View Full Version : Questions about drifting

Hey im new to drifting never really been interested till hyperfest. I had my setup planned for my new car and i wanna make sure im thinking rationally so here are my plans for you guys to tell me whats wrong.

Stage 3 Clutch- I was guessing that with a stage three clutch there would be no springs so when the clutch is dropped the power transfer is more jolting asier to get the rear tires to spin

Lightened Flywheel- i wasnt sure if this would hurt the drifting because less inertia so when the clutch is dropped would the engine slow down alot quicker? does anyone have any experience with this?

300zx VLSD- pretty basic both tires spin so the drift is alittle easier to initiate and while going on the little bit the spinning tires move the car is greater because both are spinning

300zx Rims- widder tires a little bit harder to get lose but easier to grab again making drifting a little bit safer

These arent all the planned mods but the only ones that will affect sliding other than suspension. Im really just bored and wanted to make sure im thinking correctly thanks alot guys

whats your power output?

get a bucket/racing seat
that's all you really need imho. hold you in place and keep you from sliding around..because your body moves a lot when drifting.

Right now 0 hp at 0 rpms haha um im planning on close to 300 i have an sr that will be boosting at 12 for now soon to be turned up with a t28. I honestly dont understand tires there are too many variables to look at including what its made out of tread wear the way the treads are how fast it wears, stuf like that so i figure ill get someone who knows alot about tires to help me choose some good ones but right now im runnin 156 hp on my s14 with some sams tires and an open diff its still fun thanks alot for the help. Also does the s13 seat hold u in good? i think it will be ok but i guess if i get into some serious sidewaysness(hmm) ill need something to hold me in. also i was considering maybe a roll bar nothing that goes up front near me, would that be pointless i dont know alot about roll cags either :(

cheap tires taht are good are like FM901, ES100 and such

just try stuff. if you drift a lot expect to go thru a set of tires on a monthly basis
faster you go, you'll probably want stickier (better quality) tires

treadwear and all..mm play around with tires, that's the best

practice and seat time is really the most important thing.

Things have changed since then bro. That was over a year ago. Hahahahaha. Ohh well, sh*t happens. :bash:

I think the s13 seats hold well. I mean, they could be better obviously. But for a factory seat, no complaints. What's your suspension setup like? Or braking system?

ha well im not really new ive been on this forum since before i could drive (1+yrs) i dont post a whole lot because i dont have experience to help others out. I mean it isnt like i went out and bought a 240 to drift i bought the car before i consider the 2440 wagon. I just decided it looks fun sliding and youc an win money :) and get girls hehe. nah but it does look fun and also if u look back i hit a curb my first week driving before i even knew what drifting was. I was just driving normal and shifted around a corner(dumba$$) and hit a curb but its all good now we all make mistakes i have yet to have a drifting accident(ive only drifted once...today a few hours ago in a secluded non populated no guard rail place) Ill be going to that turn to practice because it puts no one in danger but me and i think i would have to be pretty bad to slide far enuff into the grass than the ditch..well see me and a couple guys are goin back later. Thanks for the help. also i am still deciding on suspension i am thinking of going witht he traditional eiback and kyb agxs but i dont have experience driving modded 240s so i am going to wait till someone lets me drive theres(hint hint to anyone in va) i am defiantly doing the 300zx brakes i alredy have a front stb and front sway bar and i am buying rear soon(no rush the car doesnt run).

I took the lumbar out of my S13 seats, and bended in the metal sides so they hold me tighter, and I sit farther down in them. Great result, feel just about as tight as my DAD's seats in my Civic Hatch.

Dave, i'm mounting my FM901's today, we'll see how they feel. i think tommarow we should put on my t/c rods as well and go take her for a lil ride off hillcrest.

besides the point, i reccomend you saving the tires on ur s14 and taking the ones off of one of ur 2 s13's or use a spare set of mine and doing what dousan said w/ the fm901's or yokahama avs's, b/c they are fairly cheap. also i'll send a link for my latest idea on suspension setup. It's fairly cheap courtesy of our local victory nissan dealer, and the one key word is "NISMO"

Now that i think about it i neede to ask some questions if anyone knows bout a nismo coilover kit. the local nissan dealer parts person said they would look into finding some info for me bout these "nismo coilover/shock kit" i asked if they had adj dampening, how they valved, spring rates, and if they came with pillow ball uppers, or normal uppers or nothing? but the total price was $738 and no shipping. Victory nissan no longer charges shipping on nismo products since the 350z has been out.
i'm gonna go check out the nismo LSd as well

215/45R17, a common size.

First number, the measurement in millimeters from the bulge in the side wall from side to side (section width). Second number is the aspect ratio, sidewall height to the width, 45% (section height/section width). R stands for radial. 3rd number is your rim size. Simple and easy.

i'm not really a good drifter or anything, but the lsd will help you a whole lot. open diff is too unpredictable, resulting in a lot of spin outs. just look at my runs during hyperfest, hehe. that's my next investment ;)

Dave, I'd worry less about buying products (suspension, power adders, and LSD's) and more on seat time, all the products in the world wont help unless you know how to keep control of your car. also I wouldn't just practice on Hill Crest, try other places so you dont get hungup on jus drifting around right turns. Definitely mess with the supports in your seats to hold you tighter, sliding around is fun but not when youre doing it in your seat around corners. I learned the hard way that a laid back seat, and barely being able to push in the clutch all the way, will hurt you more then you think when you're slidin. Avoid big rims too, tires will cost more, I'm stickin with my stock 15's to avoid higher tire costs. Yea...I think I've done enough rambling

yea jake but hillcrest is where i feeel confident i wont hurt myself or others so if i find more turns like that ill try them let me know if u have any good ones, sorry bout tonite didnt mean to get your hopes up i just didnt wanna try it by myself i didnt know u were gonna bring an audience

Good point. I agree with you then, wherever you feel comftorable and is safe for others. Yea I didnt plan on sam, heath, or austin to be there. Next time it will just be us. Either way it was fun.

haha its cool just kinda embarassing when all i did was spin tires,, i was hopin dave would take the coupe out there, he kept saying he was gonna show us a thing or 2 :bs: well next time we will see whats up with his new tires.

Only kidding dave you got experience on all of us.

also jake does the svx guy like to get sideways? that would be a site, and dave needed to get free with the porsche ahaha too bad hes a pussy.

Well im sure we'd all rather see you start out slow and spin tires around a corner then fly into the corner doin 60mph and rip the ebrake. Nobody goes out and pulls off a nice drift there first couple times out, you will spin out and o well, part of the learning process. Id rather embarass myself trying to drift over and over again then not do it at all...Emphasize the trying haha. As far as dave, the most you'll get out of him is a couple donuts and burnouts, but no drifting. Austin I dont know, if he gets his 240sx then watching him go from AWD to RWD should be fun to watch. But believe me I'm always lookin for nice roads.

Isn't hillcrest lined with car eating ditches on both sides of the road? 1/2 the turn's aren't blind and the road is banked which makes it a fun drive to go quick on but I'd never push it there

Nope, and If I did I sure as hell wouldn't talk about it on the internet.
But I'd go anywhere with curbs and guardrails before I'd go somewhere with ditches and trees...

I would really recommend an empty parking lot for now. Use the lines as turns if you want to see how well you can do it. At your level, "drifting" on a real road is just asking for trouble...

I agree with the parking lot but I dont think the police are checking forums lookin for spots ya kno

I was just informed of the exact 2 spots you guys were doing your thing, forget what I said about that road, I was thinking of a different one. :hs: :bigok:

Edit: just remembered that there are cameras at that 1 intersection. I dono if they are just sensors for the light to change or actual cameras though *shrugs*

yeah,i totally agree. when i first got my s13 i was too damn exited to go grifting. sad to say that what i was doing wasnt drifting, jsut uncontrolled sliding, which resulted into me crashin into a curb at 50mph!!!! that was almost a year ago and now i have a pretty good controlled technique down so i habe learned a lot. but definatly consiter open parking lots, practice your technique. and definatly seat time. that is what a lot of drivers lack. SEAT TIME. drifting takes time and experience so DRIFT-ON but until then for a gbeginner! STAY IN OPEN AREAS with room for errors!
