I was wondering if any of you guys....and girls (didn't want to offend any females)...tell your insurance company to insure your aftermarket parts?

that's a tough choice...i can't say from personal experience...but my brother has his car fixed up and only told the insurance company about his paint job...when he got in a accident, the insurance company covered his paint but didn't do anything for his intercooler...i'm not sure how insurance companies are, but i'm assuming unless they know about it they won't cover it...so it all depends, if you are accident prone...pay the higher insurance and be safe...if not, then take the risk...but you never know...

call em, tell em u have a policy with em, dont offer up ur name, say u have a quick question and ask it. i'd guess they really r required to answer you. theyll prob tell u to keep ALL ur receipts.....no receipts, no coverage. most only offer a %'age of value, ie 60-80%. better than nothing!

However, they WILL increase your premium, seeing that you are now a target and your car is more prone to theft.

I know that here (in canada) most insurace companies work as following... you are allowed to put up to 1000 in additions or mods on your car before they have to be claimed... and you must warn them and have reciepts (this even include aftermarket stereos) After that, it is 100 dollars a year extra for every 1000 dollars in mods you have. I don't know if it is different elsewhere. And with a lot of stuff they will not count it, like if you change your seats or something, if it replaces a factory piece sometimes they don't charge you extra.

yea so basically keep your reciepts and let them know what you have.  i dont remember but state farm (im not 100% sure here) doesnt charge you extra at all for aftermaket parts.  i gotta check

Hey... I had a huge argument with my insurance company when my Corvette caught fire...
I had about 4k into engine work, not to mention a newer engine in it... about 515 horsepower...
Then I had a 1996 body on my '85 frame, with '91 ZR-1 rims and fat 315/35/17 rubbers.  New seats, CD sound system...  All up in flames.
When they totaled it out, I got the value of an '85 Corvette, plus 1k in aftermarket parts, evaen though my car was appraised at $15k, I go 7K.
Now when I go to do my swap in about a year, I am tellin the insurance company.

my insurance Progressive told me (when i got my rims and shit stolen) that for like 50 buck every 6 months i can get all aftermarket accessories that are permanantly attached to the car insured, ie rims, body kit, exaust, engine work, tint, all kinds of stuff, so thats what i have now, ill have to read up on the true details of it but i know it was $50 for 6 months

my friend got all his impreza mods insured. all he did was save the receipts and i guess insuarance company took pics of his parts. if something ever ends up happening, he pays a certain deductible of the $5k+ he invested into his car. this is for his insurance company, dunno how other companies do their aftermarket policies.
