I have a s14 I recently got with 5spd KA. First problem; nothing to erking is in order to get to first without a grind, I have to row into second then up to first.
When I first drove the car a bit, third gear wasn't such a big problem and it seemed to get worse n worse as far as grinding into third.
To make a long story short, there was a time I cud barely get into third wo grinding alot. So one day I was driving; before going into third from second, I would go into neutral, back in to second, and then third no problem. I did this about 4 times and then tried to go directly into third, and now it falls right in for the rest of the drive and another drive later on that day with no grinding even if I tried.
I was told the synchros are goin in and out of line. Any other ideas??

common prob with these trannys...its your synchros. a rebuild kit with bearings and synchros is 190.00. if you know what your doing and take your time its not hard to rebuild.

synchros... or you ran with low/no tranny gear oil for a while
rebuild time, read FSM to get an idea of what is involved
and decide if you can tackle it on your own
or
could find a replacement tranny

Any ideas on how long before it may come back, and what would cause it to come back? About how much is the labor cost on a rebuild?

it really depends on how u drive it...the easier you drive it the longer it will go before u need the rebuild/new tranny. imo id fix it within a month or so. this happened to my sr and it only gets worse as time goes on.

try changing your fluid first... It might have a gl-5 in there. get amsoil gl-4 or redline mt90. give it a go. Still doing it? rebuild time. Grinding into third could also mean a worn clutch. WHOLE bunch of different stuff.

no i just drove the car from a park overnight, shifted vigourously and it was fine. maybe I was just catching a shaving or something. I know there is still a problem in there somewhere.
srstand, how much longer did u drive it that way? U had the EXACT same scenario?
My dad mentioned if i changed the fluid it could make it worse by putting the shavings back into the trans gears. like if it isnt broke dont ouch it. i may just order some amsoil and keep it on stand by until it comes back and I cant get it to go away. I have no idea what doubling 2nd gear the way i did could have fixed it at least temporarily.

i dont think anyone can tell u the EXACT amount of time u have left before your gears are done. it could blow up tomorrow, it could last forever. buy another one, or rebuild.
