I think I would also go for the Flywheel only because I drive a car that has one installed on it, and have some experience as far as testing it out goes. I've never driven a 240 with an ECU upgrade, so flywheel is something I'm familiar with and would go with first. Just a personal opinion.

What flywheel is it, and how much did it cost? How difficult to install?

Hey, it didn't go to the top.
Stupid Ikoncode.
only get your clutch done at a decent shop,
when i had my crx's clutch done i had it doen by a friend, sort of, he did it cheap and quick, but it sucked. the clutch was brand ew and slipped from day one, had it adjusted and it still sucked...
when i needd my timing chain done on the 240 icalled and visited several shops, they all had to ge out this book and took 15 minutes for an approximate charge. Some places wouldnt do it at all.
When i called nissan, before i even finished my first sentence teh guy says...
"i have the part numbers, give me one second... $844 (canadian) including tax, i can do it saturday, good for you???"
"Fuck yeah!!!"
all the other places wanted $700 in labour alone, and nissan was killer...
i will go back there, he was great, i've bought several thigns and for some reason they're the best and even the cheapest..
it's in Welland Ontario which is a hole of a town and i assume they get 0 business, so he wows them when he can...
i highly recommmend

ok guys here comes my truck flywheel option for those needing a clutch job and looking for a low cost lightened flywheel.
this is my setup on my car . I have a 93 hardbody KA24e truck flywheel that I had lightened it now weighs in at like 17 pounds. It has a 240mm clutch surface our stock flywheel has a 225mm . I put a heavy duty daiken truck clutch in for now .
When I install my Turbo I will put in a LUK goldline clutch that has 1,400 pounds of clamping force and 500 lbs of torque holding. mmmmm stronger than an ACT stage 2 and only costs $170.
Flywheel costed $40 at the yard and $150 to be surfaced lightened and balanced and my engine revs so smoothly now and hauls ass it pulls in 5th on the freeway. I can't wait for the turbo:biggrin:

Is the hardbody flywheel lighter than the 240sx one, or did you just need to replace your stock one?
How do they lighten it anyway?

Ok , first off I did a Auto to 5 speed swap. Second off the hardbody flywheel is heavier by about 4lbs than our stock flywheel but it has the 240mm clutch surface which means more clamping area which is good for Turbo applications which is why I went for it.
to take care of the wieght issue and to come up with a low cost way to go light weight flywheel.
They take metal off the backside and its a rather straight forward process.
oh yeah in response to the original question $270 is a good price for a clutch job. Here in California most the top notch shops charge $475 for the whole thing parts and labor.
