I have a silviaparts.com replica S14 K's spoiler that I want to mount on my '97 aspen white S14 kouki, but after looking for a coupla shops to do it, i have gotten quotes ranging from $800-1900!!!!

That seems ridiculous for the work i need done:

1. remove stock spoiler (i can do that myself)
2. fill in stock spoiler holes
3. minor touch up on trunk lid (little scratches)
4. drill new holes for K's spoiler
5. sand/paint/prep/paint K's spoiler
6. stick K's spoiler on trunk
7. possibly shave emblems from rear

Nothing they don't do every single day, the only thing is they likely haven't done a Nissan S14 K's wing before, but
c'mon...painting and mounting a spoiler is pretty damn easy. 1900 is half way to a damn good paint job for the WHOLE car, 800 is nearly a auto/manual brake swap, something ALOT harder to do! And its total BS to say its harder to do the 240sx aspen white because its "pearl!!!"

So my question is how much it cost you guys with S14's to slap the K's (or retty much any spoiiler) on your car? Does it sound like those shops are totally high balling me, or am i way off here?

Anyone in the Bay Area or Sacremento area help me out ?

$800 wtf, let me do it I can do it for less. But that how body shops makes the money, especially you are taking about bay area, stuffs are not cheap there. Why don't you consider fix that stock spoiler holes yourself, first go mount the K spoiler and take it off (just to get the hole) then just go to parts store buy some fiberglass resins, it is easy to use, the hardest part is sanding, it take time. after fix the hole, take your k spoiler and your trunk to the shop and paint, mostly charge about $200 or less, than after is painted, install it yourself. Other opition you have is find a used trunk that have no hole, it is hard to find. If you don't care about gettoness, you can go to Oakland East 12 and internation ave, that is alot of shop that charge less and do decent job since they are located on getto location, also they are most own by chinese or vietnese. Asian Connection. Give it a try DIY, I am currently doing patching the stock holes for my spoiler since I bought a Spec K spoiler from the group buy month ago.

removing of the spoiler u can do. u can drill the holes urself..place it where u want it and drill. sand and prep the spoiler for paint u can do urself as well. shave emblems? which ones? the 240sx one? juss floss that one out.

u can do most of the work by urself to cut down cost.

The problem is I have never done work on the body of a car before, I've painted little things like taillight pieces, lexan RC Car bodies, odds and ends, but never a car body. it's also a freakin S14 kouki man! I don't wanna jack it up!

On the other hand, if someone were inclined to stop by and help me out, it'd be awesome...haha

It's a very old thread, I know, but OptionZero, the reason painting is so expensive on white Nissans (they use Pearl in the Maxima too) is the three-layer base coat that is used. It's something like white, some kind of nearly-transparent paint, and a 'pearl' layer which if you look closely at your paint under strong lighting, will have a sparkly kind of shine to it.

Also, with paint jobs, unless you have good hook-ups, you get what you pay for...

Pearl paints are a 3-stage paint. It is very difficult to do. Bodyshops charge a lot for work like that because it is very delicate work - filling holes is a pain in the ass. The quotes are high--should be about $500 in my opinion, but paint materials is where most of the cost is. The bodyshop I work at is the best bodyshop in town, but our prices are competitive with everyone else's (because of insurance company regulations) and we charge $250-$300 per body panel to paint - and that's not including any repair time - only prep and paint time with materials.

usually body shops charge more to paint part of a car then the whole car. Strange isn't it?

The "replica" spoiler will probably need alot of prep work, and they'll have to weld & grind the old mount holes closed with plates. Then do mud work to smooth out the old mount holes. Line up the spoiler on the lid, drill and mount. Then remove spoiler, mask vehicle and paint lid and spoiler. And i've seen "minor scratches" that required 4-5 hours worth of body labor to featheredge out and repair. Price is high, but it's not just a throw it on and blow color on it operation.
