I'm looking for a light weight comfortable helmet under $400. Any suggestions? And are there any track events or drift events in the near future? All the drift days seem to be over in Cali and that Falken showoff in Del Mar doesn't seem to have a drift clinic like in Hawaii. I really don't feel like practicing on mountain roads because of all the risks involved.

Aaron, it seems as though all the events in california are done and the season is over. I think what I wrote came out wrong. I live in Los Angeles. The next events are
October 11, 2003 Falken Drift Showoff in San Diego - Del Mar Fairgrounds, Del Mar , CA
October 25-26 Infineon Raceway (Sears Point) - Napa, CA
November 2003 Drift Day 8 - Arizona Firebird International Raceway, Arizona
December 2003 Drift Association Season Finale 2003.
This seems rather slim in terms of me getting some seat time. I don't feel like driving to Arizona and I heard the del mar event is just for pros or something like that. I guess I'm **** out of luck then, unless there are smaller events going on. Those are the ones I want to know about.

F'in fast reply. I think I'm liking the Bell SR Pro helmet because it's only $250 and I don't need to have a plastic eye cover because I'm not driving in an open cockpit. Is a visor better in any ways? Maybe a tinted one to block sunlight? What do you guys think? Does anyone have this helmet? Is it lightweight? And where did you try on your helmet (specifically Los Angeles, OC) before you bought it or did you just measure your dome and put an order in.

I'll sell you mine. It's gettin to be too small. I've got a 7 1/4 hat size. Pretty big head.
i have gforce pro - fullface sa2000. i paid $250 for it... plus $40 for the tinted visor.
visor helps alot especially if the tracks are dusty and u dont wanna get blinded by rubbers and dust clouds. it takes awhile to get used to driving with the visor on. but it helps, especially last drift event in california speedway.

I own an SR Pro. HUGE eyeport is great (I wear glasses). Very comfortable, for me, but a bit heavy (no heavier than other sub-$400 buckets; light = $$$$). I run open track events, and have never wanted a visor. Most people have to flip them up to keep them from fogging (given the low airflow in a closed cockpit car). As for tint, buy a pair of good sunglasses -- they'll help a lot more than a shaded visor.
My personal advice would be to find a place that stocks them and try one on. Wear it around the store for 10-15 minutes. If it hurts, don't buy it. I passed up a pimpy Simpson and bought the cheaper Bell b/c it fit better. Comfort is the #1 factor (b/n SA rated helments).

I would definately recommend trying on the helmet before you buy.. I measured my head for a Simpson helmet, and when I tried it on, it was WAY too tight.. helmet needs to fit perfect. Just tight enough so when you crank it back and forth on your head, the pads still touch your cheeks. If your going to use a head sock, then make sure you try the helmet on with it on. it'll make a difference.
money shouldn't be a factor in buying safety equipment. Fit, safety and comfort should. If you buy an el cheapo helmet that doesn't fit properly, it won't protect you like it should in a crash. Remember, it YOUR head in there. Not saying a cheap helmet can't fit... Bell's are very popular b/c most people rave about their comfort, and fit, and they tend to be a good bit cheaper.
I personally prefer a full face helmet too. the idea of a fire, or my face getting smashed isn't something I like.

I also reccomend the trying the helmet thing on. The measurements dont work for me cause I got a weird head. When i went to Sube Sports I tried on a few, and I liked the way the Bell fit the best. I went with the Bell Sport 3. A great helmet for the money and SA2000, so should last a while.
