Hey everyone, I begin my automotive program at my local college on the 15th of this month and it turns out I need $3000-$4000 worth of tools before the 3rd day of class. I have literally 50 dollars and my parents aren't really the most supportive parents out there so the only way for me to get that kind of money is to sell my current dream car :(. Yesterday I stumbled upon a scholarship opportunity, it's a chance to win $2,500 along with a trip to a NHRA race. I would rather just have the money because my auto programs has no breaks throughout the whole year, mon- thu 5pm-10pm. Anyways the contest consisted of writing a small essay along with a photo of my car. It's been approved and now everyone is able to vote for it :D . I would greatly appreciate it if you guys could help me out and vote for me!

No where fancy, just my local community college. I heard the program there is really good and the education is basically the same as a trade school such as UTI except it cost a lot less and I don't have to leave my friends and family :D. It's part of a Toyota program so I will be Toyota certified, have a couple ASE certifications and an associates in applied automotive technology.
Once again thank you everyone!

You can't use this scholarship money to buy tools (as per the rules and regulations). It can only be used to pay for tuition. I hope this doesn't interfere with your plans at all. You should post a copy of the essay you wrote on here! Good Luck!

Alright thanks for the heads up, I wasn't aware of that. It should still be all good, I get 4,400 through federal aid but problem is that the financial aid money doesn't get dispersed until 3 weeks after class begins. I will use most of the financial aid for tools and the rest on tuition and if I get the 2,500 that can go all towards the tuition :D. Lol ha and I had 20 minutes before the contest closed so I kinda bum rushed it, wish I knew about it earlier :( but here it is:
For as long as I could remember, cars have always been my passion. Growing up, no one in my family was into cars because we could not afford it; my parents were poor and struggled. Whenever I was allowed to buy a Hotwheels car, I always hoped that one day I would be able to own the same exact one. When “Gran Turismo” for the Sony Playstation came out, that's when I knew that cars would something that I would always enjoy. I have always considered myself a very hand on learner and being an auto-mechanic is exactly that. The automotive field is always changing, each year cars get more advanced than before and that's what keeps being an auto mechanic exciting. I want to learn what each little part of a car does and that is why I have decided to pursue a career in the automotive field. I am currently registered to begin my automotive program at my local college on December 15th, 2010. I plan to obtain my Associates in Applied Automotive Technology within 2 years and land a job working at my local Toyota dealership and train to become a master mechanic. I would need $4,000 worth of tools and the only possible way to come up with that money is to sell my current car, which happens to be my dream car. The program itself is a 5-hour class, Monday – Thursday with little to no breaks, it will be very challenging but I am determined to be top in my class. After I complete my formal education, my dream goal would be to open my own specialty shops specializing in performance more than general repairs and oil changes.
Pics coming up in the next post :P

Why do you need a 3000 tool set? No lie my coworker has the $60 husky set from home depot and he's a mechanic in an auto shop...if you have a job buy a snap on set and pay it off slowly or matco

one thing to consider when it comes to buying tools while your in school that i wish i had done instead of spending all my money(literally) on snap on tools is going the way of craftsman while your in school and purchasing snap on or mac or w/e when you have a solid job. i probably spent close to 6 grand on all my tools for auto body and i still don't have all of them. and now im broke and work for min wage at a body shop(just started) and deliver pizza at night after im done at the shop. and on top of that, i cant afford the last year of school so i cant get my degree for another year. do i regret my desicion? no, but i wish i had thought it through a little more before jumping in line and spending twice as much as i need on tools at the time. and now i don't have tools at home. believe me, carting your tools back and forth in a bag gets real old, real fast. just some food for thought.
anyway, i voted for you. good luck homie.

Did he go to a proper school or did he just land a job at a shop? Some schools let you use their tools while others give you a tool list and you must have them all before the 2nd week of class. I happen to be in the category which requires you to have tools before the 3rd day of class. My school has a tool fair for the auto program and a bunch of high end vendors (snap-on, matco, ect) come and give you a really good discount on their tools. If i were to buy it from home depot or an autozone, I would assume it would be close to 10k out of my own pocket but since it's school related financial aid can help which is great :D!

Thanks for the input, did you school not offer some sort of discount? Sorry to hear that though, I hope everything works out in the end. I heard being a mechanic in the beginning is rough but once you get past that, it's pretty good job to have.

He went to school years ago he's an old fart I'm just saying that's crazy they want you to purchase 3k in tools before financial aid comes in and if you do snap do blue point it's snap on quality made outta the USA... I think it's ridiculous they dont provide you with tools till you can build a set

Hmm I'm not sure, I did a little bit more in depth research and this is what I found out.
The essays get graded on a points system, the highest 8 essays will receive the $2,500 scholarship:
* Originality of Submission - 500 Points
* Creativity - 300 Points
* Fit to Contest Theme - 200 Points
After they have chosen the top 8 essays, the one with the highest amount of votes get a certain amount of points:
Highest vote total -200
Second highest vote total -175
Third highest vote total - 150
Fourth highest vote total -125
and so forth till 8th highest.
Once everything is said and done, the one with the highest points wins the grand prize to go to the NHRA race.
SOOOOOOOO, what I am having to worry about now is my essay because I feel like I didn't do such a great job. I had to rush it since I had little time to write the essay and submit it before the contest ended. Ugh I wish I did a better job on it -.- but it is what it is and I would still like to thank everyone for voting!

i had a pretty big discount but snap on is still expensive even with the discount. and after you get the basic tools you need paying for the air/power tools adds up realllly fast. and please dont get me wrong, i am in no way upset with my current situation lol it just took me alot longer then i was hoping to find a shop to hire me, and when i found one i had to work for 2 months free before they would put me on payroll. all in all, im very happy right now :)
