So I sold my coupe and I'm shipping off to bootcamp next month, 3 days after I turn 23. I've been trying to join since April 2009.
Anyone else here a Coastie? Any suggestions on what/where I should request for my first assignment from firsthand experience?
Thanks guys, wish me luck!

A little off topic but is the Coast Guard really so soft that you get to pick your first station? I'm ex navy and if we graduated top of our class in A school we got to pick from what they offered us. I know the Air Force gets to make a dream list, but I don't know anyone who got anything close to what they listed out.

I was under the impression you fill out a dream list of locations/assignments while at boot camp. I do not know whether or not you receive what you request.

I first went to the recruiter in April of 09. Finally got a spot next month. Best of luck to you, but it is slim pickings right now, the average wait is about a year I heard.

joy a year :/, and thanks i could use the luck! If things work out all be going to UCLA's Paramedic program, but if not (cost and other things) then Coast Guard will be the best training/prep for EMT/Paramedic professions. whats your job in the Guard im going to try for AST (aviation survival tech)

my long time friend has been a coastie since 2004 or so. dude seems to like it. i think he is staying in for the 25 years.
he grew up with me in Wi, and he got sent to St. Saint Marie Mi. and was there for a few years, then moved down to the mainland michigan, he just moved this summer. to the pugent sound area in Washington. i know he has put in for many requests to be either closer to home or in a differant location but he takes where he gets placed.
best of luck.

yea thats another worry is where all be located, grew up in Cali and ALL my fam is here so it would be hard to leave, but at least with the guard all be in the states. But if all works out all be stayin here and goin to UCLA...fingers crossed. but if that doesnt happen im not worried about Coast Guard/where all be stationed it will be a fun experience either way :) and get to where i need which is keyy
