Ok so we just finished swapping a new sr20det long block in my s13. Went to start it, it turned over but it's consistantly making a low pitch backfire popping sound from the exhaust and making a consistant ticking sound (sounds like valves clicking). I think the timing could be a bit off and maybe it needs to be re-tuned. Does anybody have an idea on what could be causing these problems?
Heres a mod list:
Redtop sr20det
T28 ball bearing turbo
Circuit Sports turbo lines
Tomei 550cc injectors
Z32 MAF
Apexi Super Suction Intake
Tomei Exhaust Manifold
Tomei Elbox
Blitz Downpipe
Megan Test Pipe
Circuit Sports 3" Exhaust
Greddy Spec M Front Mount intercooler
HKS SSQV BOV
HKS wastegate actuator
Circuit Sports catch can
Circuit Sports overflow coolant tank
Nismo Fuel pressure regulator
Walbro 255 fuel pump
ROM tuned ECU at 14psi
Would the ecu need to be re-tuned after swaping the long block??
Thanks for the help

hmm, well are is the clicking noise actually the injectors firing off, cause i know certain injectors make clicking noises....
but you should goto the 626 meet and ask Dwayne, i think he posts on here as Omn1cr0n, he drives a s14 and has a pony tail, he's the expert with everything, that guy will tell you what your problem is on your car without even seeing it. its like he has magical car problem answering powers. if i had his phone number i would totally give it to you

We also pulled the spark plugs to make sure they were gapped correctly. They were gapped right but they were already very dirty (black). which is weird because they were brand new

Injectors will make a ticking sound. My sard injectors are about this only thing you can hear when the motor is idling.
More than likely though, your motor hasnt built up enough oil pressure yet. You said it was a new long block right? I would make sure you prime it first before you start it.
As far as the back fire problem, your timing is probably off. Just restab your CAS. You could trying advancing or retarding your cas before you pull it to see if the backfire noise goes a away. Take the bolts out and spin it more than the allowable adjustment.
Do you know how to correctly set the timing on a sr20det?
If the base timing isnt correct, it could be causing the dirty sparkplugs your talking about.
With a rom tune, as long as you are using the same setup then you should be ok. That's assuming the longblock had the same compression ratio as your last motor.

yeah just swapped the long block. I thought it could be the injectors but they never made that sound before. And we did try adjusting the CAS a little bit while it was idling, it didnt really make a difference. To adjust the timing I set the crank pulley to the second timing mark to the left and adjusted the CAS to the top timing mark.
I do think that it could have been previously tuned with lower compression numbers
