View Full Version : apexi cone filter or K&N filter with box?

if i took out the resonator box already, do you think the Apexi cone filter would be better than a K&N filter with the stock air box?

the cone filter has a bigger surface area, so it should be able to suck in more air right? plus wouldn't it sound better too?

i need to make some kind of scoop to scoop some cold air into the engine bay from the bumper if I am going to go cone filter.
with the box, it's easier, i could just hook up a pipe/hose to the bumper and there are two holes on the bottom of the air box to hook up to.

The Apex filter is definately worth it. Besides having more surface area and drawing in more air, it also has the advantage of being a dry filter, so you won't have to worry about oil being sucked into the intake like you would with the K&N.

sh!t, i didn't even know it was a dry filter (got it used just yesterday), but yea, thanks for letting me know, cuz i was about to go buy a k&n kit to clean it.

so how would i clean a dry filter?

K+N is $10 to buy and $10 to clean.

cept the oil that allows the filter element to work properly, contaminates your air flow sensor. My Sr maf is crapping out cuz the previous owner decided to be cool and use a M's/ K&N filter on it and its a bit covered in K&N oil. a better alternative is the Blitz LM its like 65-75$ and its dry and u can find replacements relatively cheaply (30-40$) or just be ghetto and wash it out w/ a hose like u would the apex-i filter.

You shouldnt have any problems like sucking in oil with your K&N as long as it is oiled properly and not excessively.

I have been using a K&N filter for years and have never had the slightest problem with it. I clean my MAFS fairly often with alcohol or contact cleaner, and its always pretty damn clean too.

problem is the clip/ previous owner never changed the oil and used alot of oil. Thus somewhat contaminating my air flow sensor.

Mike advice is sound btw, i used a K&N personally on my KA for years and i never had any problems. The trick is dont buck wild with ur oil and clean regularly (every 10K).

If the filter is excessively oiled, just wash it out again.. the spray/cleanser removes all the oil from the filter, so its easy to just un-do the mistake the other person made.

Oh, as for the cone vs drop-in, the drop-in's are a joke.. they do nothing. If you want ANY sort of performance, just go with a cone filter and a CAI extention if you can. I noticed a fair difference between each setup:

stock - boring
stock with removed resonator - better
stock with K&N drop in - no difference
cone filter - good
cone filter with intake - very good
cone filter with full cold air intake - as good as it gets for NA.

so just use water to clean it? can someone confirm this?

i searched on google and looked on apexi.com for documentations on this filter, and they didn't have it. plus i got this used so i don't have any instructions as to how to clean it.

hey how can i run the apex cone filter if im runnin a KA 91??

mine came with the adapter, and i think it works for both engines, because it's the MAF of both engines have the same pattern, not completely sure tho.

but yea, if someone can confirm my question about using water to clean the filter, it would be great.

KA and SR filter adaptors should be the same.

You can't use water. It's recommended that you clean it with just compressed air.

They have the MAF adaptors.

Straight from Apexi-usa.com

The Power Intake is a maintenance-free dry-type air filter and will alleviate the problem of filter oil from "wet" air cleaners interfering with the air-flow meter.

but can that be used on a APEX??
as far as i know the apex has no neck and from teh pic i saw on Apex site it looks like the MAF screws in to the filter...

I have an Apex on my SR, it comes with an adapter/neck. MAF->adapter->filter

those are for filters with a neck, the apex doesn't have a rubber neck, the adaptor screws onto the filter.

if anyone wants an apexi air filter with adaptor for their SR, it's $55 shipped, please leave your email here.

1) Never clean a K&N filter with compressed air
2) Clean a K&N filter with its special cleaner (it degreases it)
3) Always re-oil your filter

Also, the SR and SOHC KA use the same MAFS housing. I dont know about DOHC, but I know the SOHC one works.

Neither does your complaining. Man... just make it work if it doesn't right from Apex. Use your imagination, figure out how the damn thing works, and modify it so it fits your purposes.
